The Coho is divided into a "adults only" (think no kids, not necessarily kinky) section and a family section. The adults only section seems to be a building that was recently built and therefore is significantly nicer. The rooms over there are called 'sunset suites' or something like that. If you are going for a romantic weekend with the significant other, I would definitely recommend staying there. We spent our first two nights over there but had to move since we made a late booking and couldnt get all four nights in the same room. Those rooms have a jetted tub, peekaboo window from the bathroom into the bedroom area, nice shower, generally nicer furnishings including a small loverseat and some other nice touches like a pair of binoculars. The rooms over there are right above the hotel's firepits though. For the most part guests were respectful and didnt stay there too late. The party people on the beach were not as respectful though.
The family section is older, but has been remodeled in the same style as the newer building. There are still hints of the old '70s though like the radical fridge/stove/sink combo appliance (never seen anything like it) that is still alive and rockin it's '70s pastel green door. The shower over here has been described in other reviews as a "cave" but that implies a certain amount of spaciousness. It really is more like a sarcophagus with a curtain. This side does have a three panel wide window though (the adult side is just a standard two panel wide slider) which really opens up the awesome view and lets a lot more light in.
Pros:
* GREAT view! (make sure you get at least 2nd story if not 3rd to get the full benefit of the view)
* Very friendly and helpful front of house staff
* Free continental breakfast
* Decor is upscale compared to other places on the coast
* Location is good (not directly on 101 but not too far from it either)
* Kitchenettes are handy
* Sunset suites bathrooms are nice
* Gas firepits outside and fireplaces in the rooms are a nice touch (not all rooms have fireplaces - make sure to ask for one if you want it)
* Indoor pool and hot tub and sauna (we didnt use these but it would be great for families)
* DVD rental selection was pretty good.
* In room items like salt water taffy, root beer, chips, etc. were very reasonably priced.
* The hotel claims to have some good "green" practices - recycle, etc. which is nice to see.
* Free Wi-Fi
Cons
* Housekeeping was not good. I think the staff here is mostly just understaffed to keep up with a place like this
* The plastic Adirondack chairs on the balcony are way too cheap for a place like this. I thought I was going to break them and I am not a very big person.
* The beds are below standard for a place positioning itself as a boutique hotel. They are set up on cheap metal frames and the mattress is pretty beat up.
* The showers on the family side are a joke. You guys really just need to replace the one wall of the stall with a glass wall and that would help a lot. Also a glass door would be good too.
* This is a small thing, but there were no knives (butter or sharp) in the sunset suite.
* Internet access was unpredictable. Good enough for basic Internet usage but not reliable enough for streaming movies/TV.
* Getting to the beach requires a short walk down the street (1/2 block)
We would come back here again for sure if we were in the market for a beachfront hotel. Normally we try to rent a house on the beach, but werent able to swing that this time. To the Coho crew - keep working on it; you are making this a real nice place and a standout on the Oregon coast. We would recommend it to friends & family.
