A coffee house extraordinaire near Shelter Island. Punk attitude with a serious chef and barista talent behind the front counter. Who ever heard of a free fresh fruit with whipped cream amuse bouche at a coffee shop? Awesome. Spicy egg scrambles, sailor's granola with bananas, and power smoothies all delicious, too. Make this your pre-beach brunch stop or just dive into a rich cappuccino to go.

On the main highway crossroads in dusty downtown Beatty, this brand-new coffee shop is run by a local family. Free Wi-Fi, strong espresso drinks, home-baked muffins and couches for sitting down out of the sun. Awesome! It's your only real coffee shop for 100 miles, so don't miss stopping by.

Greg is simply the best. Backed when I owned PCs before I switched to Apple, this guy saved me many times over with honest service, money-saving advice and reconditioned peripherals. Don't hesitate to give him your business. So helpful!

Truckee, you have a serious java jones -- there are a confusing number of coffee shops in this town. After having given all of them a spin, Coffeebar is the only one I go back to and drop coin at. The quality of your espresso drink or pour-over depends on the baristo/a working that day, but happy-hour specials and discounts for bringing your own mug are bonuses. Plus they've got this insanely good streudel made by a local baker that is like sugar pastry heroin. Hang out on the patio outdoors and enjoy the free Wi-Fi.

Midway Antique Mall

Mid-century modern paradise! If you're a collector that's flush with cash, the vendor called "Googie Time" has astounding displays that look like Mad Men TV sets. Danish modern, atomic modern, 1950s cracked ice Formica dinette sets, and so much more. The rest of this antique mall is also worth a browse, especially for vintage kitchen goodies and tiki ware.

True Sake

For sake connoisseurs, this shop in Hayes Valley can't be beat. The knowledgeable owner even has her own book all about sake, and the shop hosts free tasting and meet-the-brewer events. Whatever you're looking for, she probably has it in stock, from koshu aged brews to junmai daiginjo (though I couldn't find any nama-zake). Small, but aesthetically killer selection of tokkuri, sake cups and accessories, too. Show owner comment »

Palo Alto Creamery

My reliably tasty stand-by breakfast, lunch & brunch spot in downtown Palo Alto. It's hard to find an old-fashioned diner that also serves modern takes on the comfort-food classics, but the Creamery pulls it off. And man, those thick milkshakes in a dozen different flavors (yes, with the silver sidecar of overflowing goodness) are addictive.

Sometimes, the rushed staff don't get my order completely right. And sure, it's still just diner food at the end of the day, though above-average compared to what you'd get at certain famous-name places alongside Hwy 101 that shall not be mentioned here.

But the prices are fair enough, and the grilled veggie sandwiches and omelettes are as big as your proverbial head. If I'm being honest, though, it's really all about those milkshakes.

Real Cheap Sports

Category: Outdoor Gear

Here's the deal: Real Cheap Sports carries mega name-brand gear at ridiculously cheap outlet-mall kinds of prices. Run by ex-Patagonia employees, Patagonia has the biggest showing on the clothing racks, but not exclusively. Half the store is apparel for men, women and kids, while the other half has camping, backpacking, rock-climbing and other outdoor gear. Seasonal sales are killer (sign up for their email list). You won't find everything you need here, but if you're comparison shopping for a big-ticket item like a down jacket or a sleeping bag, check here first and you might save yourself $100 over what you'd pay at REI in Santa Barbara or the original Patagonia shop nearby in Ventura.

Red House BBQ

On the long drive across the desert from Bakersfield to Barstow (en route to Vegas), Tehachapi was once a foodie wasteland. Not any more! This Native American-owned barbecue house is phenomenal. I've tasted BBQ from my hometown of Chicago, all across the South and Midwest, in the hill country of Texas and beyond. But this is the real deal, and the good homecooked stuff really measures up. Order at the counter, then take a seat and wait oh, two minutes for your food to be delivered to your table. The mac 'n cheese was seriously heart-warming, and oh, that damn succulent brisket. The table kept open at the back as a photo memorial to military vets, with a fresh plate of food set on the table to appease hungry ghosts, was a nice touch.

Finders Keepers

Hands down, the best consignment & resale shop in SLO County. Lots of designer and name brands on the racks, in a full range of sizes from petite to XL. Inventory turns over rapidly, so I can drop by every 6 to 8 weeks and find completely new, seasonally inspired stock on the racks and shelves. Prices are more than fair, and the blonde shop assistant (whose name I don't know, sorry!) is genuinely helpful.
