In Italy one cannot walk more than a block without passing a couple of places like this, yet some how here in New Orleans (a city with a sizable Italian ancestry), this is the only place of its kind. As the competition is limited (also because of the use of what seemed to be quality ingredients) the prices is a bit higher than one might expect -- Paninis start at $10 here for example. I really like the food and it is just a couple of blocks from my house, but I just can't justify paying twice as much as a poboy for a sandwich here very frequently.

I went here because Mo' Fishing down the road was out of shrimp, so he sent me here. The first visit, left me unaware if there was even an employee present in the building, so I perused the nice selection of fishing gear while waiting for an employee to emerge. When he did appear, he was swamped by the 5 or 6 people in the place who all wanted bait. He seemed pretty short with everyone.

The second visit left me with nicer more attentive employees, who gladly "threw in a couple extra small shrimp." A very odd warning that the shrimp might die if I didn't put them in another container was given. Well, I rushed back to the dock to transfer the shrimp into my bucket designed specifically to let river/sea water flow through it, and I found that all the shrimp were already dead. Was I warned that they "might die" because they were already knocking on death's door?

Overall, the staff is friendlier, and the bait of a more alive variety down at mo' fishing, so if you aren't faced with the rare circumstance that he is sold out of bait, pass this place and go there.

note: this place does have a few items tangentially related to fishing that a pure tackle shop might not including Costas (and other sunglasses and sunglasses accessories) and a larger selection of rods and reels.

Wow this place impressed me. Coming from New Orleans, it takes a lot for a seafood market to really impress me, but this place sure did. The selection was AMAZINGLY VAST, and the amount of fresh local fish made me almost pee myself. It doesn't end there though; the place has dips and sushi and some amazing fresh sourdough bread.

This is a great classic steakhouse. It is the kind of place where things never change - the kind of place where they serve the same meal today that the did 40 or more years ago. Good beef, cooked simply, with classic sides and a drink.

I'm not sure whether to say that Mikimoto is the highest quality of the city's inexpensive sushi, or the most inexpensive of the city's quality sushi. I think you get what I mean though -- They have good decent sushi, at decent prices.

The location isn't the best, but they do have a drive through window for takeout if you aren't comfortable getting out of your car in the middle of Gert Town.

Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar

I've been to superior a couple of times now since it is so near to my house, and I will admit that I will probably return here as often as I can afford to. When I had first heard about the restaurant that was coming, I expected something that would fall more on the frankie&johnnies/liuzza's end of the spectrum, but when I first dined there, I was please to see that it probably falls closer to the Galatoire's end of the spectrum (though much more casual).

Every oyster dish I've tried has been phenomenal (raw, bienville, chargrilled, etc.). And the redfish I had on my first visit was a real show stopper. On my second visit, i ordered a seafood pasta dish (which, by design, limits the dish's ability to be truly impressive) and was served exactly what I expected.

If you haven't been here yet, I get over here and give it a try.

This place just overtook pure as my favorite frozen yogurt shop. The flavors are ample. The flavors are good. The prices are great (seriously... my full cup the other day was about $3). The location is stellar. The hours are even good. There is no reason anyone should ever go to pinkberry again!

The service that is given for $15 here is a steal. They give a great haircut, including hot lather shaving on the neck and around the ears, followed by a brief shoulder massage from a neat antique massage machine. This husband and wife team are both really nice people, too.

I have long been waiting for New Orleans to get a Turkish restaurant, and we finally have one. Turkish cuisine has had great influence over both Greek and Mediterranean/Mid-Easter cuisines. Fatoush is a nice little cafe in a wonderfully redeveloped space, that serves interesting takes on dishes you thought you were familiar with. It may be a bit pricey, but I discovered that the portions are larger than I would have expected them to be.

Mystic Krewe of Nyx

I really enjoyed this parade. It reminded me of what Muses used to be like before it got over the top and developed a far over-inflated sense of self importance. The theme was pretty good, and the floats were pretty reflective of the theme, which is rare for a first year krewe. It was simply ladies who want to have a fun night parade, and that can be enough to make for a good parade for spectators.
