I had been looking forward to Short Order opening since I live nearby and I don't like much of the food options at the Grove/Farmer's Market. Since it's opening, I've dined in twice.
The "entrance" would be a little confusing if the hosts weren't immediately nearby. It's a bottlenecking spot between a staircase and the first-floor seating. The hostesses have been pleasant, helpful and patient, always offering seating on the "more casual" first floor or the "more relaxed" second floor. Although I've yet to try to the first floor, I prefer upstairs.
The service has been good and generally knowledgeable, explaining Short Order's food and service style. The first time I went to Short Order, there were paper menus in the napkin jar on the table; the second time, the menus served as placemats. I liked the latter method.
I love that the beef is from grass-fed cattle, and you can definitely recognize the difference in taste from a regular-cow beef burger. However, I think the burgers need a bit more flavour enhancement - perhaps from something as simple as salt (lack of seasoning). I don't agree with the notion that burgers must be medium rare in order to experience full flavor, and that a medium well or well done burger is "over cooked". I have been a grass-fed burger cook and I know that it is quite possible to have a juicy, flavourful, well-seasoned, medium-well or well-done, grass-fed burger.
I've tried the Short Order burgers as medium well, well done, and their standard medium rare - they don't do medium (odd). The well done and the medium well were a bit dry, and the medium rare was way too grisly and chewy.
The Short Order was pretty good if you're a mushroom fan; the Backyard was decent, but the experience was kinda ruined because of the dryness of the burger; the Oldschool, my favourite so far, was tasty and classic. As much as I like this place, the burgers are generally 'okay', and I can't help but think how much more I like Umami's burgers (or even The Patty Wagon's) Positive note: the burgers seem too big for me to eat.
The spuds (torn and fried baked potato pieces) are yummy, and you should try them at least once; the fries are delicious, salty, and kinda chewy in a good way.
As for drinks, I've love places that use glass jars for drinks, so thumbs up for that. And it's kinda cool and weird that they use the fancy glass carafes (from Sur La Table :D) to pour their water and New Orleans style coffee drink. Their custard-based shakes are awesome. Well, I've had only the chocolate shake, but it's delicious. It might be the best shake I've ever had. And I tried the lightly sweetened, chickory coffee drink and that was good too.
Interesting tidbit: apparently, Short Order has the only/first frozen custard machine on the West coast, so they're really trying to push that. Custard shakes, custard scoops on their pies, etc.
I also have had their chocolate chip cookie (because their fruit pie special was ginger-pear which is not appetizing to me) and being a baker and appreciator of shweets, I enjoyed it. The cookie was served warm and melty, and it was crispy and chewy and yumz. The odd thing was that the chocolate 'chips' were massive wafers of chocolate.
I'm a fan of Short Order because of its location; it's attempt to be both oldschool and L.A. classy; it's friendly staff; it's decent food, drink, and dessert; and I like sitting upstairs. There's even a walk-up, to-go window on the side. I'm not a fan of their prices, but what do I expect? It's next to the world-famous Farmer's Market! :D

I had the Falafel Grigorio(sp?) style. I loved it. Great flavors, sauces, textures.
