Improv Boston Theatre

Amazing!  I can't think of many things that are more fun to do in Boston on a weekend night if there aren't any good shows going on!  I was here last Friday for "Friday Night Face-off" where two comedy troupes battle it out to the comedic death!  It was a blast and best of all, it was ridiculously funny.  I have no idea how these people can come up with some of these hilarious one-liners while on the spot like that.  Definitely a fun skill to watch!  This place is perfect for a night out with friends, a date, or a party.

There's a nice entrance area when you walk where people can mingle before the shows starts.  There's also a bar where you can buy beer and wine.  This place is a lots and it's only 15 bucks for a night of awesome comedy.  I'll definitely be back!

The Cheesecake Factory

Category: American (New)

3 star rating
 2/7/2010
The menu at the Cheesecake Factory is an extensive list of many different food offerings and somehow they manage to make every dish respectable.  I've eaten here a few times and while I can say the food has been good, I don't think they have one signature dish that really stands out from the rest (the cheesecake doesn't count).  If you're feeling the "I'm and American" attitude then this place is perfect because the servings are absolutely and utterly massive.  You'll have enough food for dinner and lunch for the rest of the week.

The problem with the Cheesecake Factory is that the waitstaff is unable to keep up with the popularity of the place.  This isn't because they're less efficient than other restaurant staff but because the sheer volume of people that frequent this place on any evening is enough to overwhelm even the most seasoned waiter.  For this reason the service is unfortunately sub-par.

Golden Temple

Categories: Chinese, Bars, Dance Clubs

4 star rating

Ok so when my friends told me that we were going to a dance party at a chinese food restaurant I was immediately skeptic but I must say that this place was fun.  The ambience was Tarantino-esque and I was waiting for ninja warriors to start flying out of the walls at any second.  I can't say much for the food because I haven't eaten here but the dance/bar part of the restaurant is pretty great.  The crowd wasn't the typical dance club type which was nice.  It was mostly just a bunch of mid-twenty somethings and young thirty-somethings having a good time and dancing to old Michael Jackson tunes.
The beer selection was respectable and my Sam Adams was served in a swanky flute glass.  There were also a bunch of scorpion bowls going around which looked interesting.  Overall I was pleasantly surprised by the radness of Golden Temple and I'll most likely be back if my friends can get me drunk enough again to get on a dance floor.

CitySide Bar and Grille

Categories: Restaurants, Karaoke

3 star rating

City Side is in some ways a clone of every other sports bar you have ever been to.  If it involves a ball, it'll be on one of the 9474298927 televisions mounted to the walls.  The beer selection is pretty standard and the food is the usual bar faire.  That being said, CIty Side is far cleaner than most sports bars I've been to around the city.  The staff does a good job at keeping the bars presentable and the table set-ups ready for guests.

Another key ingredient that helps to make CIty Side a bit different is that they have a patio off the upstairs room.  There are no televisions out there and the BC drunks tend to stay inside close to the taps.  This makes CIty Side a decent place to check out on a summer or spring evening.  Overall the place is ok and probably the best options for drinks in Cleveland Circle.

Publick House Provisions

Categories: Beer, Wine & Spirits, Cheese Shops

4 star rating

Publick House Provisions is an excellent shop to get unique craft beers.  They have an excellent selection of Dogfish Head and Rogue beers which may be hard to find in some other stores.  They also have an impressive selection of small Massachusetts brews such as beers from Nantucket Brewery and Wachusett Brewery.  It's definitely nice to see an establishment supporting the locals.

The store itself is very well organized and the beers appear to be ordered by country of origin.  It was also nice that on the shelves they had Beer Advocate ratings for all of the beers that they sell.  That gives you an idea of what others thought of the beers.

It should be mentioned though that this place is extremely expensive.  Chances are you can find some of their more common selections for cheaper prices at other liquor stores.  But if you want to find a delicious, rare craft beer try Publick House Provisions first.

Apple Store

This place was just amazing.  I've finally decided that owning and using a PC was having a negative effect on my sanity (error messages and viruses ahhhh!) so I made the decision to buy  a Mac.  The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the organization.  All of their computer models are set up in user friendly displays for prospective customers to take the computers for a test drive.  Because of the organization, the three story store was easy to navigate.

I was immediately greeted by a customer service rep and he helped to answer all of my Mac-noob questions.  He literally walked me through all the necessary steps of switching from PC to Mac.  He also gave me a quick tutorial of Logic Express to get my music/creative fix.  I was so impressed with how helpful and friendly the sales staff was.  Even if you're not in the market for a Mac this is a fun place to stop by and see what all the fuss is about.

Mary Ann's

Category: Nightlife

4 star rating

As far as dive bars go, this place is quality!!!  Busch Light on tap for $1.75, PBR in the bottle, weird mirrors lining the walls, and faux stained glass on the ceiling.  Quality!  They also have an old school basketball shooting game in the corner and a punching bag game to test your whiskey muscles.  The jukebox is full of old Journey and Foreigner tunes.  Again, quality!

I was in here on a weekday and it was pretty tame but I've heard it can get rather rowdy on the weekends with drunk BC students.  Not exactly my scene but if you're into checking out a fun dive and maybe having a cheap beer and a good laugh you should try Mary Ann's.

I'm not much of a pizza connoisseur but I will say that this pizza was pretty good, average, and ok.  I had the Za-Za pizza and it included tomatoes, garlic cloves, and capers.  It was interesting having capers on a pizza and that was definitely the highlight of the dish.  I remember asking my roommate, "Wait is there cheese on this pizza?"  If there was any I couldn't find it or taste it.  Either way the pizza was alright and at least I didn't have to go out into the snowstorm to get food.  The delivery was super fast so I guess that has to count for something.

Kupel's Bakery

The other morning I woke up with a raging hangover.  I stumbled into the kitchen and much to my dismay, I was out of coffee!  So of course I was in panic mode when I remembered, "Hey isn't there a little bakery at the end of the street?"  I strapped on my boots and warmest winter clothes then stepped out into the January cold in hopes that the imagined bakery at the end of the street existed and had coffee.  And there it was...Kupel's

Yes, they had coffee and it was delicious.  They also had tasty bagels and quality customer service.  All of this made my headache and frozen limbs seem ok.

Yelp Elite Event @ Teatro

Yet another amazing Yelp event!  Teatro was definitely a cool space with a classy wine bar feel to it.  It was nice that the open bar included beer for non-liquor people AND they even had delicious vegetarian friendly food going around!  I even got to have my caricature drawn with a Tyrannosaurus Rex theme!  Now if that doesn't make for an awesome evening then I don't know what does.  Thanks Leighann for another awesome event!
