Simply Amazing.  That's right, with a capital A.  It's been over a year since my last review, and after many a visit since then, things have only gotten better.  I've had the Omakase at the counter more times than I can remember, and each time it's different, and quite fantastic.  Dinner last night was no exception.  I came armed with my trusty point & shoot camera this time, so here's the rundown of the magical meal with imagery:

Cucumber and Salmon Sunomono:  Appetizer dish with vingared Japanese cucumber with small bits of cooked salmon mixed in.  http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Good Golly Miss Molly.... the Bellymeter is set to fantastically ecstatic.  We saw an ad for this place in a Japanese publication over at Sakura Saku and decided to give it a go.  Mike F was making the drive down from Palm Desert and had dinner set up with friends & family, so Emily & I met up with them and got to try something new.

We entered around 7:30pm and there was a friendly older gentleman at the sushi bar with his son who was throughly enjoying the fare.  He followed the chef from Kitayama to here just for the fish quality (lives on the Newport Coast and HATES driving, but he'll drive here once a week for the fish).  First thing he did was order us a bottle of chilled super smooth sake and a garlic-ponzu albacore sashimi dish.  The taste?  Amazingly good.  Thanks Mister!  Upon his suggestion, we all decided on Omakase all the way.

We ended up enjoying ourselves there for almost two hours.  Super killer tasty melt in your mouth varieties of fish, quite a few of which were flown in from Japan, kept us super happy.  (I'll let Mike F get into the dishes on his review...)  I'm a bit of a picky sushi eater... and every single thing that came our way made me let my eyes roll to the back of my head and chew slowly to make it last longer.  I took lots of pics... lol... had to.  Everything looked so nice!  And last, but definitely not least... dessert.  We had a soymilk pudding with a berry juice layering which was divine.  And no tummy rumbling for my lactose intolerant system to boot!  I can't wait to come back again.  Great stuff abounds here.  Don't come for the cooked stuff, although I'm sure it's plenty fine... come here for some fantastic fish.

I've never been much of a Soccer fan... other than when I was a kid, and was actually playing it on the playground during recess.  I thought of watching almost 2 hours of people running back and forth with a high probability of a 0-0 tie made me tired just thinking about it.  =P  The Home Depot Center isn't very large so pretty much anywhere you sit will give you a great view of the running... I mean Soccer Action.

A good friend of mine works for one of the MLS teams and always has seats available for us.  2 years later, we finally decide to check it out.  We were there about 30 mins before game start so I figure it's plenty of time to get a beer, especially since there were only 4 people ahead of me in line.  Yeah, no.  Maybe I just picked an unlucky stand, but holy molasses it was slow.  The game started just as I got to the front of the line, and beer in hand, we hot tailed it to our seats.  Before we got there a big roar resounded in the stadium.  Crap.  If I missed the only goal for the whole game I'm gonna be pissed.  Luckily, there were a few more goals, and quite a few near-goals as well.  The game ended up a 2-2 tie, and we got to see David Beckham.  Pretty cool.  Whereas I'm not a diehard fan yet, I do wait a few minutes before flipping the channel now when Soccer is on TV.  Go Chivas!  =)

I'm torn... a few years ago, I'd have given this giant dive bar 4 solid stars... now I'm tetering between 3 and 3.5.  It's old, it's divey, and it's a good thing as that in itself carries some appeal.  Across the highway you can monorail it over to Buffalo Bills or Terrible's (the old Primadonna or Primm Valley depending on how far back you go), for a newer type of gamblin' saloon.  Usually, I'd win here if I lost in Vegas, and if I won in Vegas, I'd usually lose here.  All three properties have been taken over by Terrible's now, and the only thing that irks me is that they changed the Blackjack payout to 6-5 instead of 3-2.  It's hard enough to win against the house as it is... but c'mon now... no need to kick me in the nads one more time before I leave town.

Under new ownership (Terrible's).  Double Deck blackjack only pays out 6/5 here as well as Primm and Buffalo Bill's across the highway.  This place has a dingy divey feel to it (in a good way).  Usually I can make some money in here and head home with a smile.  Wheel of Fortune dollar slots usually pay out ok, but there are only 4 of them and the old timers can sit at one machine for hours on end so it's tough to snake a seat.  The food in the cafe is decent, and they certainly dole out monster sized portions.

I like the fact that if I'm buzzed playin' blackjack, or buzzed getting mugged by the one armed bandit Wheel of Fortune slot machine (which I now call the Wheel of Doom), and a Spam Musubi craving hits, I can pop upstairs, get it handled, and then get back to the debauchery.  Also, a nice hot steamy bowl of Saimin goes a long way after those nights out drinking until 6am...

We used to always hit this place when we were in Vegas back in the day... even back when they were located on the other side...  (don't go as often now since the comps at the Cal are lame)  Local plate with beef teri, chicken teri, and spam musubi is killer.  Get an extra side of their mac salad as well.  Their saimin and teri burgers are decent as well.

Old School.  It's been many a moon since I've stayed downtown... On this trip out, my usual spot Red Rock was sold out.  Bummer dude.  We were rolling into town with a fair number of heads so we opted to stay over at the Main Street Station.  $54 just couldn't be passed up, plus I know they have decent food around, and a few from our group were visiting from Germany and had never been to Vegas before.  The rooms were decent... actually, quite better than decent for the price.  The gambling also went quite good in our favor overall, so you can't beat that.  =)  I like that you can walk across the bridge to get your Spam Musubi fix, and that the tables usually aren't over crowded.  Plus the whole of Fremont street is a short 2 minute walk away so there's even more old school Vegas debauchery to be had without cabbing it.

Pho Saigon

Not too shabby.  The broth has a good clean taste, and with a few squidgels of Sriracha hot sauce it had me in a good sweat in no time.  It is very similar to the Pho Saigon down the street on the Cerritos side of the freeway (sister location according to Mike L's review), and service etc was pretty close.  I would've liked to see more meat for a large size, but oh well.  I guess I'll have to XL that order next time.  Our order got juggled so my Pho Tai went to someone else and I got a Pho ?? that had tendons and other misc cow parts inside, but it was tasty none the less so no biggie.  =)

Bacon Cheeseburger with Jalapenos, Fries, and an Iced Tea.  I like the fact that they have plentiful choices of condiments available at no extra cost.  But, that being said, maybe we just pay for it all on the front end.   Burger, fries, and a drink will set you back about $11 or so depending on which burger you opt for with as many or few toppings as you wish.  Taste was pretty good for me, but at double the Double-Double price, I think I'll stick with Big Mike's when I want a burger combo over $10.

Banducci's Pizza - CLOSED

Lunch hour today had us indecisively wandering about the streets of Lakewood.  Finally, we spotted a Charo Chicken and thought... meh... why not.  We pulled into the plaza and then also noticed Banducci's.  We decided to try something new.  Walking in you'll see a rather large logo done in an urban mural styling (graffiti art), and the other wall adorns all things Chicagoesque.   We were greeted warmly and began to peruse their offerings.  I didn't really feel like a whole Pizza, and their Calzone's sounded tempting.  Then I saw it.  Panzarotti.  What the wild wild world of sports is a Panzarotti?  Ah... it's like a Calzone, but rather than being baked in the oven, this sucker is deep fried.  Now I, having a soft spot in my heart for deep fried anything, zeroed in on this item like a seagull to a dropped cheetoe at the beach.

When it came out, I had to take a time out to compose myself due to the sheer immensity of the size.  This Panzarotti deal ain't no joke.  I'd estimate it to be 11" across easy.  It was decently tasty, and I managed to plow through about 95% of it.  I think next time we'll order just one and split it.  Now I'm desperately fighting off the food coma and bravely facing the second half of the work day.  Good thing I don't have to operate any heavy machinery... =P  Pics and menu are up.

Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits & Gas?  Well, I guess usually there is a good chance of some methane production post-Popeye's, but in this case, that's not the type of gas they're referring to.  =P  Today gas was $4.11/gal for 87, which isn't too bad.  Food was decent.  You'll get your standard Popeye's fare which fits the bill perfectly if you're a greasetarian such as myself.  I usually divey out 4 stars for Popeye's as it's one of my favorite fried chicken chains, but one of my pieces ended up being medium-rare, which is good with steaks, but maybe not so great with chicken.  They got me a replacement piece with no issues.  Chalk up another joint for the lunch rotation.  Pics are up!
