Applebee's

Category: American (Traditional)

1.0 star rating

This Applebee's has the worst service in the 951 area code.

We were seated by a very nice, polite hostess ... then were proceeded to be ignored by the wait staff for 5 minutes. We had to *ask* for menus! Yet, the server, who was Latina, immediately served the group of Latinos who came in several minutes after us. We found this very conspicuous considering we are made up of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Indian people.

After finally getting menus, the server still didn't swing by to take our order! We waited another 5 minutes before the hostess happened to walk by and noticed we hadn't been helped. She apologized profusely and said she would get someone to help us. It took almost 15 minutes before someone took our order!

Needless to say this was the start of a horrible dining experience. The food took forever to come out, we never received items like napkins we asked for, and the server never checked in on us after we received the food.

This doesn't even take into account the only-average-tasting food for fairly above-average prices. We will never return to this location again, and maybe never to another Applebee's.

If I could have given this place a ZERO out of 5 stars, I would have.

Amy Bridal Shop

BEWARE: After visiting more than 6 shops, Amy Bridal Shop is by far the worst! Avoid at all costs!

We have been shopping for weeks trying to find the right wedding dress, and we thought we'd found the perfect dress at Amy Bridal Shop. One problem: The worker there wouldn't let my fiancee try on the dress!!! What?!?

She said she didn't want to get the dress dirty (as if we were some homeless bums who just came off the street!), and insisted that we just write down the dress number, find it at another shop, try it on, then come back to her and buy it. What madness is this? What idiocy? That would be like going to Car Dealership A and being told that we can't test drive the vehicle, but that we should go to Car Dealership B, test drive a car there, then come back to Car Dealership A to make the purchase.

No amount of logic would work on this shop, so we immediately left, disgusted with their poor customer service and moronic policies. We told her she had lost a substantial amount of business.

Don't be fooled by their low prices -- they are low for a reason!

Rutabegorz Tustin Restaurant

This place is a fun little restaurant with a cozy atmosphere, great service, and healthy, tasty food.

FOOD: It has a large menu of healthy but delicious dishes, complete with a vegetarian section. I had the soup-and-sandwich combo of a half salami sandwich with cockie leeky soup (yes, that's really a soup, you perverts!). Surprisingly, the dish came with a pickle, crackers, carrot, and pineapple, with the mayo and honey mustard on the side. Every element served only to make the soup and sandwich even more tasty, and was way more food then expected. The squaw bread and cheddar cheese in the sandwich was the perfect yin-yang balance while the salmon chunks in the soup provided a new delicious experience. (My fianceé's seafood enchiladas were muy delicioso too!)

SERVICE: The staff was super efficient, extra helpful, and most of all really friendly. Tipping our server 17% wasn't a hard choice to make.

DECOR: Located in Old Town Tustin, this eatery matches the vintage feel of its neighborhood. Think grandma's kitchen meets hippie cafeteria -- but cooler.

PRICE: Though you'll be hard pressed to find an entree cheaper than $9, almost all the dishes will be well worth the price. Great taste and less fat and preservatives than most sit-down restaurants.

JT Schmid's Restaurant & Brewery

Categories: Breweries, American (Traditional)

3.0 star rating

I would give JT Schmid a 4 out of 5 but it will have to settle for a 3, based largely on the fact that the prices are pretty steep for the quality of food.

Being a restaurant and brewery, JT Schmid will satisfy you more if you're looking for a place to get some eats with your drinks, rather than the other way around.  It has all sorts of beers, wines, and alcoholic beverages. However, the quality of food is not as strong.

The food menu is diverse and large, but hit and miss.

For example, my prime rib was surprisingly chewy, and without the horseradish, it would have been a wasted $30 or so. Meanwhile, the sweet potato fries are unbelievably addictive.

This place is best enjoyed with a large group of friends who want to pound a few beers in a classy setting and spend some serious cash on food, as opposed to some low-rent sports bar.

Maki-Zushi

Maki-Zushi serves up some of the most authentic Japanese sushi this side of the Pacific, and I've been to Japan so I don't often say this so generously.

From traditional tuna sushi to modern American-fusion rolls, Maki-Zushi serves up some of the most tasty Japanese seafood that I've found in Orange County. Its salmon sashimi is fresh with just the perfect texture and the sukiyaki beef was spot-on genuine.

The prices are decent -- not cheap, but not an arm-and-leg rip-off. And the service is excellent.

It's a smaller restaurant, so it's more ideal for dinners for couples or a small group of friends.

Citrus Cafe

Despite the decent food and the polite wait staff, I left a little disappointed.

The Food: Though there was a lot per plate, the quality of the food was hit and missed, depending on the dish.

The Service: Our server was very nice and polite, but it took her nearly 10 minutes to take our order. Then it took another 20-25 minutes before we received our meal. Then afterward, she only visited our table after we flagged her down. I liked her, but she wasn't very attentive or fast.

The Price: This sealed the deal for a negative review. For the average quality of the food and the speed of the service (or lack thereof), Citrus Cafe is way too pricey. Expect to pay about $20 for $10 service.

The Rib Trader

Category: Barbeque

4.0 star rating

At first glance, The Rib Trader looks like a snap shot of your grandmother's favorite hangout from the early 1980s. I didn't have high hopes upon entering and only went here because I had a coupon.

But I'm sure glad I stayed.

Naturally, the ribs are good. I personally make better ribs, but this is probably some of the better ribs I've had at a restaurant: tasty, not too chewy, and perfectly seasoned. Plus, the portions of food are humongous. My plate alone could easily feed two people -- maybe even two adults and a small child.

The wait staff was stellar: polite, courtesy, attentive and fast.

Overall, a great time with good food for a fair price.

Denny's

Categories: Diners, Breakfast & Brunch

Let's be honest: Nobody goes to Denny's for the food.

Denny's is the midnight weigh station for drunken college kids with the munchies, hungry clubbers after last call, and truckers during a stop on a cross-country haul. So I'm not even going to review the food as you know you're going to get what you expect: greasy, unhealthy American food that tastes OK to sober people and delicious to the non-sober folks.

But I had to review this Denny's in particular because the service has been bad on virtually every occasion I've been there. That's not to say the employees weren't pleasant, but they are incompetent. Customer service needs some serious improving at this particular location.

The last time I was there, the hostess told us to sit where we pleased, so we did...and nobody came to take our order after we waited for almost 10 minutes! Every time we tried to get a server's attention, they either looked right passed us or were too busy chatting in the kitchen. We ended up just walking out...and nobody noticed.

During other visits, it took them either forever to take our order, they would forget something we asked, or we would have to wait extraordinarily long before we'd get our food.

Have not returned in a year and will not return ever again. By the way, there's a Denny's up the freeway, at Imperial Highway and the 57, that has superior service three fold.

Panera Bread

Categories: Bakeries, Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches

3.0 star rating

Panera Bread is one of those bakeries where what's good is really good, and what's not so good is actually quite sucky.

The menu is actually more more diverse than most bakeries of this type, but the problem is the price. A sandwich is about $2 too expensive for the size that you get and the coffees are 7-Eleven quality at Starbucks prices. The green tea is syrupy and doesn't taste like tea.

But what I do like, I like quite thoroughly. The turkey sandwiches are tasty and relatively healthy and the soups are hearty. The service is usually excellent.

I also like that it's a casual sit-down restaurant: more classy than a  fast-food joint but not quite a regular restaurant setting where you have to order from a server or pay a tip. Just a nice place to come and relax if you need to study, hang out with friends, or grab a quick meal.

Overall, though, there's more good than bad, so it deserves a 3 out of 5.

The Cellar

Talk about hidden gem!

I didn't even know this place existed until I did a search online for romantic restaurants in Orange County. This one was in the Top 10 of almost every list I read -- and for good reason.

Tucked away underground in the Villa Del Sol in Downtown Fullerton, The Cellar looks kinda scary at first but it's actually quite romantic. Low lighting, beautiful table settings, interior design by the folks who worked at Disneyland -- everything to set the mood with your loved one.

Though it is a little pricey, you definitely get what you pay for. The menu is top notch and the food tastes delicious. Plus, the service is outstanding. Because my girlfriend and I were celebrating our 3rd anniversary, the server actually gave us complimentary champagne and extra care and attention.
