Santa Monica Stairs

So we get there and it's the weekend and naturally there are a lot of people there. These were hardcore people! Some were like froggy jumping up the stairs 3 steps at a time, some were going down backwards 2 steps at a time, some were just traipsing up and down like it was nothing. So here I am, going down like an old lady -- I have a bad knee and going down hurts a lot more than going up -- but the first time down was okay. I took a short break -- about a minute -- and then went up. I did the first section and the middle section and then had to catchy breath. SHIT! Three times a week at the gym never prepared me for this! I rested a few minutes, stretched out my bad knee and then proceeded up the last segment..... and here was where the bad news began......
This stretch is the longest and I made the mistake of going up and then looking up -- DON'T DO THAT! You will see a never ending flight of steps and all of a sudden, my body told me 'you can't do it lame-ass, there are too many steps ahead'. I continued up and felt myself getting losing my breath and of course stupid me, I looked up again!!!
By the time I got to the top I had to drink my water and rested about 3 mins and then I tried to go down. OMG, my knees were like jello. WTF! I i do a lot of cardio at the gym, mind you, not stairs because of my bad knee, but OMFG, I couldn't go down the freaking stairs! I made it 3 steps down and then I headed up again and continued stretching my knees until I was ready to head down.
Second time down was more excruciating than the first. My knee was seriously hurting. I then made my way back up this time making sure to keep my eyes fixated on the step ahead and NOT look up! It really made a difference. So I made it up and down twice! That's it. My BFF and her bf did it 9x. Fuck me! Fuck them! Maybe next time I might attempt it 3x but only if someone drives me down so I can walk up!

There are cute environmentally friendly baby stuff, even onesies! Apart from that there are products for your pets as well.
Everything in here helps you lead a greener life -- I like the shopping bags they have which roll up to a small thing you can carry in your purse, they're Envirosax!! Excellent idea!

Santa Monica Farmers Market - Sunday

Our faves are the bread stands -- the Breadman for one, I love their bite-sized pretzels, sourdough bread and the walnut raisin bread. The other bread stand I like (can't remember the name) but they have a delicious jalapeno and cheese pretzel there.
The prices are slightly more expensive than the Irvine Farmers Market which I go to on a regular basis, but the variety is also a lot wider here (except for the Asian vegetables, there is only one stand here).
I've also had the bratwurst here -- you get the bratwurst with all the toppings including sauerkraut and onions and you also get homemade lemonade for the low price of $5.
The funniest thing here is that you can valet your bicycle here!!

All seven of us girls chose the Traditional version which included a pot of tea of your choice -- and there is a huge selection to choose from -- 6 finger sandwiches, 2 scones and 3 pastries. From the menu there are 6 types of savory sandwiches, 2 types of scones (traditional/apple spice) and a pretty big array of pastries and sweets including pear pannacotta, kalamansi meringue tart, chocolate and regular eclairs, pound cake, and more.
My tea selection was their house special -- orange pomegranate which was a rooiboos tea with various herbal infusions.
The delicate morsels were served on a 3-tiered tray but there was definitely a lot more sweet items than savory items. It was a huge bummer that you can't select what you wanted in terms of mixing and matching -- most of us preferred the savory items more. On top of that, they don't allow you to pick the sweet items you want, but instead, they just bring whatever the chef chooses to give you. I didn't like that idea at all. The best part was the scones, when served straight from the oven and served with Deveonshire cream (too bad they didn't have clotted cream), strawberry jam and lemon curd.
Just FYI, the staff will bring out more sweet selections when you ask, however, when you want extra sandwiches, they charge you for it.
Since it was a girl's birthday, when we were done, they brought out a chocolate ganache cake for our friend -- which was a lovely gesture -- and the harpist (yes they have the harpist) played "Happy Birthday" on her harp while we sang.
This is an excellent place for a girls' get-together. The room itself isn't crowded -- very nicely spaced out -- so it feels relaxing.
I would definitely come back again when the chance permits, but I definitely would like savory items rather than sweet, that's for sure. The staff were really accommodating with our photo taking requests -- yeah and it was a lot too -- so that was a plus!

A friend of our's stayed at this hotel so we all went to hang with her in the room. The hotel itself had that boutique feel to it, small lobby and the corridors are a bit confusing -- kind of maze-like in design.
When we finally got to her room, I thought the room itself was kinda blah, but the bathroom was awesome! I mean the bathroom was almost as big as the room! There is a balcony also where all the smokers huddled to curb their addiction.
The bed is rather comfortable, plush and is comparable to the Heavenly Bed. I only laid on it for a period of time, not sleep over night so I couldn't tell you how that would feel, but it was really comfy for the short time I occupied it -- didn't want to get up. The comforter and linen were also very luxurious... but then again for the price, you'd hope so!!
When you finally leave the hotel, the guys at the door holds both doors open for you -- makes you feel a bit like a celebrity really!!
yellowtail sushi -- 2 pieces of nigiri sushi with very flavorful yellowtail! Thi was my first piece so I was quite impressed!
salmon skin hand roll -- freshly cooked up salmon skin rolled into crispy nori..... very nice!
freshwater eel -- meh this wasn't the best for me.... too much unagi sweet sauce. I was expecting how Murasaki does it, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with some lemon and sea salt. I think the sauce killed it for me
red snapper -- absolutely awesome! this was something I would've liked to have seconds of but unfortunately, you can't repeat your order for this special sushi lunch menu items
spicy yellowtail handroll -- nice although it didn't stand out in any way... just your typical spicy handroll
They were extremely busy today. Melissa, who is a regular said she'd never seen this many people before.
I will definitely come back here again! I can't believe I've never been before! Thanks Melissa for spending my birthday with me and also, for lunch!
The best part of it was the freshly squeezed OJ -- $3.50 for a 16oz cup.
2.5 stars!

This place is really deceiving because it is also known as Tamale Queen. From the outside you will see Reyna's and then next to it, Donuts and Tamales. You think they are 2 separate businesses but in fact, they're the same. They're listed as Reyna's Mexican Grill, yet when you pay, the receipt says Tamale Queen. Go figure.
I've seen this place so many times driving past and today I was in the area so I wanted to go and try the tamales. I ordered the jalepeno and cheese one. Was tasty although the queso used was not the traditional white kind. The salas they give you are also good... the spicy green one had a good kick to it. I also bought 10 various frozen tamales to bring home to enjoy later.
The restaurant itself also serves up regular Mexican fare although I didn't try any. Hard to miss if you're not looking for it. Located in a small strip mall.
Again I felt that the service was impeccable. The food was not as good as the first visit. It wasn't very busy at lunch time either which was surprising considering how packed they are at dinner.
Taking off half a star for the food. 3.5 stars!

If you plan on coming here be early! I called about 20-30 mins before we were to arrive and was told there was only a 10 mins wait. By the time we got there, it had become a 40-45 min wait. Luckily we managed to find a spot at the bar and squeezed in to enjoy some of their beers on tap. The bartenders will give you a sample of any of the beers on tap if you ask. I tried a few but ended up with the Guinness (my old faithful).
You can order food at the bar so we got t chorizo flatbread while we waited for our table. I wasn't too impressed because although the toppings were ample, they had sprinkled some cumin onto the flatbread which kind of threw the taste off a bit. I didn't think it enhanced the flavors any, but rather, gave it a twist in a peculiar way.
We ended up being seated about 30 mins later and ordered the sliders and the mac and cheese. Both were rather good. The sliders had slices of beef topped with red cabbage -- which I thought needed to have a slightly tart taste to give the sliders a bit more zing -- and served with garlic fries. The fries were fantastic. The accompanying homemade ketchup which everyone raves about unfortunately wasn't impressive to me. It had a strange after taste.
I'm not a huge restaurant mac and cheese fan, but I'll have to admit, this was some pretty tasty mac and cheese. The serving isn't big but just one look and one taste will tell you that the caloric count in this dish is enough to send your arteries clogging. Still, everything in moderation right? It is definitely something I'd order again.
Service was super efficient and exceptionally friendly. It didn't matter who was attending to us, whether it was the bartender, the hostess, our server or the busboy, every single person adopted an attitude that was incredibly positive. I watched the buzz within the busy restaurant and noticed how smoothly things just moved in there. The staff worked together very well -- a sheer sign of great staff training. Kudos for getting it right!
This isn't a 'spa' in that there is no sauna, steam room etc so if you're looking for that, go to Burke Williams. There is tea in the waiting room area if you wish you have get yourself a cup while you wait.
My therapist, Yvette, had very strong hands and applied a hard pressure during the massage. There were moments when I could feel slight pain, but I also realize, no pain no gain and although Yvette told me to let her know when the pressure is too much, I thought it didn't get to the point where I couldn't take it any more, so I didn't bring it up -- I would've if it had gotten too much though, I'm no masochist!!
My sore points were shoulders and lower back -- my usual spots -- and Yvette even massaged my scalp, and to my surprise, my head hurt like hell! I asked her later why this was the case and turns out, I'm a 'jaw-clencher' -- well yeah I knew that I did that subconsciously whenever I'm stressed out and there has been a lot of stress in my life of late but I didn't know that jaw clenching led to scalp pain! Whaddya know?
I felt so relaxed after it was over! By early evening, I felt this wave of exhaustion overcome me and felt like I was coming down with something so I went to lay down for a while. I fell asleep and boy did I sleep. I hadn't slept this well in god knows how long! I woke up 2 hrs later and now, I feel sooooooooooooo relaxed!!!
My only complaint is that the walls are thin and when people are roaming around outside chatting, you can hear it. Other than that, what a gem of a find! I hardly ever come to this side of Costa Mesa and since Total Body Care is tucked away on a residential street, it's hard to see if you didn't know it was there.
Yvette is absolutely fantastic! I would definitely go back to her again. And oh, she gave me a bottle of water promptly after I walked out of the room to rehydrate myself! Now that's what I call service!!

The girl working there was very patient with us. The store is quite large consisting of two rooms, filled with things perfect for gifts.
If you are in the area, stop in! It's worth the browse!
