I guess I should've looked up Don's company on Yelp before calling him out.  Much to his credit, he did show up on the schedule day to go over what he thought needed fixing.  The goal was to get an estimate on what regular maintenance should be for our complex's pool/spa.  Don seemed to know what he was talking about and we were looking forward to working with him, but as others pointed out, he doesn't seem to like to return phone calls.  Called multiple times afterwards to request the estimate and not once did he call back.  Guess money isn't money.

Nice remodel of the old Crazy Buffet.  They really revitalized the inside and made it more modern and hip.  But looks don't make up for the slow service you'll find right now during their soft opening.

I get that they offer all-you-can eat, made-to-order sushi lunch/dinner services and it can get busy.  I don't get why you only have two sushi chefs working your large sushi bar for the service.  The place probably sits at least 100+ people, but there were probably only about a quarter of their capacity at lunch.  It should've been very manageable.  They seem to have enough servers standing around waiting to help customers, but the chefs just weren't turning out the sushi fast enough.  I waited 45 minutes for my food to arrive, while my colleagues each got their orders about 15 minutes apart from one another.  And even then, they goofed up the orders several times.  I eventually had to go back to work after waiting 45 minutes for nothing.  I got up to leave was I told by one of the waiters that they wouldn't charge me (?) and that they hoped I'd understand that it's their soft opening and that they're working out the kinks.  Got a long way to go.

Whoever their manager was (I'm guessing it was the guy wearing the backward cap and Giant's jersey), I didn't see any managing going on.  The waiters/waitresses only seemed to react when food was ready to go out.  They needed to tend to the customers and check on the status of their orders.   And the fact that there was no gesture to make up for the bad experience was a disappointment as well.

Oh, and they raised their lunch price from $12.95 to $16.95 already.

Followup to after my departure, the manager came over and informed our party that they had completed all of their orders, and that they could order more, even though they had NOT brought over the last 2 orders we had submitted.  There was still no apology.  He was adamant that all the orders had been taken care of and didn't care if it hadn't.  One of my colleague's put in a final order and specifically asked for it to be done in 3 minutes.  Surprisingly, they were able to meet that demand.

Took our Toyota Sequoia in for a complete timing belt/water pump repair as it had reached 180K on the speedometer.  Spoke to Jassi over the phone and told him what I wanted to get done.  He understood and worked up a quote for the repair using either: 1)Toyota factory parts or 2) Aisin (Toyota's supplier) OEM parts.  Since the parts were basically the same without the branding and they'd still come with the same warranty, I went OEM.  *Note, unless you've done your research and know the difference between OEM and factory parts, don't settle for just any OEM parts.*

I made the appointment with Jassi, after he came back with the most reasonable and no-nonsense quote that I had gotten during my week of research.  I had previously contacted four other shops about the repair cost, but they either couldn't fit me in when I wanted it, lacked the time to give me a detailed quote, or wanted to charge me twice for labor costs.

Dropped off our SUV in the morning and had it back before closing.  Along with the first time customer discount of 10%, the bill ended up being at least $200 less than any of the other quotes that I had gotten.  The repair made so much of a difference in the driveability.  It was like a new car again.

Will definitely use Dhillon Auto Repair in the future.  Thanks Jassi!

InstaVIN is a site, like Carfax and AutoCheck, that allows you to lookup a vehicle's history for a small fee.  Depending on your needs, you can look up the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see whether a vehicle you're interested in buying, has a salvage title or check the vehicle's title history.  Unlike Carfax or AutoCheck, InstaVIN charges a low fee between $3-$7 per vehicle, to check available information from the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), governed by the US Dept. of Justice.  However, don't be fooled by the USDoJ association.  The USDoJ doesn't have any more info than what Carfax and AutoCheck can provide.  It doesn't seem to note any vehicle repairs or servicing in their records. In fact, it's been my experience that you're lucky to find at least one title record per vehicle in the NMVTIS.  At most, the vehicles that I've researched returned only 2 title listings, while Carfax or AutoCheck returned 8-15 incidents.

InstaVIN can tell you whether it's a salvaged vehicle (been in an accident), but even that info is limited to yes or no.

This is truly a case of you get what you pay for.  For about $14, you can get 3 vehicle searches, which will result in 1-2 title listings per vehicle.  It is not enough info to get a feel service/repair history of the vehicle.  I can't recommend InstaVIN at all for detailed vehicle info. Fresh mushrooms rule!  Glad they listened and are using them.  Coupled with a generous portion of Cheeze Whiz, this is by far the best cheesesteak in the area.

Wise Guys is so close in my book to be better than the Cheese Steak Shop.  I think they're one ingredient from being tops in the Cheese Steak arena locally, and that's fresh mushrooms.  Wise Guys uses the canned mushroom variety, which is just OK; fresh is definitely better.  Luckily for them, the option to have Cheese Whiz on the Cheese Steak and their generous portion of natural cut fries are huge pluses.  Their hot peppers are even hot. One size doesn't fit all though, so it'd be nice if there was a 2nd size option for the sandwiches. Overall, they make a great Cheese Steak that is worth going back again and again.

Finally had a chance to make it back for a second taste of their Xiao Long Baos and house special chow mein.  The XLB just bursts in your mouth with flavorful broth.  And the chow mein noodles were super fresh.  Not usually into thicker noodles for chow mein, but I'd convert for this type.

They also have other types of dumpling, which we sampled previously, as well as small Taiwanese-style appetizer dishes that go well with the dumplings. So glad this is so close to us if I need to get a fix.

Glass Doctor

I needed to get my windshield replaced due to several rock chips that were bothering me.  Since my insurance would cover most of the cost, I had inquired whether the Glass Doctor could give me a discount on my insurance deductible, since I know some places do that.  Sure enough, they were able to, and it didn't cost me anything more than time.  They weren't recognized by my insurance company as a recommended installer, but that only meant that I'd kinda be on my own if problems arose...which of course, did happen.

I first had them come out to my work for a mobile install.  While the original install date had changed, it was no big deal to me, since they did contact me ahead of time.  The installer, Jay, was prompt and efficient with the install.  Had me ready to go in about an hour.

While driving home, I noticed some distortion in the windshield.  There was an area of the glass which was not completely clear.  There was some type of wavy distortion that wasn't that big of deal, but it was noticeable.  I contacted the Glass Doctor the next day and told them about the issue.  The owner David, told me they'd take care of what sounded like a manufacturer's defect.  Just had to bring my car down to the shop on Sat.  OK, no problem.

Brought it down on Sat and waited for it.  Took longer than the mobile install...probably because they had something else going on before me.  Finished after 90 min of waiting around.  The top moulding around the windshield was taped down to hold it in place while the caulking dried.  The tape didn't last long as I drove on the freeway home; tape had lifted off and was flapping in the wind along with the moulding.  Got home and found that there was no caulk on the moulding.  Contacted David and Jay, who happened to live nearby my home, would come by afterwork to see what the issue was.  Jay came by and realized that not enough caulk had been applied to hold the moulding down.  With some squirts of caulking, the moulding was taped down to set in place.  It was finally done.

While it did take some extra effort on my part, the fact that it didn't cost me anything but a little free time on Sat to complete everything and that they took care of the problems without any dismissal, outweighed any negative.  I did have some concern about the replacement windshield and that is that most shops use an inexpensive aftermarket type windshield, which usually, isn't as thick as the factory installed windshield.  It still meets government codes, but just isn't as durable, which is something to consider in the future.  Oh well, next time.

Auntie April's Chicken, Waffles & Soul Food

We stopped in at Auntie April's one afternoon after noticing it driving down 3rd St several months earlier.  We had been meaning to return to the area to sample the food, but we just hadn't gotten around to it.  Luck must've been with us because we pulled right up to the front for parking.  That made it all the more easier, since we had the little kidlet with us.

At the time that we had gone, the place itself seemed a little rough around the edges.  It looked like they were trying to make the front a little loungy for people to hang out in...kinda Starbuck-ish.  The kitchen itself sits out in the open behind a long counter which seemed wasted with stuff on top of it.  Orders are taken at the end of the counter toward the back...which doesn't quite make sense.  Decorations are minimal, but then again, I'm more concerned about the food.

Perusing the menu on the wall, they had a decent breakfast menu along with some other southern dishes.  We however ordered the obligatory chicken 'n' waffles.  I was a little disappointed that (at that time) they only served wings.  But it's still chicken 'n' waffles so I'm not complaining.  The dishes came out fairly quick.  The chicken was nice and crispy with good flavor.  The waffle was almost like the Belgian variety, which is alright with me.  Compared to other chicken n waffle joints in the Bay Area, Auntie April's is up there alongside the likes of Merritt's, the old Powell's Place (have not tried the new Powell's), and Gussie's. It edges Home of C&W just for it's waffles alone.

Definitely worth heading back to sample the other offerings and expanded chicken-pieces selection.

Yelp Brunch At Tikka Benedict

What a wonderful way to spend our Sun morn with some of Yelp's finest.  A nice lil spot in the FiDi...don't walk too fast, or you might pass it by.  The small group milling around inside was my only clue (other than the sandwich board display on the sidewalk pointing across the street) that this was the place.

While I was not exactly sure what to expect food-wise, I was pleasantly surprised that I did end up tasting a majority of what was offered...with the exception of coconut juice and the nutella and banana treat.  Unfortunately, I'm one of those picky eaters that certain things just don't appeal to me.  However, I kept an open mind and tried everything else.   Fruit yogurt with granola, chocolate, and fresh fruits...who would've thought I'd be asking for 2nds.   The Tikka Benedict....mmmmmm, definitely worth ordering again!  The Tikka Panini also was tasty.

Thanks to Jessica for setting this up for us old-timers and expanding our food horizons!  And thanks to Seema and Tikka Benedict for allowing us to sample their tasty food.

Found 1st Toyota Parts online when I was looking to replace some missing parts on our newly acquired Sequoia SUV.  I found them to be one of the cheapest places to buy genuine Toyota parts...saving about 28% from local Toyota dealers; you do have to pay for shipping though, which is 10% of your order (consider it your sales tax).  Definitely worth buying from.  Orders are typically shipped fairly quickly, provided the part is in stock.  Will be ordering from again.
