Sam's Anchor Cafe

Categories: Bars, American (Traditional)

4 star rating

Sam's is the classic Sunday late afternoon spot in the summer (and I mean the 6-month Bay Area summer) to wind down in the sun after a packed weekend. The chowder is piping hot if not inspired in its ingredients. The calamari is spot-on and goes well with their Bloody Mary. Come for the vibe, not fine dining!

If you're seeing a movie across the street at the Playhouse, just let them know and they can expedite your service.

King Yen Restaurant

5 star rating

Pat G. and I agree that King Yen has the best Coca Cola in the known universe. That's partially a result of thirst brought on by the salty, savory, fatty (MSG-y?), crisp, piping hot food.

Here are some great dishes:
- Egg rolls
- Sizzling rice soup
- Hunan beef
- Potstickers
- Hot & sour soup
- Mu shu pork

Good for groups of any size or for take-out.

Basis of rating: Wednesday nights, when they have (at least as of 2005) a smorgasbord of martinis that aren't really martinis for all adult ages and genders.

Palms

Once you've stayed at Wynn/Encore and perhaps a couple other places on the strip, try staying off. And if you're staying off and haven't yet tried the Palms, give it a shot just because of how classic it is.

Here's a suggested itinerary:
- Friday morning, check in early (they're usually fine about that), and hit the pool party, which pops on Fridays in the summer (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
- Friday afternoon, catch a movie (they have a full cinema and IMAX)
- Friday night, start out at Ghostbar, which is a good place to make new friends if you're looking to expand your group (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
- Late night, head across the street to Gold Coast for bowling. The more, the merrier (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
- Saturday brunch, take the skywalk over to Simon (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
- Saturday night, Oakenfold at Rain (pick a weekend when he's there) (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
- Sunday, get down to the strip ASAP for brunch at a classic poolisde buffet like Caesar's (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and spa at Wynn/Encore (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) if you have time before your flight

Wing Lei

I'm afraid the genius of Wing Lei's tastes and textures was too subtle for my over-stimulated palette. Had the duck tasting menu and enjoyed a few of the dishes but didn't find any remarkable.

Bar

5 star rating

Thursday nights at Bar were a staple of New Haven living:
- Nearly free drinks and microbrews
- Creative, Paper thin, over-salted, perfectly flavored, slightly burnt pizza
- Pool
- Lots of your friends due to the above

T-Rex Barbeque

The concept of BBQ and whiskey in a pristine, two-storey dining room is a cool idea. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows behind the bar stands out but works well in this light industrial neighborhood.

Burger with blue cheese and bacon was delicious.

Look forward to trying the ribs next time.

If my math is right, the latest vulture investors are demanding only 11.9% IRR to, in all likelihood, go through BK proceedings and become the proud new owners of BBI. What is the play here? There's no PPE, so it's not like you can turn it into a REIT. Sell the customer and subscriber lists to NFLX or AMZN? Some transferable sweetheart distribution window with the studios? I'm sure they thought this through and there's some play here I'm not aware of.

Oh, as for this local BBI down the street on Mountain Blvd: I wouldn't buy from an art gallery whose owner cut out chunks from the canvas where he thought the artist went awry. Similarly, I don't buy from BBI (any more).

The cheapest reliably safe and sane place to stay on the strip. If you just want somewhere to leave your bags and take a shower, fine. If you're getting the room comp'ed through your Total Rewards account, fine.

But seriously, just use http://betterbidding.com to get a room at PH for 20 bucks more.
