Amelie

Categories: Wine Bars, Restaurants, Lounges
Neighborhood: Nob Hill

4 star rating

According to the girls in our group Amelie is cute. I'm not exactly sure how (or what?) qualifies a wine bar as "cute", but I'll play along just because I have too much fun with it.

Besides, this wine bar has a lot going on in its favor. Great service, food and wine selection is the perfect wine bar trifecta in my book and Amelie delivers on all counts. Cheers to that.

The Matterhorn Swiss Restaurant

Swiss comfort food at its best. If you like fondue and a choice wine as much as I do, you will wish you had never discovered this authentic Swiss spot -- especially if you have any inclination to keep in shape (and no, pear shape does not count). Yes, it can be that habit-forming.

One of these days, I will have to try the a la carte menu. It looked promising, but who eats dinner before 6pm?

What can I say that hasn't been said already? Nice bay views, great specialty shops, good food selection. I dunno. It's the Ferry Building, it practically sells itself. You following me, ShamWow guy?

The Farmer's Market is a SF institution in and of itself. Always worth a visit on a Saturday morning.

Umami

If you like trendy places that serve sushi, Umami may very well be the spot for you. The food doesn't quite live up to the nice ambiance or crowd, but in my experience most trendy restaurants rarely do.

If you're looking for a great spot that serves sushi, do check it out. Odds are you won't be disappointed. However, if you're looking for a spot that serves great sushi, this isn't it.

San Francisco Tennis Club

Great indoor and outdoor courts, friendly people, ample opportunities to meet new tennis partners at all levels, ability to reserve court on short notice... The list goes on. Fortunately, when it comes to tennis it doesn't take a whole lot to make me happy.

If you're serious about tennis (or planning to get serious), this is the club for you. There are other benefits that come with membership, which are worth exploring in detail, but even if you're just interested in playing tennis, you'll be in good company.

This is my personal "Cheers". Well technically, in spirit only I suppose as nobody here knows my name. But that's ok, it's just the kind of place where you can grab a nice dinner or a late-night bite (or drinks) with friends in a more intimate setting without feeling cramped or rushed. And even though the ambiance is nice, the main attraction is the food, which so far has always been good and consistent -- even on busy nights. To me that's something worth commending.

Gelateria Parmalat

Category: Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt

I remember when this place first opened. Top-notch gelato served up in all sorts of unique and wild flavors. Fast forward to today and the only thing that hasn't changed is the length of the line out the door. The gelato unfortunately is not quite as good as back in the day, although it's still a-okay in my book.

Either way, I doubt most people care as this place has accumulated a bit of a cult following over the years and, let's face it, gelato is gelato. Especially, when it's 90 degrees outside.

Romero Britto Gallery

5 star rating

If you're wondering how Miami became an international hub for contemporary art, come on down and get acquainted with Romero's work. But, then again, if you're interested in contemporary art you probably are already familiar with his distinguished neo pop work. Either way, this gallery should be a mandatory stop whenever your path leads through Miami.

Pasha's

This is a great option when on the go (and who on Lincoln Rd. isn't on the go?). It's not gourmet food, but then again it's not trying to be. It's fast, fresh and tasty -- a combo that so far has always worked for me when in a hurry.

Albeit, I should note that the quality has gone down a bit since it first opened, which is probably to be expected seeing how popular it is during peak times.

Ghirardelli Chocolate

Categories: Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt, Chocolatiers and Shops
Neighborhood: Fisherman's Wharf

2 star rating

The Ghirardelli brand has a lot of built-in goodwill when it comes to chocolate and ice cream. Sadly, this Ghirardelli cafe turns out is more novelty than anything else.

Worth a stop when showing out-of-towners around, but when it comes to ice cream there are fortunately much better options available to the discerning gelato aficionado. The skimpy drizzle of an excuse for a hot chocolate fudge wasn't even hot. Screwing up ice cream certainly takes a special kind of talent.
