Pizza Papalis

Category: Pizza

4.0 star rating

My co-workers and I make Pizza Papalis a regular stop in our downtown lunch rotation. We don't generally have time for a deep-dish pizza (although we could call ahead and have one ready when we arrive), but we've all tried multiple menu items and have enjoyed them. Stromboli, calzone, thin-crust pizza, philly steak or chicken sub, any of the personal-size flatbread pizzas... no complaints.

We've only ever had one bad experience there (a hair baked into a Spicy Chicken Stromboli), and the staff made it right by comping my co-worker's meal AND giving him a $10 gift card for his next visit.

The staff are generally friendly and relatively quick, and attentive without being annoyingly so. The quality and price of the food are what keeps us coming back, though.

Mo Joe's

3.0 star rating

Good place to stop for a snack or a coffee on your way to work: yogurt, baked goods, sandwiches, fruit, fountain pop, espresso, and some entrees to go, among other options. Mo Joe's is owned by the same fine folks who own The Blarney and Focaccia's, so they have similar fare available.

I get the impression (after a few visits) that they don't get many requests for espresso drinks, although they have a large coffee menu above the espresso machine. Every time I've ordered an espresso drink, the person who makes it seems to have to remind herself exactly how it's done. That said, the coffee tastes just fine.

If I worked in the Edison Building, I'd be inclined to go to Mo Joe's more often; as it is, I'm more likely to hit Focaccia's for food and Biggby for expensive coffee, rather than Mo Joe's for either.

Dr. Smith and Dr. Trax are a husband-and-wife team; I've only seen Dr. Smith (the wife), but I would assume that Dr. Trax is just as pleasant and professional as she is.

I've been seeing Dr. Smith for the last several months, but my husband has been seeing her for years, and we both agree that the overall experience is far more pleasant than with other chiropractors we've seen. Any time spent in the waiting room is minimal -- usually, if a patient shows up a few minutes early, they also get in a few minutes early. I've rarely had to wait even five minutes past my appointed time. Even after I've been escorted to a room, the wait for Dr. Smith to see me is only a matter of a few minutes.

My entire experience with Dr. Smith so far has been while I've been pregnant, and she's been nothing but gentle with me. She makes a few necessary modifications to her adjustments and treatment: no lying on my stomach for adjustments, no electric stimulation afterward (my husband LOVES the electrostimulation), and I get my post-adjustment vibrating back massage (aka The Thumper) sitting up instead of lying on my stomach. I always feel great when I leave -- even if I didn't really feel that bad when I went in! Even though my visits are brief, I never feel rushed; Dr. Smith always has time to listen to how I'm feeling and answer any questions I have.

The staff is super friendly and personable, the location is convenient, and the only real complaint I have involves the videos they sometimes play in the waiting room (for a very different, older demographic).

I highly recommend 1st Choice Chiropractic to anyone who has been considering seeing a chiropractor. You'll be glad you did.

Tomukun Noodle Bar

My husband and I make a point to have lunch at Tomukun every time we visit Ann Arbor. We've tried probably a third of the standard noodle menu, along with a fraction of the summer menu, and none of the entrees have ever been less than delicious. We tend to gravitate toward the ramen and pho, and usually order the pork buns as an appetizer. Their takoyaki is also quite good (although it didn't make me sigh and think of Tokyo like some takoyaki can).

It's going to be a while before we can get back up to Ann Arbor, which is a big disappointment to us: we still have so many varieties of ramen to try!

Star of India

Fabulous Indian food in a classic American diner setting!

Up until recently, this building was home to a long-standing Toledo diner favorite; however, since my husband and I weren't interested in diner food, we never ate there, even though it was mere miles from our house. When we saw that the sign at Dudley's Diner proclaimed that they now offered Indian food, we were intrigued. However, once the name switched over to Star of India, we HAD to try it.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and each member of the owner's family came out at various times during our meal and asked us how we were enjoying our food, and whether it was spiced correctly. The restaurant was clean and well-lit, although the diner setting with the Indian decor was a little bizarre at first.

We decided to start our dinner with vegetarian pekoras; the cook accidentally made veggie samosas, instead, so we got double appetizers on the house, which was unexpected (and quite tasty). The samosas were similar to those we'd had in other local Indian restaurants, but the pekoras were surprisingly moist and flavorful -- a departure from the normally dry and crispy (overdone?) pekoras we've had elsewhere.

Our meal of baigan bhartha (eggplant) and chilli chicken was perfectly spiced: medium was just about perfect for us, although next time we might request medium-hot. Our meals came with rice and naan, although we did notice that all meals on the menu do not automatically include naan (those from the tandoori oven, for example). Normally, we might have been able to polish off both dishes, but the double appetizer had put us over the top, so we took some home with us.

Here's hoping that Toledo really can support four Indian restaurants in such close proximity to one another. We loved our initial visit to the Star of India, and we'll definitely be back!

Ski's

Ski's serves delicious, home-cooked Polish favorites -- and some adaptations of other dishes with a Polish twist. The pierogies are a must-have; try them pan-fried or deep-fried. The cabbage and noodles comes with or without meatballs, and both are fantastic. Definitely start with the sauerkraut balls, though, with their sweet-and-sour dipping sauce.

The atmosphere is one of an old-fashioned family restaurant: placemats featuring ads from local businesses, friendly and attentive wait staff, and festive polka music in the background (including amusing covers of The Beatles and others).

The portions are ample, the food delicious and reasonably priced, and the staff pleasant. What more could you ask for?

Shai Mediterranean Cafè

I've visited Shai several times, and the only thing that has ever disappointed me is that the restaurant is uncomfortably cold in winter.  Besides that, I've had no complaints, apart from getting slightly dry falafel once.

As other reviewers have mentioned, you first order at the counter -- they have menus there for you to stand and peruse before you order -- then have a seat, and a server will bring your food to you. They also have baskets of pita and pita chips; I've seen some patrons simply walk up and grab a basket, while other times the server has brought one out to me while I wait.

I haven't been disappointed by anything I've tried at Shai: gyro, falafel, spinach pie, cheese bread (with a Mediterranean flair), and several other entrees. There are Mediterranean restaurants that are closer to my home, but every now and then, Shai beckons...

Quimby's At The Park

I've visited this location with my co-workers three times over the past three months, and the food and service have been on the good side of inconsistent. Our first trip was shortly after they opened, and our major complaint was the stripped-down menu (as compared to their sister restaurant in Lambertville MI). The hallmark of our second trip was a stand-in cook who burnt everyone's burgers. Our most recent trip featured a cook (with a black eye, according to the wait staff) who couldn't read the tickets very well, and made half of the orders incorrectly.

The burgers on the menu are superb, when cooked correctly, and their specials are a great deal (Wednesdays are half-off all hamburgers). Once Quimby's gets their act together with the cook and wait staff, they'll be a fine addition to downtown Toledo.

ICE Restaurant and Bar

As there now appears to be a duplicate entry for Ice, I will repeat my review of 8/8/2010 below:

Since I work in downtown Toledo, Eddy B's (now called "Ice" after their recent remodel) is one of the closer and more convenient restaurants for lunches. If it weren't so conveniently located, though, I wouldn't think twice about passing it by, and I certainly wouldn't make a trip to downtown specifically to eat here.

The food is passable, but nothing particularly special. Vegetarians beware: you won't have a ton of options (as with many other downtown restaurants). The service is hit or miss -- usually miss. Also, since it's in the basement of the PNC building, your cell phone will likely lose signal, so be forewarned if you need to stay constantly reachable.

The ambiance has certainly improved with the remodel; the restaurant looks much more upscale and trendy than the brightly-lit, slightly run-down mom-and-pop vibe it had before. However, they didn't redesign their menu at all, and are still serving the same standard fare.

If you frequently find yourself downtown, and are getting bored of the sports bars and pizza joints, a trip to Eddy B's / Ice will at least break up the monotony. Order up some chili-cheese fries, a cheeseburger, or a buffalo chicken sandwich. It's not bad... it's just not great.

Taylor Photo

Taylor Photo has been able to process just about everything I've thrown at them: 35mm print or slide film (cross-processed upon request), 120, even 127 (Brownie film) and 110 cartridge film, all in either black and white or color. I've had no issue with the quality of their work or their pricing. Color film is usually processed by the next day, but black and white film is processed in batches, maybe once or twice a week, due to lower volume.

Taylor also specializes in movie transfers, although I haven't used their transfer services yet.

Mr. Taylor is a treasure trove of photographic trivia! If you're not careful, you could end up shooting the breeze for a half hour about the uses of 110 film in x-ray machines, the toxicity of the Kodachrome process, or photo enlarging. It makes for a very personable transaction, rather than just dropping off or picking up.
