Saigon City Restaurant

A friendly little Vietnamese restaurant where the owner pats you on the back, and if you go often enough, will remember your favorite dishes.

My partner and I often order the cold noodle salads, and since we no longer eat beef (all of the meat-based pho have beef broth), my daughter gets the hot egg noodles with shrimp.  Many of their bubble tea flavors are made with fresh fruit (based on what's in season), and they're happy to add either tapioca balls or lychee.

It's inexpensive, filling, and the noodle salads are full of veggies.  (Kids really dig the fresh basil leaves.)

Clean environment (on the Ave even!), fast service, tasty menu choices.  Great Yellow Curry Fried Rice and Pud Kee Mao.  Don't bother with the soups, they never seem to turn out right--their Tum Kha Gai is very sweet and bland otherwise.  We go here often because it's near the UW, and rather inexpensive for the quality and service received.

Tasty food, atmosphere reminiscent of a Mexican Denny's.  We still go here often, they are quite amenable to kids--the children's menus are inside Little Gold Books, giving kids something to read while they wait for their food--and as always, I'm a fan of a restaurant with good salsa.  I typically order their flautas, which arrive crisp, hot and served with heaping amounts of sour cream and guacamole.  They make a decent arroz con pollo as well.  Friendly staff, usually quiet for lunch, but that's all right.

Bar usually includes footbol (soccer) or Latino soap opera on the television.

Tasty salsas, big portions, friendly and quick wait staff.  We visit it frequently--it's the best Mexican restaurant local to us and we especially appreciate the low-priced lunch menu.

Decent atmosphere, if you don' t like the decor, chances are you can look out a window.

Mm-mm.  Want good home-style Mexican?  Want salsa that actually has flavor AND kick in Seattle?  Come to Mama's (Bitchin') Mexican Kitchen!  Gods, this place is tacky, anyone can see, but it's the loud novelty of the place that is almost warm and welcoming.  Murals line every wall, giant bugs can be seen atop faux grass huts, and let's not forget the Elvis sightings.  Ah, but not only is there much to talk about here, there's a lot of yummy food.  Too many of Seattle's Mexican restaurants leave you wanting for flavor, spice, and variety.  Not Mama's.  And if you do go, order the hot chocolate--it's made to order, so plan ahead and order early, you will be very happy you did.

Does it get any better than this?  Ok, so the service is slow, but you're meant to linger and enjoy your food, this is not the place to get a "quick bite to eat."  You could spend an hour just examining the case of oddly shaped and decorated tequila bottles.  The decor is elegant and eclectic at the same time, the food is divine.  Truly!  Their poblanos are rich in flavor, the avocado sauce featured in several of their entrees is so creamy and seductive, you might find yourself licking the plate afterward.

They not only have amazing dinners, but on weekends, they serve brunch, which includes your choice of breakfast or lunch entree plus all you can eat pastries, fruit and yogurt.  The price isn't bad, either.  And stay for dessert if you're dining late, for they have sumptuous pastries to sample--provided you have the room.

Very good Thai menu, fresh flavors.  Love the crispy garlic chicken and their special fried rice with vegetables.  Thai iced tea not as good as their sister restaurant, Chantanee, in Belleuve, but still quite good food.

Chantanee Thai Restaurant & Bar

Almost everything they do is great.  We have tried almost everything on the menu that is within our dietary restrictions.  One dish we get almost every time is the crispy garlic chicken, which comes with crispy basil (ask for extra).  We rarely do fried foods, but this is one we can't pass up.  Decent prices for decadent foods.  They provide excellent vegetarian and fish dishes, as well as inexpensive and delicious Thai iced teas.

The only down side is they moved and parking is much harder than it used to be.  They have a sister restaurant--Pen Thai--in Bothell, and while it has a similar menu, it doesn't live up to the great food at Chantanee.

Blue C Sushi

Hey, if you want fast, simple sushi, or you're really new to sushi, try out Blue C!  It's instantly satisfying to sit down next to the conveyor belt and grab what you want.  Everything priced by color of plate.  They do have sashimi and items not on the menu available to those in the know.

If you want the highest quality in your sashimi, go somewhere else, but if you want decent quality with fun and novelty, try this place out.  Also conveniently located in University Village near ice cream, bookstore, bakeries, drug stores, grocery stores, et al.  Take a walk around on a warm evening to add to the fun after dinner.

Delectable sushi.  High end prices.  Sometimes slow service, but convenient location to University Village.  Far higher quality and more authentic fare than Blue C nearby.  Certain cuts of sashimi were so plump and fresh they melted in my mouth.
