Brickside Café

Not overly impressed with the food on my first visit.  I stopped in for lunch with a friend and had the Cuban sandwich & potato salad.  I don't think I was ever served a sandwich in a bowl before.  The Cuban has ham, pulled pork, cheese, pickles, coleslaw and a tangy sauce.  My friend had the Brick sandwich with pot roast, mashed potatoes, gravy and cheese sauce, so yes, it is sloppy!  The potato salad was standard grocery store variety, not homemade.  The staff were nice and friendly.  The flame fired oven was unique though.  I'll come back to try the pizza sometime. The WiFi is a pain, you have to get a code at the counter, then register before getting online.  I would agree with the reviewer that said they seem to be trying to do too many things, but don't seem to excel at any one thing.

Huge variety, they have four separate buffet lines plus the sushi line (which I wouldn't recommend).  The food quality is just ok, but hey, it's a buffet (I'm a poet and just don't know it).  The friendly service makes Metro Buffet worth it.  This was my first visit and probably won't be a regular here as buffets are my thing anymore, but good every now and then.

The Flying Wienie

Update - 1/15/2012 6 photos
After my last couple visits I feel the Wienie is slipping a bit. Not only are the walls, ceiling and its adornments in desperate need of a good cleaning, the prices took another bump. That's hard to take in these hard times.  A gyro combo is now $8.25 and my old standby, the Chicago dog with fries is over $4.  That's not outrageous, but for that kind of coin they can certainly afford to pay someone to do a little dusting every now and then. It's high time to get that Wienie flying again folks!

After trying Sparti's Gyros in Coralville last weekend, I had to stop back at The Flying Wienie to compare while it was still fresh in taste buds.  Here they hand cut the gyro right off the spit which gives the outside of the meat sightly toasted texture and then finish it on the grill.  Sparti's uses pre-cut slices and grills them (so un-Chicago-like!). The Tzaziki here has the consistency of sour cream while Sparti's is more runny.  But the big clincher is the fries.  TFW cuts their own fries from fresh whole potatoes and the taste is incredible!  Tip: I always ask for "crispy" fries, they cook them a little longer to a nice deep golden perfection.  It's nothing like frozen fast food fries. This Gyro competition was no contest - The Wienie wins it big-time.

The Flying Wienie has quickly become a Cedar Rapids landmark.  The real airplane strapped to the roof of a (former) 80-year old Skelly gas station gives you your first clue that this is one cool place.  Genuine Vienna Beef hot dogs, hand-cut fries, Gyros cooked on the spit and HUGE polish sausage are just some of the reasons you'll come back.  It's a real guy-place with a down & dirty dining room and trash can lids for trays - hey, what did you expect from a former service garage?  Although I do see quite a few ladies as regulars, however.

The chicken & dumpling soup is homemade and is very good.  It has a little red pepper in it to give it a mildly spicy flavor.  Order the chili cheese dog and just try to find the dog in all of that chili and cheese sauce.  They don't skimp on portions here.

You order and pay at the counter and the cook shouts out your name out when the order's ready at the other end of the counter.  Beware of the "Wiener Nazi".  John, the owner is a great guy and still has plenty of Chicagoland attitude so he can come off as a little gruff with patrons sometimes.  No one would ever dare complain though and risk getting banned from the great grub here!

Ruby Tuesday Restaurant

Update - 1/7/2012
We ate dinner here last night and I had the sirloin steak. It was very tender for a sirloin and had good flavor.  You pick two sides with your entrees, I went with the onion rings (decent) and a tossed salad (not too special).  The downer to the meal is our waitress brought out our entrees 60 seconds after she brought the salads. I don't know why they think this is acceptable.  They really need to train their servers better than that.  The service was otherwise attentive.

Ruby Tuesday is a chain similar to Applebee's or Fridays, although not quite as good as either.  They still seem to be finding their niche.  One distinguishing feature is their well-stocked salad bar. Most chain restaurants got out of the salad bar business in the 90s.  Tuesdays does it up nicely and is a $2.99 add-on for most entrees on the menu.

On a recent visit I had the New Orleans Seafood dinner - Broiled tilapia topped with shrimp and a Parmesan cream sauce.  It had a good flavor, and was cooked about right.  My wife had the Ribeye which was full of fat and gristle - not a good value for $16.99.  Our waitress seemed uninspired and was rather curt.  I figured it was a second job for the middle aged woman and she just wanted to be home.

This is was only my second visit to Tuesday's in about two years.  At this visit, I didn't see a reason to be any more regular.  I'll see if they improve when I come back in 2011.

The more I eat here, the more I like it. I'm bumping them up a star.  I've had several sandwiches now and so far the Shish Tawook and Chicken Gyro are my favorites.  The Shish Tawook can be very messy with the lemon/oil/garlic marinade dripping out.  I order it spicy ( w/ Frank's red hot sauce) and ask for the fries on the side rather than in the sandwich as it usually comes.  Sorry, I just don't like my fries soggy.  The sandwiches (and most other menu items come in two sizes, large ($6.50) and small ($4.99). The large is big enough for two people.  If you share, it's actually a pretty good value.  The hummus is pretty good but I don't care for their falafel, it's just too plain and dry for my tastes.  The fries are good too, just $1.95 for a generous size order.  Free Wi-Fi from the coffee shop next door.  I plan to try the salads sometime, the Greek salad sounds good.

Just had the Shish Tawook sandwich.  I can see why it's so popular here.  It has chicken marinated in lemon juice, olive oil and lots of garlic (which is still on my breath). I ordered it spicy and glad I did, it was one of the best and most unusual pitas I've ever had. They put fries right on the sandwich. I didn't like the thought of that, but it worked.  Generous size portion for $6.50.  Big enough for a meal by itself.

I had the Gyro today - okay, but not great.  I prefer a Chicago style gyro, sliced off the spit and on a pillowy pita warmed on the grill.  Pita'z uses a larger, thinner pita.  It's more like "burrito-style" instead of "taco-style" .  If you want a real gyro go to Flying Wienie, Aladdin or Gyro Hut.  This was $7 with tax and didn't even come with fries.  Next time here I'll get one of their specialties like a Shish Tawook or a Shawarma.  I would come more often, but it's rather pricey for what you get.

La Camelia

I always say, I've never had a bad fajita.  I think La Camelia were doing their best to prove me wrong tonight.  We had the shrimp, beef, chicken and chorizo fajita. It was all quite bland even the chorizo.  The chips tasted like they were cooked in old grease, although the salsa was decent although made with canned tomatoes. Someone spilled a drink on the floor in the next room and they mopped it up with a Pine-sol soaked mop that immediately stunk up the whole place like a cheap nursing home.  Our server was inexperienced and inefficient. Despite the bad service and food, they were quite busy on a Friday night.  Poor suckers, they must've never seen a decent Mexican restaurant.

White Star Ale House

Update - 12/11/2011
I had dinner here Saturday night with a group of 20+ from work. It was great seeing a downtown CR business so packed on the weekend. The holiday atmosphere in the bar was festive and fun.  In just their 2nd or 3rd week open, it's clear the staff is still working the bugs out.  The wait times were very long but our waiter kept his wits and was a great host. They are receiving their "baptism by fire" however the White Star Ale House is already showing great potential and I have little doubt they will eventually find their rhythm and become a key part of the Renaissance of downtown currently under way.

Food: The Wisconsin wontons are out of this world, the calamari was a little on the rubbery side but edible and the avocado & chicken eggrolls are very good.  Our entrees could've been warmer but that could be expected for such a big group.  I enjoyed my primerib (a good value at $14.95) and was cooked perfectly at medium-rare. The mashed potatoes and acorn squash were tasty as well.  They advertise 100 American brewed beers including 35 on tap, although I'm not sure if they have all in stock just yet.  They include a number of local selections such as Millstream which is surprising rare to see on tap in CR.

Tips: They have great happy hour specials on weeknights - 1/2 price beer & well drinks.  On Wednesdays, they have 1/2 price appetizers in the bar. Live entertainment in the bar on Friday & Saturday nights.

Remember they are just getting started and try not to be so harsh on them.  This is a local establishment that is working to make a positive impact on our city's recovery.

I've only tried the bar so far, but I really like downtown Cedar Rapids' newest bar and restaurant.  Located on the first floor of the Witwer building on the corner of 2nd Ave & 3rd St. SE., the decor is somewhat upscale and very inviting.  I can see this place being a popular meeting place before and after events at Theater CR, the Paramount, the US Cell Center and the new Cedar Rapids convention center when it opens.  They have a great happy hour with half price draft beer, house wine and well drinks from 4-6 PM and again from 10-12 midnight. I like that way better than 2 for 1 where your 2nd drink gets warm or watered down while you drink the first one. Good nachos and great service.  Locally owned by Greg White.

Rise N' Dine

We finally got to try rise & dine on our 4th attempt late on a Sunday morning.  They are usually packed at this time and with little or no waiting room, we would just go to a different restaurant. The wife had an omelet with hashbrowns and toast.  She enjoyed the omelet but didn't care for the hashbrowns. They were very finely shredded which made them very airy, but she thought the taste was off.  I had the Ruben and wasn't impressed, pretty basic and the ingredients seemed like they all came out of a package.  I could've made a better sandwich at home.  The prices are average, maybe a little low on some items.  Service was decent with two waitresses handling a 3/4th full house.  I'll probably stick to the breakfast menu next time since that's their specialty.  The American fries looked like a better choice.

Hubba Hubba Hot Dogs

Hubba Hubba Hot Dogs is a one-store, locally owned business located in the former Hungry Hobo location in the Collins Rd Square shopping center.  I stopped in for the first time and had a nice experience, clean and well run.  I had the 1/4# beef Chicago Dog for $5.  It came with all the usual toppings plus banana peppers which was a nice touch. It was tasty but very messy - this ain't dashboard dining food.  At one point the fat hotdog even slipped out the bun while eating it!  They do offer a standard size 1/8# dog for $1.99 and would have to think it's much more manageable.  You can upgrade the 1/4# dog to a combo for $2.25 more, which gets you a drink and chips.  If you want fries (and they have the real, fresh-cut variety) you'll need to pay another $1, bringing your total to $8-something for a big hotdog, fries & drink.  That seems awful pricey to me.

My advice to the business:
1. Include fries with combo, people can get chips anywhere.  You have fresh-cut fries, which is something special, push that instead and you're customers will have a more unique experience.

2. Get away from the fat, sloppy dogs that you can barely get your mouth around and stick to more manageable diameter.  Offer a footlong for people that want a big dog.

3. Do something really unique to stand out from the crowd.  Sure, you have some interesting toppings, but kick it up a notch or two!  For example, there's a place in Chicago that people line up down the block to get their "duck fries" cooked in duck fat.  Hot Dougs also has the "game of the week" - some odd type of meat & seasonings for the adventurous crowd, like Cajun rattlesnake or something crazy.  Even if most people don't order it, it's a good conversation piece and it'll be good for some free press at least.  You could team up with a local meat locker to make it for you.   Check out: http://www.yelp.com/bi.... They have nearly 2,000 reviews on Yelp so they're doing something right.

My advice to my fellow Cedarapidians: Support local businesses. Give them some constructive feedback so they can improve and thrive.  It's hard to run a business these days and unless you like eating at franchises all the time, you gotta support them!

New Century Tents

We've used New Century Tents every year for the past six years at our church festival & fundraiser and they've done an excellent job every time.  This is a local, family-owned business that takes their work seriously and deals fairly with you.  They fabricate their own tents and do their own maintenance work so they're always in good shape.  That's not always the case with other rental companies.  We can rely on them to have the tent up and removed on time.  They have chairs, space heaters, dance floors and other rentals.  I called around and they have the best rates for the quality you get.  They even offer discounts for churches.   I would recommend New Century Tents for your wedding, church festival or any event you need covered space.
