If you live anywhere near Springfield, you'll quickly come to rely of the Uptown Market. Along the virtual ghost town that is Main Street, this is a fine example of what the neighborhood could be.
We go there about once a week and always find the food good and the service attentive. I'm a particular fan of their breakfast offerings: varied enough to be interesting, but simple enough to know what you're getting. The breakfast sandwich is a bargain. For lunch, the specials on the chalkboard are usually worth trying.
Service has always been quick and courteous, and the place is always clean. It can get a bit noisy during crowded times, but that's OK. The owners of this place do know how to run a restaurant.
On the downside, I've sometimes been disappointed to find that they close at 2 p.m. I understand you've got to watch your payroll in a place like Springfield, but I really wish they had longer hours. If this were a dinner place, we'd probably go there more often.

Friendly enough, but these folks have been trained in the art of relentless upsell. Go in for an oil change and you'll be told you need several hundred dollars worth of other work. This happens EVERY time. If you have no mechanical background, you're kind of at their mercy. Trust me: When they say you need a bunch of other repairs, say thanks and tell them you'll definitely get a second opinion.
Also, there are enough non-chain shops around Jax that you should try one of them first anyway.

My only complaint about Pinegrove Market & Deli is that it's not in my neighborhood. Figures that I only heard of it six months after we moved out of Avondale.
I had the Chicken Philly with a side of greek pasta salad. Wife had the all-veggie Victoria. Both excellent. Because we had a gift account, we also picked up some rib-eye steaks. You won't find better beef anywhere, including Montana where I come from.
I'm impressed by the friendly counter staff and the easy, no-frills vibe. Prices aren't the cheapest around, but they're still a pretty good deal. We'll definitely be back. Just wish I'd known it about it earlier.

DeLuxe Laundry and Dry Cleaners

I went with DeLuxe mostly because it looked like the parking wouldn't be a hassle. It isn't. Oak Street is just not that busy, so it's easy to get in and out of there in a hurry.
Service seems fine. Price isn't a bargain, but fair enough. Staff isn't particularly warm or cool, just doing the job. Stuff is done when they say it'll be done. If you live in Riverside, this will be a lot easier to get to than the dry cleaner on Margaret.

Mike, the owner, likes to joke around, but he knows his stuff and he's honest. Unlike some places we've tried since moving to Jax, he doesn't try to sell you on a bunch of repairs you don't need. Service is really quick and thorough. This is our go-to mechanic from now on. Especially since we now live within a few blocks of the place.

Sliders Seaside Grill

We always stop here when we get up to Fernandina Beach. It's convenient and has a pretty good location right by the beach.
The food is always adequate and sometimes really good. The service, during our last couple of stops, can be pretty slow. You can see why: There's never enough staff. Sitting outside, the bartender is also the waiter, and when it's even moderately busy you'll wait for a while to order, and then wait quite a bit longer to get your food. Sliders recently underwent a major remodel, and while it was probably long overdue, some of the ambience has been lost. It feels a bit colder, somehow.
For an appetizer, I recommend the fried pickles.

Wafaa and Mike's Mediterranean - CLOSED

Not much in the way of ambience, but the food is good and the service is friendly. A couple of guys were chopping vegetables in back when I was there, which suggests freshness -- as opposed to the boil-in-a-bag cuisine of the chain restaurants. This is important. Also, the prices are right.
This place is within walking distance of my house and I like to support good neighborhood businesses as much as possible. I'll be back.

These guys were recommended to us by a body shop in town, and we're happy with the service. Dave, one of the owners, can seem kind of brusque, but he's friendly enough and knows what he's doing. I recently had some brake work done on my wife's car, and he got it done quickly for about half the amount we've paid elsewhere.
This is a small shop, but that's reassuring. They tend to recognize you when you come in the door. Dave says they do a full range of auto repair, so I think I'll be trying B&D Automotive again.

I've only eaten here once, ordering a meatball sandwich and an order of fries. I'm reviewing it anyway because the sandwich was quite good and the people are nice. The place is small and nothing you'd call fancy.
I find service to be the biggest consideration when deciding whether to return to a place. Even if the food is 5-star, 1-star service will always keep me from going back. The folks here seem to appreciate my business and know how to smile. Because of that, Michael's Deli is a place I'll go again.

First, the web ordering works like a charm! I was a little leery of this, since it's one of those generic outsourced services and doesn't give you much feel for the actual restaurant. But the online menu is comprehensive, accurate, and even lets you specify special orders. Just to test it, I ordered a large veggie pizza and added a note to please add some pepperoni. When my two pizzas showed up, both were exactly what I expected. I added the tip to my online order, but it didn't register somehow.
Delivery was quick, and the driver was friendly. So I tipped him in cash.
The pizzas are very good. Maybe a bit too much crust around the circumference, but it's GOOD crust, so I won't quibble. Ingredients and sauce all seem fresh and tasty.
We live in Springfield, where delivery options are perhaps not as wide-ranging as other neighborhoods. We'll be doing the online ordering from Big Pete's again.
