Soon To Be A Hotspot, Not A Hideout

I'M BACK BITCHES!  I haven't written for a while, been busy reopening and running a restaurant, consulting, playing an asshole on a recent Food Reality Show and even dropping in on Kitchen Nightmares...  But I'm glad to be writing again especially when I get to come back with something as cool and unique as The Escondite.

So I stopped in on Sunday afternoon with my brother.  First off, it's easy to find.  Parking was free and easy as there's a lot next-door.  There's patio that has a completely unobstructed view of Downtown.  It must look glorious at night, but it was daytime and hot as an Egyptian camel's balls outside so we definitely weren't chillin on the patio.  But at night, that's where I'd be.

Inside, the decor is amazingly simple yet has so much personality and character.  The bar itself almost feels like it's a character or has it's own unique voice.  The place is covered with distressed wood that has such a natural rough looks.  The booths, antler lighting over the bar, an old time Coo-Coo Clock, brick wall, blown up western comic books on the wall really define the space.  The back bar is epic, the woodwork is phenomenal.  Brian the owner told us he found the piece in Prague and it's from 1410.  This piece alone would make any bar or restaurant exponentially better.  Kinda like great tits on a chick.
Just looking at the bar I was jealous it wasn't mine.

When it comes to the bar program, they know what's up.  They don't have Patron...THANK THE FUCKIN LORD!  Finally a bar owner that realizes Patron is crap and tastes like aluminum.  If it weren't in rap songs it would be as popular as Zima.  Their tequila selection is great, Milagro Selects, RAH, Herradura and Fortaleza.  When it comes to Bourbons and Scotches they have 'em all.  A really solid selection.  They have about 12 bottled beers and maybe 7 draft, but quality selections, no Bud or shitty domestics.

When it comes to the food, I'd just describe it as fun!  Food with a personality.  The French Fries are hand cut daily and honestly with the secret seasoning they put on them maybe the best French fries I've ever had!  I would be happy getting fat eating their French fries and happier that then I could get on The Biggest Loser then go back and get fat on their fries again.  We had the buffalo mushrooms, basically lightly battered and fried mushrooms in a buffalo sauce.  My brother doesn't like mushrooms but he liked these.  The Escondite (sandwich) is like a Chicago poorboy and dipped in the au jus it was super doper tasty, lots of flavor and I appreciate any place that uses gardinera (Italian hot peppers, like BayCities).  We also had the Captain Kangaroo Burger and the Herve Villachez(sp?) Burger.  The Captain Kangaroo Burger is one of the best breakfast style burgers I've ever had.  It comes complete with a perfect crispy hash-brown and over e-z egg.  The Herve Villachez Burger was tasty as well and introduced us to something new, cream cheese on a hamburger, it also had jalapenos...I know what you're thinking, but you're wrong, it was delicious.  If you don't like cream cheese on a hamburger just go die.  I don't wanna know you or ever hear of your pathetic existence.  Both burgers were ordered medium rare and both came out cooked perfectly.  The meat was tender and juicy, seasoned nicely and just really good quality meat.

I live on Westside, if I want a burger my first choice is 26 Beach Cafe in Venice, but if I lived in closer to downtown The Escondite would be that spot.  The owners Erin and Brian are two of the most radical, personable and fun bar owners I've ever met...  Ask Brian to tell you a story, cause while he looks kinda scary he's really crazy funny.  If you don't like them or the bar, then just go away.  As a native Los Angelino I'm happy to speak for all of us and say we won't miss you and you probably wouldn't have made it as an actor anyway.

I haven't been to The Arsenal in a few months, but I went back the other night.  And what a night to go back.  It was busy but not crazy and amazingly there were so many girls there.  The patio had like 5 groups of girls...no guys....no joke.  The few guys that work there (mostly it's really cute waitresses) said there are always girls here and if there's not, hey there's still the waitresses.
I can't say enough about The Arsenal's Happy Hour 5-8 during the week and 6-9 on weekends.  Allagash Curieux on tap for $8...are you serious.  Father's Office it's $28 and UpperWest it's $11.  They always have a $5 cocktail special which is pretty good.  It was like an alcoholic Cherry Coke, my liver couldn't have been happier.
They got this Mac & Cheese Pizza locked down.  I added bacon and jalapenos as the waitress suggested.  It might be the perfect food.  My friend loved the Breakfast Burger.  And the girls sitting next to us let us try their Beignet Battered Oreos which should be illegal cause they are soo good they are gonna make the hot population in LA fat.
Great food, great happy hour, sexy women, cute waitresses, good DJs and good service, what's not to like.

So, i was at The Arsenal for the 1950's promotion Wed and Thurs.  It was sheer madness.  There were people everywhere.  The whole street of pico was backed up cause of it.

When I came in they told me they were booked full both nights and had been book full since Monday through Friday, but were taking names on a list just in case they could get people in.  I waited about two hours.  It was packed, but of course it was they are selling burgers for .69 cents and filet mignons for $3.  The food took a while, which I expected as it was so busy but when I got my filet it was awesome.  I'd def pay normal price for it..

Thursday it was even busier than Wednesday and they ran out of filets and New York steaks before I could get one so I ordered off the regular menu.  The Mac n Cheese Pizza is amazing good.  Add bacon to it.  They also do a LA Bacon Wrapped Street Dog which I'd happily order again.  I love their new happy hour 5-8 Mon-Fri and 6-9 on Saturdays.  They offer a bunch of food options and all beer is 1/2 off, well drinks are $3 and house wine is $3.
I'm going back, but I'm waiting till next week after the promotion dies down.

I really like The Arsenal as a bar.  It's not a dive but it's also not super nice.  It's a great spot to drop in for happy hour or to have a few drinks with friends at night.  The prices are fantastic and the staff is really friendly and attentive.

I love fried chicken tenders.  They are fresh white meat chicken that are breaded and fried in house.  When you stop in make sure you check out the dining room, it's walls are covered with antique weaponry.

Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries

If you're familiar with In & Out then that's what you'll think of when you walk into a Five Guys Burgers and Fries.  The menu, burger styles and even the look of the restaurant, red and white tiles, is similar to In & Out.  In & Out and FatBurger are my two favorite fast food style burgers and I was hoping that Five Guys would blow them both out of the water.

This didn't happen...

Five Guys offers four different options for burgers; Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Baconburger and Bacon Cheeseburger.  I went with the Bacon Cheeseburger and I had them put everything on it, but I dropped the grilled mushrooms and added Jalapenos.  I also went with the Cajun Fries.

As I waited for my food I found that Five Guys serves Cherry Coke and that instantly put a smile on my face.  I don't drink soda, but I will always make an exception for Cherry Coke, possibly the best soda of all time next to Cactus Cooler.

The walls of Five Guys are covered with newspaper, magazine clippings and zagat reviews from cities all over the country.  When a business puts up a review or two it's nice, but when they put up tons of them it makes me feel like they don't care what the guests think of the food because all these reviews justify them.  It also don't feel genuine when a chain posts a lot of write ups because it wasn't necessary this location that got judged.

The burger and fries comes out served in a brown paper bag.  I didn't ask for it togo, it's just how it was served.  There were plenty of fries and the burger was wrapped in alluminum foil.  I tried the Cajun Fries before I unwrapped the burger and I was pleasently suprised.  They had spicy and great cajun flavors.  These fries were so much better than the bland dull fries that In & Out offers.

I unwrapped the burger.  The meal as a whole was over priced.  It's an In & Out style restaurant and my burger, which isn't big, fries and soda is about $11 dollars.  Too much for a place like this.  Looking at this meal, it's like an $8 dollar combo meal.  For $11 I could go to a sit down restaurnt with higher quaility ingredients and be waited on.

My favorite thing right off the back about Five Guys Burger is the gooey cheese and the doughy bun.  The bun is obviously a cheap nothing fancy bun, but it's super doughy, absorbing of the sauces and just tastes great.  The cheese is American, which is never my favorite but they put so much and it was so gooey that I was game.

I hated the meat patties.  They were thin fast food style patties that had been smashed down on the grill and cooked to a well done.  It even says above the registers that they cook all their burgers to well and juicy.  Well and Juicy doesn't make any sense.  If it's well and it's a thin patty it's not gonna be juicy and it wasn't.  It was as dry as post Metapasual Woman giving a lap dance.

This burger was no In & Out and or $11 dollars I'll never go back to a Five Guys restaurant.  If the burger, fries and soda was about $8 then I'd happily go to Five Guys when I came across one and there was no Fatburger or In & Out near by.

Bite Bar & Bakery - CLOSED

There's a new small very warmly decorated bakery/cafe in Santa Monica that really impressed me last week. Bite Bar and Bakery is unassuming, not a traffic stopper but a place that you should really go out of your way to check out.  They focus on doing small plates and small baked goods but doing them with big flavors.  When it comes to food, unlike sex, size isn't so important.  And with food, when it's small you can try more.

I went for lunch, started with an Arnold Palmer, which was made with a lemonade that had the perfect balance of tart and sweet.  We ordered the "Word of Mouth", a chicken salad sandwich and the Steak Sandwich because they were sold out of the Toasted Crab Sandwich.  We added a side of the Summer Tomato Soup and Cajun Fries.

The Chicken Sandwich wasn't huge, but it wasn't as small as I expected either and it was really, really tasty and totally worth the $4.95 price.  It was a chunky chicken salad with touches of curry flavor giving it a nice unique taste.  The Cajun Fries were simple, but good and even better when dipped in the Chimmicurri Aioli (served with the steak sandwich), which was creamy, flavorful and amazing.  The soup was really tasty as well.  It was sweet, salty and the perfect amount of tomato acidity and something I would definitely order again.  My only complaint about the soup was it was a little thin.

The Steak Sandwich was served on a really nice and soft ciabatta bun and served as four small bite sized sandwiches.  The steak was cooked perfectly, it was tender and flavorful and the Chimmicurri Aioli really put it over the top.

If you're on the Westside and not Size Queen I'd definitely checkout Bite Bar and Bakery.  I tossed in some shots of the bite sized baked goods that they produce from scratch everyday.  I stayed strong and healthy and resisted the temptation...today.  However, I've heard from a trusty source that their Key Lime Pie is maybe the best anywhere.  The rest of these baked goods look pretty awesome.  I'll be back and I'll go prepared with the munchies.

Great Burgers Specials, but only on Mondays

I walked to Rustic Canyon at 5pm, they hadn't opened yet. Apparently, I was a half hour early.  What's interesting is if they had been open and said there was a 30 minute wait, I wouldn't have waited.  Yet, because they weren't open I hung around outside like that creepy old guy in front of a play ground.    I knew this Santa Monica Green Restaurant cooks with ingredients from local farmers, ranchers and fisherman who all practice sustainable agriculture and produces burger specials only on Monday nights.  Last week the burger specials were a World Cup Burger and a Jalapeno Burger.  I love the options and now I was just hoping that these burger did something that Burger Kitchen didn't do, live up to the hype.

My friend and I ordered both burgers medium and ditched the fries for a healthier option of greens.

The burgers showed up and we were a bit disappointed.  It was simply an value perspective thing.  These burger specials were $19 bucks, which most people would say is A LOT for a burger.  However, if these burgers were huge, 10 oz or so then we could see the $19 price tag, but they weren't.   Rustic Canyon's burgers were about average size, about 6 or 7 ounces maybe a little bigger than Umami or Stout.  Like a hooker biting down, the other area that gave us displeasure was their bun choice.  Neither of us likes the overly greased air-puffed bun that it seems every burger spot is using.  I'm just not a fan of this bun.  I like a bun with much more substance, more dough and flavor.  Something that really absorbs more of the juices.

The best thing about this meal was that from this point on, the burgers were AWESOME!  Once we took a bite the flavors from the meat and toppings were explosive making us forget the price tag until the check came.

The Jalapeno Burger was delicious and actually spicy, something that most spicy burgers don't live up to.  It had a really nice jalapeno tapenade blend.  The mix of beef, cheese and jalapeno flavor was simple and perfect.  Nothing else was needed.

The World Cup burger was covered in Manchenco cheese, which looks almost like Nacho Cheese and was so rich, creamy, gooey and unbelievably tasty.  I loved the World Cup Burger and my friend loved the Jalapeno Burger.  Flavor wise we couldn't have been happier.  Our only complain being the price and the bun.  Otherwise, complements to the Chef, those were some really tasty burgers.

A sidenote, the greens were cooked perfectly and had so much flavor I think even kids would eat this veggie.

Overall, Rustic Canyon makes a great burger, it's a little small and over priced so I won't be running back all the time, but if they brought down the price to about $13 I'd be there every Monday for Burger Mondays at Rustic Canyon.

Burger Kitchen - CLOSED

Update - 7/12/2010
Since I published my initial review I have been blasted by the owner of Burger Kitchen, he won't stop messaging me.  So while I wasn't happy the first time I went to Burger Kitchen I will never go back, not because of the food or service even if it is great, but because of the obnoxious, arrogant jerk of an owner.

Here are the repostings of what he has been sending me.

"gen s.'s comment on your review:
Fortunately every review since May 18 has been great. An employee from Pat LaFrieda has been to our place and loved the burgers thus confirming a long term relationship. Sorry you had a bad experience over 7 weeks ago. Come again you will see the difference. By the way why did it take you so long to post your review? Certainly a little suspicious."

I then wrote:

Alan,
I guess I'm not all that wrong cause the 50 or so people that have reviewed you on yelp (real people, real eaters)  have given you an average of 2-3 stars out of 5.  Not so good.  And you have a lot more 1 stars than anything else.  So good luck with your 2000 burgers a week, because McDonald's servers a lot more than that and those aren't so good.  So how many burgers you sell probably isn't the best way to demonstrate the quality of your product.  And maybe you get so many of these "great write-ups" because of your pull within the entertainment industry.  This town is all about who you know and marketing and with your background in the entertainment industry I'm sure you've pulled a few strings to get some great write-ups, probably the same way you got the La Frieda Beef.

Best of Luck with the restaurant, only time will tell if Burger Kitchen is truly a success.

PS. You probably shouldn't spend time defending your burgers on Yelp.  Spend more time ensuring people have great experiences in the restaurant or find someone to run the restaurant for you that can do that and you won't have to worry about bad reviews.

He then wrote me back twice:

As I said earlier. your experience at our restaurant was in the first month or so. I know its difficult for you to imagine that new restaurants have many problems at the beginning which is why no pro reviews them. All your other reviews have been with established restaurants. the fact remains all current reviews have been great.

Thank you, I know no who you are. Your statement that I am bribing reviewers is ridiculous. Only Yelp gave me bad reviews at the beginning , no one else. I don't have to defend my burgers now because the vast majority of people love them. I am not and will never be Mcdonalds, maybe that's where you belong.

And then he deleted his original message on yelp and reposted it as this:

gen s.'s comment on your review:

John S, in private, admits that he came in to our restaurant many weeks ago. Why would you wait until we are getting all positive reviews to post your comments? Why suggest that we would "tarnish" Pat LaFrieda's name? Why defame servers? How is this review constructive? We have admited that we had many problems in the beginning, like all new restaurants or businesses. Judge us now, as so many people have! We are all about giving the best food and service to our customers. Come again and you will see the difference.

You'd have to not eat food, be agoraphobic or be so into yourself and your ESPN special broadcast press conference not to notice all the burger spots that have opened in LA over the last couple of years.  It's almost obscene and most of them aren't that good.  Stout was a waste of space in my stomach.  I'm in the minority of Umami being the biggest rip off in the city.  Golden State is tasty.  Lucky Devil's is a sauce covered mess and 25 Degrees spent more time falling apart then being eaten.   Nobody is coming close to challenging burger greats like 26 Beach Cafe (Venice), Father's Office (Culver City, Santa Monica) or Wolfgang's Steakhouse (Beverly Hills).  The two newest burger spots on the scene are Burger Kitchen in the 3rd St/Fairfax area and Juicy Burger on Sunset.  Juicy Burger just opened after months and months of delays and Burger Kitchen has now been open for a few months and has seen up and down reviews but are convinced they've hit oil with their addition of Pat La Frieda Beef.

I went to Burger Kitchen before they sealed the deal with Pat La Frieda.  If you're not familiar Pat La Frieda Beef is beef from Pat La Frieda Wholesale Meat Purveyors an almost 100 year Manhattan, NY family institution.  La Frieda beef is knows for it's quality and flavor and it's in most of the famous and high end restaurants and hotels in New York.  Getting La Frieda beef outside of NY is very difficult.  A place or two in Chicago has it, but the owners of Burger Kitchen managed to become the first to bring it to LA.  Congrats, but first let's learn how to cook onion rings fully, cut jalapenos and give adequate service... Adequate?  Baby steps...horrible to great service can't happen over night.

I met a friend at Burger Kitchen for lunch about 1pm and we were two of four people in the restaurant, which doesn't scream the food is awesome.  Also it leaves little room for poor service, but that's what we got.  We sat at the table and this almost depressed looking waitress walked by us a few times before ever bring us a menu or greeting us.  It wasn't that she was ugly, she was semi good looking, we even bantered back and forth if "we'd fuck her" but neither of us could get past her mopey depressed look to actually say yes.  Finally, the owner approached introducing himself and providing menus.  He seemed nice enough, but obviously not a restaurant professional as he didn't realize that we'd been waiting and that his waitress sucked even with only two tables.  We ordered the Breakfast Burger and a BBQ Jalapeno Burger, Onion Rings and Fries.

They dropped off totally raw onion rings and broken short pieces of french fries.  The chipotle ketchup with the fries was very flavorful and the ranch with the onion rings was good too.  Too bad the onion rings were totally raw.

With raw onion rings in front of us we had lost all hope for the burgers.  The medium well Breakfast Burger came out well done, but surprisingly the meat actually had a nice flavor.  The bun however was too greasy and too air puffed to help absorb the excess juices.  Bigger issues came in the form of the BBQ Jalapeno Burger which in short showed the bush-league status of Burger Kitchen's experience and ownership.  The burger was ordered medium rare and it came out medium well, but hey, they were both medium something.  The jalapenos you'd expect to be in slices so they are spread across the entire burger.  Only makes sense.  That wasn't the case.  They simply cut the stem off, sliced it once the long way in half and laid it on the patty, so when you bite in you got an entire half of jalapeno in one bite.  I shouldn't even have to say it, slice the jalapeno.

I'll finish with this, if the food is so amazing people will come.  If the food is so unbelievable maybe you don't have to slice your jalapenos, but then again you would and if you didn't I wouldn't nitpick it cause the food is soo damn good.  If the burger was mind blowing I could ignore that it was over cooked or the bun was average, but it wasn't.  Maybe it would have been a great burger if all those things were done right.  Maybe if the service was fantastic I wouldn't have left with a sad taste in my mouth and wanted to give them another shot.  But we'll never know cause all evidence points to they don't know what they're doing.

Good Luck Pat La Frieda, I hope Burger Kitchen doesn't tarnish your good name.

    TOP 5 BURGERS IN LA

26 Beach is...well interesting.  The food is fantastic, however the decor is like Grandma's dining room meets a Southern cafe.  It's very odd to say the least.  The exterior is simple, it's mostly a brick building.  The interior is where the decor gets nutty.  There are tacky old statues and pieces of old beat up furniture, old dressers, random mis-mosh of tables and chairs.  The dining room is much more put together and it feels like you're in a different restaurant.  They two rooms don't go together at all.

    THE BOMBAY BURGER...
The food, as I said is great, especially the BURGERS!  26 Beach has an interesting menu, very eclectic mix of Breakfast, which includes 12 french toast options, 10 Hawaiian Style Royals, 7 delicious pasta scrambles then a few of the typical breakfast items.  If you go for breakfast you must try the  The Polar Bear, it's 2 French "croissants" toasts with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, Melba sauce and grated with white chocolate.  This thing is more like a dessert, but don't be scared, take a chance and go for it.  Everyone knows sugar is the perfect food.  That's why God invented it for us.  For all the great breakfast options they have I was extremely disappointed with the Breakfast Sandwich, it was dry, the bread was too thick and there was entirely too much lettuce.  So like an ugly child just pretend it doesn't exist and pay attention to one of the other menu items.

                                                              THE HICKORY BURGER...

When it comes to the rest of the menu, they have over 20 salads, pastas, pizzas, sandwiches and 17 delicious, creative and interesting Burgers!  All their burgers are 100% Angus Beef, but can be substituted for Kobe upon request.  Stick with the Angus, Kobe is intended to be eaten as a steak, it's not meant to be ground and is overrated for burgers.  My favorite burger is the Brunch Burger, a fried egg, thick and delicious applewood bacon and cheddar on top of the burger with mayo, lettuce and a tomato.  The egg, applewood bacon and cheddar combined with the tasty juicy burger is simply delicious.  This is one of the best burgers I've ever had.  The bun was solid, the meat was cooked to medium rare as requested and it held together as I ate it.  I have no complaints with their burgers, except that I want to eat them all the time.

Besides The Brunch Burger they have a plethora of very interesting other burger options like:
Caprese Burger - fresh melted mozzarella, heirloom tomato, baby mixed greens and drizzle of balsamic reduction.
Bombay Burger - coconut curry sauce, mango chutney, lettuce and tomato.
Italian Burger - mushrooms, marinara sauce, mozzarella, lettuce and tomato.

And for all you sissies or sucky people that don't eat meat, they also offer a Namaste "Veggie" Burger which is made with grains, legumes and vegetables.  As well as the Gobbler a thick hand formed turkey burger and the Salmon Club, a grilled hand formed salmon patty burger.

If you really wanna try something different when it comes to burgers, 26 Beach Cafe does something with a burger I've never seen before and it's gotta be the oddest burger on the menu, the P B & J.  It is exactly what it sounds like, creamy Skippy's peanut butter & Knott's Berry strawberry jam on top of the Angus Patty.  This isn't really my style of a burger, but hell they do a great burger so if you like burgers and P B & J, I bet you'd love it....well maybe...

The only way I would have been happier dining at Bottega Louie is if their wonderful food was served by naked Victoria Secret Models.  I've now been twice and neither time have I seen a Victoria Secret Model or a naked person.  After having one of the best Pizzas of my life the first time I had to go back.  I was already in Downtown for the Grilled Cheese Invitational, which was a horrible unorganized joke of an event that I'd never go back to again, so I jumped at the opportunity to go back to Bottega Louie.  After eating this pizza, if I was in therapy I would give it up, cause no person could make me feel as good talking to them as this pizza made me feel eating it.

On my first visit I went with the Meatball pizza.  The meatballs are mind-blowingly delicious.  And combined with the 100% fresh mozzarella, that is uncompromisingly good (it should be a law that all pizza is made with 100% fresh mozzarella) and their perfect crust, which is so tasty and unmatched being crispy and doughy at the same time.  This pizza instantly became one of my top three favorite pizzas of all time.  On my second visit I wanted to try another pizza, but this one was just so good I couldn't resist having it again and thankfully it was as good if not better then I remembered.  We also added pepperonis the second time.

I also tried a side of Brussels Spouts that were grilled in an olive oil with almonds and seasoned.  They were very tasty and had a slight tough of wasabi which was a really nice idea.

On the second trip we also happened to be there during brunch so we tried the Pancetta and Burrata Scramble.  It was good, not amazing, but I also like my pancetta cut thicker.  However, the burrata cheese makes anything tasty.  My complaint with this dish was the cost versus value.  This tiny scramble that doesn't come with potatoes or anything is like $12 bucks.  That's crazy for a few scrambled eggs.  If I was a midget, small guy or whatever little people liked to be called these days then this little dish might have been the perfect size, but then again everyone knows they also have little pockets and $12 probably doesn't fit in them.  For me, it just made me feel like a giant.

The pizza isn't exactly cheap at around $16 dollars but it's huge and it's so good, I'd pay upwards of $25 for it.

Bottega Louie is an interesting place, it feels very glamorous, but it's also very plain and hollow.  I guess that's what makes it LA.  The restaurant sits in what appears to be a warehouse that they turned into a restaurant.  Everyting is white and clean, but the walls are empty and the space isn't decorated at all.

You go to Louie for the Pizza, but I'd also go to Louie for the sweets.  They have got something for everyone.  The pictures say more than I ever could with words.

They call these Macaroons and they are worth killing over.  When a friend in Hawaii tasted them she said, "Oh my God!  Where did you get these?" And when they melt in your mouth you'll be asking, "How do I get more of these?"

Apparently, Bottega Louie is owned by a couple that was not previously in the restaurant industry.  But you wouldn't know it by eating there.  On the surface and with the food they are doing everything right.  I'm a big fan and whenever I'm near Downtown I will be scurrying to Bottega Louie.  Be sure to save some cash for parking.  It's not easy in downtown and will cost you anywhere from $3 to $10 bucks.  But the first bite of Meatball Pizza makes it all worth it.  If you can't afford the parking and pizza quit going to see your therapist and use that money.  This will make you feel better then lying on a couch and talking to some quack.  Anyone that says food isn't love hasn't been to Bottega Louie.

Everyone knows Houston's, some people know Bandera and I bet the fish lovers know Gulfstream.  You need to know R+D Kitchen.  It's another concept by Hillstone Restaurant Group, the same group that brings you Houston's, Bandera and Gulfstream.  R+D looks and runs like a mini Houston's.  The menu is even similar.  The other night I checked it out for the first time with my younger brother who everyone seems to think looks older than me.  Must be my face lotion, keeps me looking young and sexy at my ripe old age of 28.  Man, I'm almost 30 and everyone knows it's all down hill from there.  Unless of course you're a woman, then it's all down hill after 25.
I'm just kidding.  Don't do anything crazy like throw up your last meal or go get liposuction.  Implants, I won't stop you from doing that, I'm not mad; I'm a man.

At the suggestion of my brother we started with the Dip Duo, which is chips with guacamole and queso.  The guacamole was good, but the queso was amazing.  It was very different than the typical cheesy nacho cheese style queso.  It was thick, it had substance and had a little spiciness from the spices and jalapenos they mixed into it.  This is a recipe I need to figure out cause it would be a hall of fame snack award winner for in front of the TV while watching sports.

We then split the Reubenesque Sandwich and the Ahi Tuna Burger, which is a hard to get item at the Santa Monica location.  Apparently, they run out of this burger almost every time they offer it.  It's not actually on the menu, but they consistently offer it as a special, it's just about getting there before they run out.  We got the last one and I heard at least 4 people ask for it after us.  Too bad bitches!

The Reubenesque was one of the best Reuben sandwiches I've ever had.  They split the corned beef and piled the coleslaw between the meat and then fried up the cheese on the rye bread giving the bread a cheesy crisp chip like taste.  This is what I love about Hillstone's concepts, they do simple foods and just make a little simple change to the traditional and it makes their food consistently delicious and have a unique touch.  The Reubenesque was right in line.  I applaud this sandwich and hope more people discover it.

The Ahi Burger wasn't as great as I had hope.  It was good flavor wise, but it was so packed with flavors the ahi kinda got left behind.  I wouldn't say it was bad, it just wasn't as great as Lazy Dog Cafe's Ahi Burger or Library Ale House's Ahi Burger, which has set the bar for me.  The Ahi was also a little over done.  It needs to be seared and ours was cooked all the way through.

All in all, The Hillstone concepts are so consistent and always provide great meals in lively warm environments.  Hillstone concepts set the bar when it comes to chain restaurants.  While most chains dumb their food down in terms of flavor to appease the mass market idiot guests who don't know their taste buds from a dogs ass, Hillstone goes above and beyond always serving up delicious flavorful food they way it should be.

I'm always afraid to review sushi and it's not cause I think all Asians are Ninjas.  That would be awesome, but everyone knows only like 83.7% of Asians are Ninjas, many are just regular people.  But seriously, I believe you must have a very refined and trained palate to tell cuts of fresh raw fish apart and be able to determine which are better than others.  I've really tried to stay away from reviewing sushi places, but recently I've been visiting a sushi spot on a regular basis and each time since it's opened a few months back it's gotten better and better.  And now it's one of my favorites.

At Misofishy on Lincoln Blvd just South of Pico in Santa Monica Owner and Superhero/Ninja Sushi Chef Steve is blazin' a tasty trail of delicious and fun flavorful sushi.   Steven also seems determined to bring a raw excitement and energy to the restaurant and make Misofishy a part of the community through his kind, caring, personable and sometimes even wild personality.  I've watched, as Steve was quiet and focused as he put together a sushi roll and I've observed him amp up the energy and throw down sake bombs with guests at the sushi bar.  He's got a way with names and faces, remembering everyone that comes through his doors.  If he doesn't remember you, it's not him, you're probably just unmemorable.  Remember, there's a good chance he's also a Ninja, so don't question him.

The last time I was at Misofishy we ordered a bunch of dishes that we've never had before and everything was fresh, flavorful, tasty, beautifully plated and just spot on.  I'm not gonna go into crazy detail about what we had, but take a look and like at a funeral I'll say a few words about each dish.

2 Great Starters
Beside the traditional miso soup you gotta check out these appetizers.  Both are great for sharing, very tasty and creative.

Above on the right is the spicy tuna on crispy rice and if you like spicy tuna these tripods of crispy rice were a perfect foundation for them.  The rice was packed tight and deep-fried and then the semi spicy but more so flavorful spicy tuna was pilled on top.

They call these odd looking stuffed mushrooms to the right the Monkey Brain, which is a bit off putting but this starter rocks.  They are very light and a very tasty way to start the meal.  They take a large mushroom and stuff it with crab, spicy ahi tuna, then they batter the mushroom in a light tempura mix and quickly fry it.  It's topped with my favorite Asian sauce, Ponzu.

This platter is simple for the none super fishy lovers, it's a California roll and a spicy tuna roll.  These rolls are too simple for me, but my friends really enjoyed them.  I like my sushi to have a more pop, more zing and California rolls just are never gonna do that.  But Misofishy does them just as good as anyone.  Misofishy has many menu options for the non raw fish eater.  So if you love sushi but your significant other, friend or that person that comes with you that is caught in the friend zone doesn't like sushi there are still plenty of non sushi options at Misofishy.  On other trips I have had many other sushi (non roll) items, including Albacore, Salmon, Yellowtail, Scallops and while I love rolls all those cuts tasted extremely fresh and were as good as any that I've ever had anywhere else.

The Popcorn Baby Lobster Roll was a pleasant Tempura roll surprise.  The small fried pieces of lobster are crisp and really tasty and they sit a top a California roll.  The combination of the baked tiny lobster bites with the sushi roll, seasonings and sauces was simply perfect.

I really enjoyed this 3 Amigos Roll, it's shrimp tempura, then topped with spicy tuna and Albacore and then drizzled with ponzu sauce.  It's a really tasty and somewhat simple roll.

This last roll was a surprise from Steve, I'm not gonna lie either I was a little buzzed when we got it so I don't know what it was called.  However, I do know that as soon as this tasty roll that was topped with spicy tuna, panko breadcrumbs and eel sauce touched my lips I was hooked.  I consumed this roll like all the others.

Everything I've had in my eight or so trips to Misofishy have been tasty, fresh and really delicious.  Steve is a great chef, host and ninja.  If you love sushi and haven't been to Misofishy yet, drop what you are doing and get over there.  I'm sure you'll enjoy the food as much as I do.  If you don't just don't tell Steve, he might throw Ninja Stars at you.  I haven't seen him do it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he's gifted when it comes, to throwing ninja stars, playing darts, horseshoes, scaling buildings, assassination and making balloon animals.  He's multitalented.

On my website there are pictures that relate to this review.  Might be tough to understand it without the photos linking up to the paragraphs.
