FYF Fest

This was also my first time at FYF. I came to Yelp and other websites to read reviews, ask the community and to be informed. We had already bought our tickets and were bringing my 14yr son from Las Vegas.

It wasn't that bad at all! These previous reviews were honestly painting a bad picture in my mind's eye!

NOTE: Keep in mind my wife and I are in our late 30s with disposable income and we have been to Coachella and Outside Lands previously. We just can't get enough of that live music!

First, we got a hotel room about 2 miles away, took a cab, walked in with no problems at 3:30pm. Security was polite and perhaps a little relaxed. It was hot but not intolerable. The only dust I saw was near the 2-3 men mosh pits at the Donatello and Michelangelo stages. Sound was good and didn't really notice any bleeds between the stages. (Keep in mind that we basically stayed at the Leonardo stage and moved our way in from Smith Westerns to Broken Social Scene. By the end of their awesome set, we were 3 rows back from the front and moved out to watch the last half of YACHT in the Raphael stage.)

The drinks and food were easy to acquire, waited 45 seconds for a free port-a-potty and the only long lines were for the water fountains. The shaded areas were filled up but you could still walk in under them if you had to. The evening breeze was beautiful and the music/sound/lighting was superb. The only drawback is that the merch stands were already out of most things that fit me (XL) but the prices were not bad.

We didn't really spend any cash on the food trucks but there was a lot of them all over. We left around 8pm to grab a bite 3 blocks away in Chinatown and took a cab home.

Highly memorable performances. I was only there for about 4 hours and was highly satisfied at the very reasonable price for this event.  Gooood music, great price. Plenty of food and drinks. Festival prices of course. Would go again.

Craving good sushi late at night? Taki Sushi delivered big. Situated in what looked like a college neighborhood, this really hit the spot. We had the Black pepper tuna (seared pepper tuna, tobiko avocado, Iso maki) and Spicy Tuna Yellowtail with tons of tobiko seaweed salad and avocado. Delicious. The hot house sake tasted a bit watered down but who cares, it was open until midnight! The service was over attentive but pleasant. I wish I had a place like this near my neighborhood!

We found this place while walking around the east village and came back the next day. If you love sake, you'll love this place. Great Sake selections. We had Hiroshima's own Biho sake a decent Junmai GInjo. Our server was a typical cute, clueless Japanese girl. Loved it!. This place offers what I would call Japanese Tapas. The place itself (basement) is amazing, tiny and magical (think lost in translation) We had Tofu ginger scallions with Bonito flakes. Salmon flakes on rice with seaweed. Baby octopus wasabi and Scallops garlic sauce. They were good but nothing was blowing me out the water. Perfect place to have a nice long talk or a romantic date.

Right off Union Square. Not your typical dog but very well done. I had the Turkey dog with chimichurri and grilled asparagus. Amazing. Friendly crew and very well designed and minimal space. Definitely a conversation friendly spot.

Quick and affordable, not to mention delicious. Try it for sure.

I came here during Restaurant Week and I didn't write down notes for this since we were having too much fun in the village. The food was amazing, we had the duck confit and seared skate both perfectly done but nothing out of this world. We DID get the Prix Fix so things are probably different on a regular day. It definitely did NOT dissapoint though. The server recommended an amazing wine: Menetou Salon sauvignon blanc.

Friendly, modern, date-friendly and reasonably priced. Would definitely come back

We came here around 4pm in picturesque Old Town. The ambiance was cozy and sociable. That was until we walked all the way back to a cavernous warm place. The decor was very typical for New Mexico but appropriate.

We ordered their pitcher of Sangria at a decent price but found it incredibly sweetened and watered down. Boo! We started with the Green Chile Chicken soup. It was very tasty but very very filling. Next up was our main courses: Handmade Tamale Plate and Carne Adovada al Horno both delicious and well seasoned but a tad on the heavy side for our tastes. The pork was moist but we felt the tamales were a tad on the dry side.

Overall I would definitely come back. Their patio was closed but that looked amazing. They also have live music Thu-Sat nights. Definitely a must if you're stopping by 'burque

As we arrived at this picturesque "local favorite" we were greeted with smiles and a 45 minute wait. No problem! this restaurant is so close to the main town plaza that there's plenty of window shopping within walking distance. We came back to check on our time when we happened to catch two bar seats opening up. We chose to have lunch here and we met a couple of locals and a couple from Colorado. Everyone was so friendly. Our bartender Serena  --a Cameron Diaz doppelganger, served us  Pomegranate margaritas For our main course, we chose to split an christmas-style Chicken Enchilada (christmas meaning red and green Chili sauces). It was more than enough for us, and, it  telegraphed a definitive New Mexico flavor. The ambience is cozy and fun while the decor was chimerical.

This place is a must if you're visiting Santa Fe, but get there early if you mind waiting. Don't feel rushed though. Slow down and take it in.

We arrived around 8pm on Feb 12th, 2010 to find the place severely understaffed (one server, one busboy) while servicing at least 7 other tables. Needless to say it did take a while for us to get our drinks. But our server was gracious, calm and attentive, which is quite impressive considering the volume of such a little place. We settled on an Argentinian Malbec, priced very reasonably, to go with our meal.

We ordered the Ceviche as an appetizer and it did not disappoint. Layers of sumptuous seafood, peppered with cilantro and red onions. A solid helping of cancha (a peruvian snack made from large corn kernels that are tossed in hot oil until puffed and golden brown) as well as a perfect amount of acidity in the citrus.

Our dinner consisted of a moderately portioned. Aji de Gallina* and Arroz con Pollo*. Two dishes I had as a child, growing up in Peru. Although both entrees were well balanced and tasty, they weren't quite as flavorful as they could've been. And I think my mom, bless her soul, would've done a better job of them. I know you can't compare the feeling of your mother's cooking with restaurant food but I think they could've pushed themselves a bit, specially on a friday night. We had a great time nonetheless and took a few pictures of the beautiful servings. We finished the meal with 4 alfajorcitos or small alfajores. A type of peruvian pastry consisting of two round cakes sandwiched with honey and condensed milk in the middle and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Very small and simple and delicious.

Overall, we will come back again just for the ceviche and maybe try some cuzqueña beer and their other dishes. Taking advantage of their patio this upcoming summer.

*Aji de Gallina (Peppered Chicken) is a Peruvian classic made with aji peppers, chicken, and a cream sauce.

*Arroz con Pollo (chicken with rice) is cooked in a mild cilantro sauce, with corn kernels, and small pieces of carrots, peas and red onions.

Nora's Wine Bar and Osteria - CLOSED

We visited this restaurant on Feb 12 2010. We've been here a few times before but only for the bar area. They have an extensive wine selection but nothing to write home about. A few rare gems can be found (5 Turley Wines). Unfortunately, they rely heavily on Italian varietals. Mostly Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, both of those are not to my liking, but I digress. The atmosphere was buzzing with a steady hum. A local place where the bar area is mixed with bankers, musicians, software engineers and CEOs. All entertaining new acquaintances merrily, along their wine and cheese selections.

On to the Dinner. The Service was attentive and prompt. The Waiter, Giancarlo was very helpful and suggested a great Russian River Zinfandel. We started with an Endive & Fig salad. It was delicious, with bits of blue cheese and sugared walnuts, but a bit on the dry side. The Main course was a lightly tossed capellini with slightly roasted tomato, fresh basil and EVOO. It was perfectly cooked and amply served. Nora's is about sharing. All the portions are served in platters and basins, so I would suggest one appetizer and one entree if you're sharing.

Overall I was very satisfied with the ambiance, service and food but there was something missing. Maybe our selection didn't showcase the chef's brilliance or maybe the intent is to nourish and imbibe casually, while the conversations and chats take center stage. Either way, it's was not a mind-blowing experience, and that's ok. I will definitely come back again and again.

Cirque du Soleil - Mystère

Having seen a few of Cirque's shows, I can attest that although this was one of the oldest productions, it wasn't the best.

As usual, the performances were spectacular. The feats of strength and flexibility produced by these men and women are a delight to see. The costuming and prop work were flawless, the music was enchanting, the light show was magical and the crew did an amazing rigging job. It's too bad that most of the scenes, or chapters within the show, get lost in the overall theme or story. Elements of the concept were confusing, missing and unnoticeable to me and that's too bad. Comical punctuations sprinkled throughout the show, although enjoyable, only served to further dilute the show's impressive sets.

Overall, quite a decent first glance at the world of Cirque. On the other hand, veteran viewers will find the holes in its production glaringly obvious.
