Al's Steak House

Al's Steak House has brought me out of a 4 month review-writing hiatus. This place has been around for over 57 years and yet this is just my first time here. I really need to step up my game. Anyway, a friend recommended that I try it out and I'm so glad I did. I got a medium Cheesesteak + Mushrooms + Green Peppers ($9). As other reviews have said, the cheesesteak is gigantic and I could only muster down half (though I am really excited that I get to eat the other half later tonight!) They are very generous with their meat and fillings, and don't overdo it with cheese. This is exactly how it should be!

Some other little notes:
- There's a huge glass jar on the cashier counter filled with yummy pickled hot peppers free for the taking.
- Two signs inside the restaurant say "NO CELL PHONES PERMITTED" -- hence the lack of food photos.
- All canned sodas for 90c
- Large cheesesteak is 2 mediums (in both price and size)
- There are 4-5 tables, but I was the only one that dined in. They had several people call in for a pick-up order.
- Closes at 8pm on most days, early dinner, it is!

There really is no other place like this and I would def recommend it for the occasional cheesesteak craving.

I haven't written a review in a while, but after a meal at "ESS" I felt an urge. During a short weekend visit in Atlanta, my BF and I yelped for some quality food in Midtown and found this. We weren't able to get reservations until 10pm, but we weren't very hungry so a late night meal was good with us. We decided to show up at 930 and wait at the bar, but they had a table free so hey, win win!

It has a very relaxed feel like you're visiting a nice farm house... my BF argues its not a farm feel, its just a natural feel. Whatevs. Same, no?

We ordered 2 apps, 1 side, and 1 entree to share. We felt this was the best way to taste more than 2 dishes and not overeat at the same time. I let the waitress know beforehand that we wanted to share everything.

The 2 apps (pork belly with kimchi grits, and steak tartare) and a side of collards came out first. First of all, you can never ever, ever go wrong with pork belly. This one was no different. The kimchi grits sounded like they could be good because i love kimchi in general, but they were actually not as flavorful as I hoped. No matter, the pork belly was great. The tartare was also delicious and it came with a fried egg. I was completely expecting to get a sunny side up fried egg, but instead got what looked like a soft boiled egg that had been deep fried? I'm not actually sure how they made it, but it had the yolk consistency of a poached egg. I loved it.

For the entree we agreed on the catfish with cauliflower grits. I was expecting to pick at a dish, small portioned. Instead we each got separate plates with a very generous serving of half a filet of catfish on a bed of cauliflower grits. The entire plate was delicious and we were STUFFED. I dream of grits like this.

Dinner here made a short trip in Atlanta memorable enough. Thanks!

I went back recently and was caught off guard with a new (anemic) menu that lacked many of my favorite items including:

fatty tuna sashimi
liver kushiyaki
wagyu beef kushiyaki
Coedo White Ale

I'm not sure why they removed over half of the items that originally appeared on their menu, perhaps it was a business decision, but it makes me sad.

That fatty tuna was so, SO GOOD. Sadness!

On a brighter note, I tried their fish and chips. It was a amazing. I'd go back for that and a beer for an after-work snack.

I read about Kushi on a blog in early of 2009 and had been anticipating it's opening.  After it did open in April, I wanted to wait maybe a month so that if it turned out poorly, I wouldn't  be able to blame it on the fact that it just opened.  So then came along the ever so infamous livingsocial deal.  I got mine for free since 3+ people signed up from my link.  This then gave me 50 free dollars to spend on anything at a restaurant i'd been dying to eat at for so long.  After pushing back the date, I finally made reservations to go yesterday.

Service: Our waitress was stupendous (I never use that word, but I really want to right now).  The menu was a bit overwhelming at first, but she very thoroughly explained it in a quite concise manner.  I was impressed already.  She made awesome suggestions (Ex. We got 1 order of fatty tuna sashimi for $10 with 2 pieces, but she told us there was a special going on for that fatty tuna for $18 with 5 pieces. Score!)  She made sure to refill our water even though a glass bottle of water was left on the table for you to refill yourself.  I could go on, but we made sure to leave her a healthy tip! (Note: If the service hadn't been this good, I probably would give this place a 4 instead).

Food:  Since we had $50 to spend for free, we decided to spend another $50 and just eat everything we wanted.  We started off with hamachi, salmon, and fatty tuna (chutoro) sashimi.  Can you say MELT-IN-YOUR-MOUTH?  I had to savor every single bite and I almost didn't want to swallow it down.  This has got to be the way fish is meant to be eaten.

We then got some miso soup and a salmon rice ball, both were standard - nothing exciting.  Then came our braised pork belly, which was pretty good and well made, but I don't think i'd get it again.  Lastly, our kushiyaki plate came - we got 4 skewers: chicken breast with plum and shiso, buta bara (pork belly), kalbi (short rib), and liver.  The two notables were the buta bara and the liver.  The former was so... UMAMI!  The liver was actually too salty, but after getting past the saltiness, it was actually really good.  Next, we got the duck thigh from the robata menu (charcoal grill).  It was pretty good, the skin was nice and crispy and the meat, tasty.  Lastly, after finishing all of this off, we went back and ordered some more salmon sashimi and nigiri.  It was such a gluttonous night, but oh so worth it.

I'd also recommend getting a bottle of asahi beer.  Good stuff and hard to find elsewhere.

Thank you Kushi for coming to DC!

    ::UPDATE:: 11/27/10
I went back with a Groupon deal!  There was a bit of a wait, so we went to the bar area to grab a couple of Japanese beers.  When the bartender checked my ID, she asked me if I was Filipino.  I told her I was Thai and she suddenly busted out in Thai in response.  She then gave me awesome suggestions and let me taste the Echigo Red Ale on tap before I ordered it.  We were also about to get Sapporo, but she advised against it because "you can get that anywhere, you should try our other ones.  My favorite is the Coedo White Ale."  So we went with her suggestion and LOVED it.  If you're a beer person, I highly recommend it.  Did I mention that I love the service here?!

New things I tried this time:
    - Shigoku oysters  - super fresh served with a slice of lime (not lemon!) and a special sauce, I really couldn't make out what it was, but it sure was tasty.
    - Wagyu Beef Skirt Steak kushiyaki - YUM
    - Liver kushiyaki- much better and less salty when ordered Tare style.

This is officially my favorite restaurant in DC.  I will go back with or without coupon.

Second Look: MUCH BETTER (3.5 stars)

OK so after my 2 star review, I received a very nice apology from their manager and an offer to come try it again. I decided to take the offer because I really do want to love this place.

This time I was a bit smarter about my food choices.

Apps: Popcorn and Cornbread. Popcorn of the day was a BBQ flavor. I didn't really like that particular seasoning, but it was interesting. I'd recommend it  for a larger group. The cornbread was so delicious. It had corn kernals embedded in the bread and came with a honey butter spread; it was a perfect opening to dinner -- highly rec.

Entree: Skirt Steak and Enchilada and Southern Pan-Fried Chicken (with Waffles). I enjoyed both -- chicken was a bit dry, but the flavor was great and the skin was extra crispy. It comes with mac n cheese and a choice of a 2nd side. The entire plate together looks like a work of yummy art. It's probably something you should try on a first visit.

I'm coming back in a month for their brunch, pretty excited to try their breakfast/lunch options!

    A disappointing experience.

We made reservations for 2 on a Tuesday night (8:30pm). It's amazing how packed this place gets on an ordinary weeknight, so we didn't actually get seated until 9pm.

Apps: Chicken Wings -- pretty good, not bad. flavorful, going a little bit for a burnt taste? Classic Deviled Eggs -- $4 for 4 eggs. Nothing special, but I bet the one with crab meat, etc for $14 is good. Wasn't going to pay that much for it.

Entrees: I kindly asked our waitress what her favorite entree was and she got so excited about the planked salmon ("out of this world"). So alright! I'll get that while the bf ordered the surf and turf. Minutes later, the waitress returned saying they were out of the salmon... whomp whomp. I then asked her what she thought of the prime rib and she said it was good, so I went with that and got it done medium rare.

My bf's surf and turf with (8oz cut, crab cakes, asparagus, and zucchini) came out pretty good. The best part of the plate was the steak, cooked perfectly and tasted great. The crab cakes were good, but a little salty. He didn't touch his asparagus because they were chewy and hard to eat. The zucchini was surprisingly very spicy... not sure what happened there.

    The Downfall:
My 10oz prime rib with mac n cheese and cauliflower came to me half pink and half cooked well (so dry, it was white). So I decided that maybe the waitress misheard me and thought i said medium-well. If that were the case, then i'd finish my plate quietly. i asked her if i had ordered medium well or medium rare, and she confirmed that i said medium rare and took the plate back. By the time I got it back, my bf was already done with his meal and it was nearly 10:30pm. I had a feeling this was going to happen, but the prime rib came back dripping red juices and raw. I wasn't going to complain again so I told her it was fine. I ate 2 pieces, wrapped it up in a box and took it home to broil. The sides were great though, i'd recommend them.

$80 meal and I didn't even get to eat my dinner... I think i'd give this place another try, but I definitely will not be ordering a prime rib. My bf also noted that in most cases, restaurants would at least give a discount for mistakes.. sadness. I guess they really don't care if they lose 1 customer.

so em effing good.  I've never had krn bbq this way before and i'm sooo happy and grateful that my bf's korean co-workers introduced him to nak won. He took me here last night and since i told him I missed lunch, we got two orders of the bbq pork ($15 per order).. probably enough for 3-4 people.  it comes with a wonderful selection of banchan,  a pot of tofu stew, an egg souffle? pot, a basket of greens, and personal dishes with thin slices of pickled daikon that you use as a wrap.

WHO KNEW?! the delicious combination of daikon, lettuce, a few banchan toppings, and pork harmonized so freaking beautifully. i've never described food that way before, but i feel inclined to do so today.  i ate at least 10 wraps.. probably 15. it was a whole lotta food for a very, very decent price.

i am so coming back.

ps. hole-in-the-wall alert! you would not think to even try it unless you knew that there was yumminess to be had inside.

Came here this past Saturday in a group of 8 for brunch. I checked Yelp prior to going to see what food recs many people had, but I couldn't find any! The majority of the reviews just rave about the unlimited sangria and say food is "decent." But what food?! It also didn't help that the website doesn't have the menu up yet. I shall help fix this problem.

Before I start just wanted to note that service here is absolutely fantastic and the space is incredibly spacious.

I got the Pollo Ranchero - crispy corn tortilla topped with shredded chicken, refried black beans and scrambled eggs. It also came with a side of REALLY YUMMY guac. I absolutely recommend getting this!

I also lovee their breakfast breads basket, so many different selections of small pastries. Def a plus in my book.

Lastly, one of my friends got the Tortilla Espanola which is a kind of fluffy omelet with veggies and potatoes. It sat on top of a crab mix. That was a horrible description on my part do to not being able to look it up their website, my bad! It was pretty good, not as good as the pollo, but she enjoyed it.

I would definitely come back next time I'm in the city.

Pho House

I always knew there was good stuff hiding in the far foreign lands of Maryland. I have never been to Germantown before, but had to this past week for work. I'm really getting to know Montgomery County real well for this job! Anyway, on this particular day I was craving pho, so a quick yelp search revealed a 4-star one right across the street! Lucky meeee.

Boy did it hit the spot. Usually pho is pho, stuff your mama makes you at home if you're lucky enough to have a Vietnamese mama. It's not something I would think to write a review about, but I had such a pleasant experience here, that I now want to write one. (The other exception was Pho Real in SS for very different reasons.) The meat at Pho 75 is better, but the broth here is absolutely slurp worthy.

I also love that they offer a more extensive menu than other pho joints. It reminds me of Hai Duong in Eden, but with banh mi too! I hope to be back sooner than later.

This is a really conflicting review for me. Was in town for work so I decided to check out this popular pho place.

it was DELICIOUS. It was a clearer broth and pretty much as good as pho gets. YUM, i wanted to sip every last bit of it!

So why the 3? Because it tasted like a 5, but I really want to give it a 2. 3 is my compromise. I'm not one to believe that MSG causes headaches, but I went back to work with the most debilitating headache EVER. So bad I wanted to pass out! I'm not even sure if they use MSG (tho they don't claim "NO MSG" like others) and I know I'm in the minority, but omg it was so painful. And it's because of this that I don't dare go back. Sad life.

Ren's Ramen

I was so happy that Ren's moved from Bethesda to Wheaton -- less than 10min from my office in SS!! So I came by for lunch last week absolutely starving. I ordered the miso ramen ($10.00) with additional toppings of corn ($0.75) and boiled egg ($2.00).

The Good: The noodles were cooked so well -- soft and not chewy. I absolutely loved the boiled eggs. The yolk had a similar consistency to poached eggs, but I like these better because they won't accidentally break and mix in with the broth at inopportune moments, haha.

The Bad: Who spilled the salt?! The broth, though nicely thick and full, was too salty to me. My two friends who accompanied me agreed too. I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to be, but I left chugging water. The pork was good, but I would have liked some more of it!

The Ugly: It killed my stomach.. mostly gonna blame my weak stomach for this, but it's all I had eaten that day, soooo.. yeah.

I feel like this might be blasphemy or comparing apples to oranges, but I had a better experience at Toki Underground the week before. Crazy talk, I know.

Second Look!

I went in for a second tasting after my sister came back from a recent visit and had encouraging words -- she exclaimed that it was just as good as the ramen she had in LA (Daikokuya, major cult spot). This shouldn't have surprised me since menu items at new restaurants tend to taste differently every week as they tweak and tweak away.

This time I got the Kimchi Hakata and loved every slurp of it. The broth was thick and full, flavorful, and had just enough spice. I didn't ask for additional toppings like I did last time, but the portions ended up being just right anyway.

I also tried an appetizer on the specials -- grilled corn on the cob covered with a five-spice butter. NOMs. I love corn and I loved it. However, I should not ever pay $5 for corn again!

Oh, and this time I went on a Friday night at around 8pm; there was a 40min wait. Not bad, I think the rush/hype and complaints of 2-3hour waits may have died down a bit -- this is a very good thing! My faith has been restored. Will try the curry one next time!

    Story Time --
I was so incredibly stoked when I heard DC was FINALLY getting its first Ramen focused shop. All the hype around this one little restaurant was driving me crazy and trying it for myself one week after it's grand opening felt like an eternity for some reason.

WAITING TIME: I was not going to wait 3 hours for a bowl of ramen that may or may not live up to its hype so I made sure to go EARLY. We got there around 5:15 and put our names down for a seating for 5. When we asked how long it might be, the host said, "sorry, I have no idea." Err.. ok. So then we asked how long it'd be for 3 people (since 2 of our party hadn't arrived yet) and he said up to 1.5hours. Ok, I can deal with that. So we hippity hopped on over to Granville Moores to pass the time and wait for a phone call back. Surprisingly enough we received one just 45 minutes later.

I have to note that we still only had 3 in our party as the other 2 were running late. Despite this, they still sat us and let us hold the other 2 seats. We felt bad putting them in that position, but it was great service and I don't think it was too, too busy just yet.

DRINK: All cocktails are $10 each and Toki Monster is.. not for the little leagues. They spray the glass with Scotch, toss in some ice, Bourbon, and I don't know what else, BUT here's the kicker: they put a skewer of pork belly to garnish. Its' really interesting because you can smell the goodness of the pork belly seep up your nose while you're sippin on some hard liquor. it's was quite an intriguing drink and I recommend it for those of you who like it hard.

FOOD: I got the classic and all I can say is that it was not bad. I have had pretty damn good ramen in Japantown in SF (Tanpopo) and so that's the only thing I can compare it to. The pork was damn tasty, but not enough! 2-3 pieces for the large bowl. The broth and noodles were pretty good, but not out-of-this-world amazing. Compared to the other ramen place I've been to, this was a notch below it, but I don't have much to complain about. For DC, I'm very happy this place opened up.

DESSERT: I don't normally get dessert, but my friend ordered a plate of cookies and milk. Best MF-ing Cookies ever! They were warm, goo-ey, and yummy. I would consider going there just for the cookies, haha.

ok end story. Sorry for the long review.
