Carman's Country Kitchen

this place is like walking into a knick knack shop or a small town southern diner.  the place is super tiny and charming! i think it can seat perhaps 10? this place is cash only peeps! carman is charming and her menu changes often. she experiments with different flavors and your palette will not be disappointed. do not deviate from the menu! seriously, follow her recommendations. i got the belgian waffles with mango. delicious! i wanted to lick my plate. and i can do this with little effort since i have a flat nose. :)

carman comes out and says a hello or a morning to the customers. she cooks all the meals with tlc.

the food is plentiful and makes you crave more. the coffee is as bold as their sign which reads they put the c*nt in country. need i say more? :)

ok, so my poetry sucks. but mexican post sucks more. insert prop gang signs for pretty carrie. btw, i know i misspelled expecting, but creative freedom dudes!

note, i have eaten at mexican post 3 times. i ate here for lunch when they were fairly new. my order took a long time and i had to ask the waiter what the wait was and he forgot my order. ok. i think he was new. my chicken tacos were good. a bit pricey, but good. the next 2 times i have eaten here, the service is always a bit slow and i have gone both at dinner and lunch hours. my soup has come out cold and i didn't bother sending it back since i was so hungry from waiting! i have also been here for cocktails and their appetizers blew me away! seriously, shrimp wrapped in bacon! awesum! the frozen daiquiris are good, but i am no expert. i found them tasty though. for the food and price and sometimes lack of service, i am not a fan.

my bloody valentine. yup, on their jukebox. enough said.

i love this place for brunch. i like the crowd. i like how they serve all their brunch sandwiches with not skinny strips of bacon, but thick slices of pork bliss! mmmmmm.

my friends and i go here for brunch because there are usually a few veggie choices for them and we can sit in a big booth and just catch up. they don't make iced coffee, but our waiter was a doll and he made them. :)
i got french toast with cherries on the side. it was sweet enough without the cherries, but it was all yummie.

standard is the perfect place to start your saturday morning. any morning that starts with a bacon mountain is a good morning. :)

Wizard World Comic Convention 5/31/08

black manta booed my friend at comic con and also told him that to be at the comic con, one should know comics. this is why i heart going to comic con. people not only dress up as their fave hero or villain, they think they are them! backtrack, my friend, dave, asked wonder woman a question, but she was actually her sister, donna troy (if i have geeked out all of you. i apologize). this spawned the above response from black manta. i should have told him, go kill aquaman's baby again! (another geek reference).

there was free swag. not as much in the past years. philly tends to get jipped in this department. the good stuff goes to ny it seems. but, there were tons of people in costume, ie. iron man, transformers, the usual storm troopers, spiderman, luigi, retro girl, marvel girl, cyclops, V, zelda, galactus, bazooka, and on and on. there were games on display, contra, the new hulk game, guitar hero and rock band. artists alley had established talented artists, ie. michael oeming and new up and coming artists.

there are also special guests, iron sheik signing stuff.  eugene was there, another wrestler. kevin nash! check out the guests since they add new ones. take pics! ask questions! it's all good!

there was the usual  jedi fights and the costume contest. people here are friendly and one can unleash one's inner/outer dorkness. there are some good deals here for back issues and graphic novels. just be prepared to dig and look thru boxes of comics.  i got a bunch for 1/2 price. people even help you look for issues! toys, movies, original art, prints, swords, shirts, and posters line the aisles.  i suggest walking around once before buying anything, that way you can scope all the deals first.

there are tables for you to play magic or warhammer or warcraft. there are chairs and place to lounge in the hall as well to read your new loot or to talk geek with other attendees. :)

go for the experience. go to buy original art and get it signed or even get your own cartoon made! support comic book writers and artists. i go because i care and i love comics. i wanna live in a world where people believe in dragons, elves, ogres, xmen, zombies, thor, batman and where good triumphs over evil, even in cross overs.

green drinks with things that look like sea monkeys, but instead were specimens of pure vodka was my first drink here at the happy hour. the cucumber contraption was a delight on my tongue. a great combo. the sliders were yum. (i like anyhing miniature). the one thing that i was bummed about was the s'more fake out. y'all know what i am talking about. i was so super stoked to bite into chocolate marshmellow goodness and was surprised to chomp chomp down on fig and cheese. it was good, but i thought it was a s'more. it was s'not. :(

the music was popping with great beats (thanks justin!:) sonam is a hip place and everyone was so nice and spot on for drinks and food. the chef even brought out edamame! mmmm. generous amount of food and chic group of yelpers made this event quite the place to be!

glad to have met new faces and see familiar faces. always a treat! and yes, i will always throw my gang signs when in fotos. and yes, apparently, i only pose in fotos with lots of asian girls. ; )

Moshi Moshi - CLOSED

hello? hello? any sushi place named after the japanese telephone greeting is aces in my book. the yellow book that is!

yes, it always looks closed, but just read the sign, it says open or closed. it is an intimate place, quiet with the obligatory hall and oates playing on the stereo. nice.  edamame and private eyes playing. double nice. the sushi is good, not the best, but for the cute atmosphere, fair price and friendly staff, it is worth it. come here with a small group of friends to enjoy fresh sushi and to hold a conversation.

it is super dark in here and even with my squinty slanty eyes, i had trouble adjusting to the daylight. bring sunglasses!

Urban Saloon

what doesn't belong here? me. walked in on a wednesday nite and immediately fought the urge to flee. the place is super spacious. it is in a good area and the sound system is great. but, good stereo sound and big space  does not a good bar make.

the crowd here scares me. i actually saw 2 girls take a cab here. why?! the crowd of baseball caps (if you are playing baseball, then yes wear it, but, dudes, you are at a bar) bad first dates, and popped collars and flip flops does not depict a crowd i am used to. sort of the preps gone bad type crowd. the bartenders were nice, but a bit slow to check up on us. they made my drink according to my request and the edamame and the "urban fries" were just eh. we got about 5 drinks and the food and the bill was under 40 bucks.  the place has potential, let's hope it can live up to its hype.

nothing in this bar struck me as urban or as saloon-esque. yes, they have nice flat screens. no, there were no cowboys in chaps or gunslingers or bull riding.

btw, i think wednesday they have bands perform. if you like cover bands doing daughtry and maroon 5 covers, then jump to it. as for me, i think i will stay home and watch deadwood and do my own shots of whiskey sans the prep crowd.

Figs

this restaurant is the perfect dinner date place. it is cozy with just the right amount of ambient lighting, exotic music, the smells of foreign foods wafting in the air. this place is a well kept secret here in the fairmount hood. boys, take note, take your lady here and she will think you are connoisseur of exotic cuisine and you will totally woo her!

my dinner here was yum from start to finish. my greek pasta was cooked to perfection. not too greasy. fresh tomatos and herbs. light to the tongue. the mussels were fresh and steamed with the right amount of lemon and tomato seasoning. the grilled vegetables were cooked so the veggies remained crispy and they weren't burnt. the chicken was tender. the mango sorbet was the perfect ending to a lovely meal.

this little nook in the wall place is cash only and BYOB. i suggest making reservations here since it is prolly no bigger than a living room and you wouldn't want your lady to think you are some goober during your wooing process!

figs remains one of my favorite places to dine and if i am lucky one of the places where i get taken to for dining and wining(not whining).

mini electric guitars. this cafe has little plastic electric guitars that you place in the coffee lid hole, so it doesn't spill all over you as you jauntily walk around the city. genius. pure genius. if you are a complete klutz like myself, these little things make a huge difference.

if i weren't completely won over by their guitar lid plugs, their coffee would have won me over. this is my new place for iced and hot coffee. strong coffee. quick service. simple syrup. a friendly crew. the dudes explained to me what the electric plastic guitars were for. i thought they were fancy toothpicks for cheese. which makes no sense being i was at a coffee place and there was no cheese..

the cafe is small, the windows are big and airy and you can people watch. it is limited space, so i usually do a drop by.

now when i get my afternoon coffee, i can walk back to office, knowing i won't spill any of it. i am so easy to please!
