The coffee and OJ were fresh and the wait staff oh so colorful. Although Vics is not terribly close to where I live or work, it is good to know that such a well loved place thrives in Tewkesbury.
The staff is enthusiastic and nice. The place has the feeling of a local hangout. It is a nice addition to downtown Lowell's evolving culinary scene.
Lets start with the spinach salad....a huge pile of fresh pac spinach, sprinkled with onion and piles high with cheese. Its a pile of spinach, not a salad!
I was looking forward to my pizza (eggplant), especially one coming from a wood fired oven. Unfortunately, it was loaded with large pieces of raw garlic. Finally, my partner had the chicken caccitore. Bland as bland can be with a watery flavorless tomato sauce.
Don't know if it was an off night in the kitchen but it is hard to think about giving them a second chance. The inside of my mouth still feels assaulted by the raw garlic (the gift that keeps on giving). Ending on the plus side....service was very fast and efficient and the bread was quite good. Still, it doesn't make up for the food.

Was there for lunch; the menu is short and sweet, allowing them to concentrate on a small number of things and do it quite well. My dining partner had a burger with blue cheese and declared it wonderful. I had their newly added Greek burger, basically an seasoned lamb patty. I love lamb and enjoyed their treatment, nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked. The fries are house made and good (although a bit more limp than I would have liked). The only disappointment was a request for one of the flavored mayos on the burger; it was forgotten by the kitchen staff.
Nice to have a place that is different from the other cafes downtown. Look forward to returning with co-workers and trying some of their beef offerings!
Namaste.
The garden is also iconic to mid-20th century landscape design. Although a bit rough around some of its edges, it was also superb. The owners of the property, the Trustees for Reservations, is doing a fine job of upkeep.
I look forward to returning to Naumkeag when we can experience the garden in all of its Spring glory.

For the diner crowd, this is a great place! Good coffee, quality ingredients, and a great value. The old dining car is in excellent condition and the waitresses are color coordinated with the green interior. Perfection!
The omelets we had were nicely done. All too often, omelets are left on the grill far too long! Only complaint...some of the potatoes were barley done. Have not been for lunch, but will go back for breakfast! One final word on the neighborhood....does n't hide or gussy up its working class roots. This may not be Rodeo Drive, but the old 'hood is just fine.
It is a lunch counter more than a diner but certainly carries on the spirit of a diner. The prices are rock bottom cheap, especially for a place like the Berkshires. The food is simple but good. I had an eggplant parmigiana grinder.....very good. Their coffee was good, too. My partner had a grilled ham and cheese cheese sandwich. Also very simple and not to his liking.
In the more populated areas of the nation, places like Joe's feel like they are are the endangered species list. It is wonderful to go, share, and enjoy a slice of small town life.
