Grant's Philly Cheese Steaks

Category: Sandwiches
Neighborhoods: Northeast Portland, Wilkes

5.0 star rating
2/10/2009
I'm in complete agreement with the other reviewers here. I lived in Philly and I know how good bread, steak and cheese can be together.

First off, Grant's steaks are big--they use a 1/4 pound of steak on the half order and 1/2 pound of steak on the full sandwich. The cheese is perfectly melted. But the magic is in the bread. Great steak and perfectly melted provolone don't cut it without the perfect roll. Grant's imports their rolls from Amoroso Baking in Philly; thus delivering the combination of ingredients necessary to say things like "best damn cheesesteak west of such and such street." It's also why one is happy to drive way out NE Sandy Blvd. for this authentic experience.

Jim & Patty's Coffee

Jim and Patty's is the best. They kindly serve great coffee, great homemade pastries and great biscuits and gravy. Plus, this coffee shop truly operates as a community center--a gathering place, where people come to drink coffee, talk with friends, conduct meetings and work on their laptops. There's a cheerfulness in the air and certain inner calm, even when it's busy and loud.

Jim and Patty's is outstanding in many areas, but to give this quick review some focus, let's look at their mochas. They have a whole line of mocha options like the Adult Mocha (with bittersweet chocolate), the Soviet Mocha (with sour cream), the Famous Mocha Borgia (with a slice of orange), the Habanero Mocha (with the world's hottest pepper) and the Loco Mocha (with cinnamon and spice). I'm hooked on the 8 oz. 4-shot Rice Dream Mocha Borgia. It's satisfaction in a cup.

I love the feel of  the old time neighborhood bar, but the patty melt I ordered had too many onions on it and the cheese was too runny. I like my cheese to adhere to the meat and bread, not my hands. As for the fries, forget about it. They were limp, not crispy, and nothing annoys me more about fries.

The food came out quick, but it took forever to pay. They had one server for an entire restaurant of lunchtime patrons. Meanwhile the "manager" went around talking about the Trailblazers and hanging up pennants in an already pennant-rich environment. I get that the place has tradition, but you can't rest on that, you have to serve the needs of your customers.

My mom and I ventured up from Marco to this subtle strip mall location in Naples, and it was well worth the effort.

Once you enter the place, prepare to be transformed by the stylish submarine-themed decor, attentive servers and menu that infuses South Florida freshness with Indian and Japanese treatments.

My mom and I ordered the following dishes:

MACADAMIA NUT ENCRUSTED MAHI-MAHI
papaya- rum butter sauce, sweet potato gratin coconut milk green beans, grilled pineapple salsa

VOLCANO YELLOWTAIL SNAPPER
grilled filet topped with a melting Asian aioli, natural sauce, wok vegetables, jasmine rice

My snapper was terrific. It's basically a curry dish, and it was one to treasure. I also really enjoyed my salad with miso dressing and the pear and walnut bread pudding for dessert.

USS Nemo is a great place to eat. I'll be back for more.

La Sirenita has the best fish tacos I've tasted outside of San Diego, where I was introduced to the concept many years ago. The other tacos we ordered were also good, but not as good. So. if it's fish tacos you seek and you're in NE Portland, this place is the answer.

Now this is a coffee house! In Portland, where there's coffee on every corner, it pays to stand out. One does so by having zero attitude, yummy pastries, killer coffee and an inviting atmosphere. Thnakfully for the residents of Concordia, and those willing to boot scoot up to Killingsworth, Extracto is firing on all cylinders.

Nicest Marriott evah! And I've stayed at a ton of this chain's properties around the nation. The building has touches of prairie style architecture throughout, a good restaurant and bar, a nice back patio with river frontage and best of all, a reading room full of books from people who taught or attended Iowa Writer's Workshop. In other words, books by Jane Smiley, Kurt Vonnegut, John Cheever, and the like--all for easy check out by guests. My family also used this room as a gathering place, since it's adorned with nice couches and chairs, and not used by many guests.

Community Appliances

This small family business knows what customer service is all about. Better yet, they deliver it to the community. We walked in to their shop this morning and paid $309 for a nice looking Kenmore washer and dryer set. By 2:00 pm it was delivered, connected and working, thanks to the efforts made by the Community Appliances crew. Turns out we didn't have the part we needed that connects the dryer to the exhaust vent. I thought a trip to Home Depot was going to be needed, but no, they had the part in the truck and simply gave it to us. Then, while hooking up the washer, the man said, "I don't like these hoses." He went to the truck and came back with new ones, again, for no charge. This is how you win customers' loyalty and spark word of mouth. It's textbook.

Pizza DOC

We've had nothing short of excellent food at this unassuming Italian place in Lincoln Square.

Last Saturday night we had a great time with friends, drinking wine, talking loudly and eating arugula salad, celery and radichio salad, pine crusted salmon, spaghetti with pancetta, chicken rollitini, veal saltimboca, etc. Someday, I'd like to try their wood fired pizza.

BTW, Denominazione di origine controllata (D.O.C.) is an Italian quality assurance label for food and wine.

Pizza D.O.C. lives up to its name.
