Clover Food Lab

Update - 1/25/2012
Update: I've basically had everything on the Clover menu by now - I'll brave any weather to go fetch one of their amazing egg & eggplant sandwiches. Their popovers are delicious, as well as their muffins and oatmeal with seasonal fruit compote. Awesome hot cider in the winter. Awesome everything. Kendall is now saturated with amazing lunch options (though why not keep them coming!?) and I always find myself running back to Clover.

Clover has fast become the sweetheart of the food truck phenomenon on MIT's campus...and with good reason.  This small vegetarian operation in their white unmarked truck offer some of the tastiest food in the Kendall/MIT area.  For the huge crowd that amasses at lunch time they get you in and out with charm and efficiency - you don't feel rushed, and honestly you kind of feel like they care about you and your sandwich.

I stop by a few times a week for their amazing coffee - they don't deal in large pots and quick pours.  The friendly adorable staff scoops you your own personal grounds, places them in your own personal filter, and pours your very own hot water over them into your own cup.  It takes a little longer but is so worth it.  The coffee they feature is always awesome and the staff is totally knowledgeable about the flavor nuances of each one.  Quality.

I've never had any of their breakfast goods, but their popovers try to seduce me every time...someday they'll win.

Lunch at Clover is fantastic - the chickpea fritter sandwich is stuffed with hummus, cukes, carrots, pickles, cabbage, pickled onions and what I think might be a tahini sauce...and lightly fried chickpea fritters of course.  SO GOOD.  The rosemary fries are fabulous too, as well as their assorted beverages like basil or brown sugar lemonade, hibiscus iced tea...you get the idea.  Everything is made to order and made with care...and made with awesomeness.

And the prices are very good for the amount of food you get.  $5 for a fresh, healthy, amazing sandwich always sounds good to me...and $2 for my own personal cup of magical coffee.  Yes. Clover. Geniuses.

Plimoth Cinema

I'm very glad Plimoth Cinema exists. It's basically the only place to see first run (basically, they're a tiny bit later) independent films in the area, without having to trek up to Kendall.

As other reviews have said, there's only one screen but it's not a big deal. The theatre is very comfortable and super clean. There are 2 showings a day, at 4:30 and 7:00, and on Saturdays they serve beer and wine which is really nice! It's a lovely experience, definitely more relaxing than going to the local mall movie theatre to watch films in sticky seats amidst a sea of talking texting teens.

The screen is smaller than a regular theatre screen, but not by much. The sound and picture are good. The film selections sometimes cater to an older crowd - there are a few good edgier indies that did not come down here that I was wishing would. But for the most part they do a good job. Recently I've seen the latest Herzog and Von Trier films here, so I'm not really complaining.

I've been going to The Yoga Nook for three weeks now, and I've thoroughly enjoyed my experience here so far! I'm thrilled to have a beautiful yoga studio so close to my home in Kingston - living up in Boston I used to have tons of yoga studios to choose from but since moving south 3 years ago, it's been hard to find one that's convenient and has what I'm looking for, to keep up a consistent practice.

The Yoga Nook has *exactly* what I'm looking for - great, affordable classes taught by excellent, caring instructors in a beautiful, spotless, toasty warm studio. They specialize mostly in power yoga, but at a variety of different levels so if you don't want to "flow" as quickly, there are slower classes to focus more on posture and stretching. Both types of class are great - the two instructors I've encountered, Lynn and Andrea, are amazing.

The only thing I'd change about The Yoga Nook is that I'd love to see more classes offered on weekdays at 7:00pm or later. As a commuter it's impossible for me to make the 6:00pm classes and I'd love to have more classes to choose from on weeknights! Otherwise The Yoga Nook is my new yoga home and I'm so thankful!

Sweet minty chocolatey caramel smell in Central Square, I love you. Combined with the light sugary snow today it was almost as if it was actually raining magical candy.

Dr. John Lee is great - I've been seeing him for a few years. He is thorough and friendly, and explains everything really well. You can tell he loves his job, and cares a lot about his patients.

The store is clean and neat as a pin, and the front staff are extremely helpful when it comes to picking out glasses - they have a great, unique selection. I always get compliments on the cool frames I've picked out there over the years. They're not pushy at all - they don't try to sell you on the most expensive frames they can find, which is really refreshing. They tell you the truth about what looks great on your face. And they don't try to scare you into getting eyeglass insurance or the fanciest lenses - much appreciated!

Alright alright. I'm on the bandwagon. You may have to wait almost an hour to get into Drink sometimes, but my last few experiences have been spectacular. I even went for my birthday - and I do not take birthday celebrations lightly, especially my own. The service has been outstanding on my last few visits and the drinks, perfect and exciting. Yay Drink! You've won my picky, snotty little heart.

I really really want to like Drink.  I've been 4 or 5 times now, and had varying experiences, all the way from completely mind-blowingly awesome to super disappointing.  It's that kind of inconsistency that makes me grumpy.

Let me preface this by saying that I love the concept, and the whole feel of Drink.  All glowy and clandestine, situated in a basement on Congress street...just walking in (when you actually can and don't have to wait in a crazy line) makes you feel like you're in on something awesome and secret...a beautifully glam speakeasy, if you will.

And the fact that they have no set drink menu, and the talented barkeep will make you whatever you're in the mood for, is a cool concept as well.  Then you can remember your special drink and ask for it again, and like some kind of cocktail insider.  Whenever I go in a group the inevitable "Have you had the Green Fairy Gimlet?  Have you had the Blind Tiger?  The Tennessee Sweetheart?" conversation arises.  All of those drinks are fake btw, but you get the idea.

On my best nights here I've had awesome new drinks introduced to me, great engaging service and left with a smile on my face, scrambling to find my wits and balance.  On my "eh" nights I've had drinks like the Seelbach or Negroni suggested to me, which I could have at any of 50 restaurants across Boston, without waiting in line and being packed in like a sardine.  Maybe I'm expecting too much but whatever.  Someone constantly referred to as a mixologist should give me more interesting suggestions than that.

My latest experience here was pretty disappointing.  We got right in, which was nice, and I was all excited to have an English Channel, which I had enjoyed immensely on my last visit - champagne and Pimm's Cup with a float of yellow chartreuse and a twist of lemon.  A drink practically designed for me.  When I ordered the bartender was right on, yes, knew what I wanted.  What I got instead was basically a glass of yellow chartreuse, with small amounts of the other ingredients present, but...my entire party turned their noses up at it as they passed it around, advising me not to drink the whole thing unless I was aiming to black out.  And I quite enjoy chartreuse as a component and even sometimes alone (a trace amount in a snifter)...but this was over the top.

I totally own that part of my disappointment might have been remedied by just asking for a new drink, but I've gotten such a snotty attitude from some of the bartenders there that I wasn't in the mood to even suggest that they made my drink wrong.  So I only drank half.  Boo.

Anyway, I definitely wouldn't discourage you from trying Drink.  Obviously a lot of people love it.  Having lots of bartenders working there, and an infinite amount of customers and special drinks that are being designed for them is likely a gigantic challenge.  That recipe has just unfortunately resulted in some disappointing inconsistency for me.

Zip's Dining Car

I've been dating, betrothed to, and now married to a boy from this area for oh, 11 years now, and I only went to Zip's for the first time this weekend. As mentioned in other reviews, the giant "EAT" sign assured me this place would be 100% diner-tastic before I even set foot inside.

And the promise of the sign was totally delivered - this the epitome of classic diner. It's a greasy spoon but definitely does not leave you smelling like bacon when you leave, which I was actually quite surprised by. My party of 5 sampled the BLT, tuna club, pot roast sandwich and some good old eggs and toast, fries, onion rings...you get it. And it was all great - no complaints here. Super friendly quick service too, and super cheap.

EVOO

I've been to EVOO several times, both when it was in Somerville and now in its new incarnation in Kendall. I like what they do. Their menu changes often with an emphasis on locally sourced seasonal food - I mean who wouldn't like that? It's practically essential these days if you want your fine dining establishment to fly.

My latest experience here was decent food/drink-wise, and the service was very friendly and unfortunately apologetic, because it was also quite slow. We sat at the bar on a Saturday night - when we arrived a bit before 8:00 without a res we were told we couldn't be seated in the dining room until 9:00. That's fair - we opted to sit at the bar that is both for EVOO and its sister restaurant, Za. I actually preferred that because EVOO itself seems a bit stuffy. But this nice no man's land between the two restaurants seemed right. Cozy, modern blah blah blah - just my kind of mise en scene as I express in so many reviews.

The special bar menu offers around 10 local cheeses for $5 that come with homemade bread. Nice. We started our meal with a cloumage from MA - buttery perfection. Great bread too. Enjoyable start paired with our rye drinks (which were fine but forgettable). For the rest of the meal we ordered of EVOO's menu. Our next course of clams in a paella-like preparation came along at the appropriate time - so far so good. But, another round of cocktails later our entrees STILL hadn't come. We waited almost an hour. And though the food we eventually got was good, and we were offered a free round and the hostess bent over backward to make sure we were happy, it was still kind of lame. Sometimes after you've watched a long-ass Lars Von Trier film at Kendall you don't want another free round - you just want to eat your dinner in a timely fashion and head home. Or something.

Anyway our entrees were fine - duck for him, bit of a small portion, and the veggie entree for me, a pumpkin-like squash filled with all manner of fall time produce and cavatelli, with a sweet cream on top that made the whole thing almost too desserty.

Overall we had a pleasant experience, if rather long. I applaud them for trying to right the temporal wrongs at hand, but it honestly didn't make me want to come running back, with all the other great choices popping up in Kendall.

Island Creek Oyster Bar

Finally made it to the ICOB - probably a long overdue visit since I am from the land of oysters and IC are definitely my favorite. I'm sure they're delicious here too, but being that I've eaten my fair share of these and other local oysters, I decided to focus on other parts of the menu during my visit.

My friend and I sat at the bar, which was definitely preferable. I'd do it again. The rest of the restaurant was your average Boston upscale kind of soulless (sooooorry) dining room, but the bar area was cozy and just seemed like the best place to be. Bartenders were super nice, and definitely gave us a fine dining experience - and easy on the eyes, always key.

We loved the expertly mixed cocktails we received - the Italiano and the McCarthy's Crossing (i think?). Super nice. Enjoyed some generous pours of Vermentino too - yum yum. Apps were lovely - tuna tartare served with taro chips, and no shell mussels in lemongrass chile broth. Both spot on, save for a few sandy muscles. Bountiful bread with seasoned butter too.

We split an entree which they very kindly plated on two plates for us - classy, thank you! It was a gorgeous perfectly cooked piece of lightly crusted cod with celery root puree and cranberry beans. The fish was amazing, but the cranberry beans were underdone and the celery puree was scarce...which was sad because it was delicious.

We skipped dessert because nothing really wooed us, but enjoyed some coffee which was perfectly fine. Our whole experience here at ICOB was super pleasant and the seafood was definitely super fresh. It's a bit pricey, but they know what they're doing. I think it just needed a bit more something to make it a wow for me - maybe having some of those wonderful oysters would have made a difference.

Salon Luna

I love Salon Luna. I've been coming here for years, ever since my most favorite stylist ever ever, Tracey V, left Judy Jetson and started here instead.

Though Tracey is the sparkly, glittery central point of awesomeness in my Salon Luna experience, everything/everyone else is fantastic too. The salon itself is clean and comfortable, and very cute, without even a hint of snottiness. The prices are very fair for the quality, great products, great communication, great everything. I always thoroughly enjoy the 2 hours (cut and high/low lights) I spend here every three months or so, and leave feeling pretty damn cute, without fail. I would highly recommend Salon Luna to anyone who wants to look fabulous.
