Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

A friend and his brother took me and another friend here on a Friday night and we had about a little over an hour to check out the place because the conservatory closed at 10 pm.

I did bring my SLR camera but because of the lighting, it was tough to take some pictures. Currently, they were having the Fräbel Glass sculpture exhibition where sculptures were elaborately placed throughout the gardens. The glass was beautiful and elegant. My favorite was the large cubed structures that looked like they were tumbling. Out of the all spaces/rooms, my favorites were the desert room and the outdoor Japanese garden.

Overall, it was a fun experience and wouldn't mind come back here again during the day. I have been to the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco and this one is definitely larger. Going at night would make a great romantic date for all.

Pamela's

I walked over to Pamela's for take out breakfast while I waited for my friends to pick me up for our friend's wedding.

I decided to get the breakfast special -- sausage, scrambled eggs, and regular hotcakes. I waited only 15 minutes for my order and I overheard one of the managers say that Pamela's was featured in People's magazine. Not sure if it was in a past, latest, or  future issue, but it made me look forward to breakfast even more and I definitely thought it lived up to the hype. I quickly gambled up the sausage and scrambled eggs, but those hotcakes were AWESOME! They were thin like crepes and with butter and syrup, it was drool worthy. On my first bite I literally said, "Hmmm..." With the breakfast special, if you pay an extra $2, you can get one a stack of the specialty hotcakes (blueberry, chocolate chip, strawberry, or banana walnut).

The only downside of this place is that it is cash only.

Fat Heads Saloon

My friends and I went to Southside for dinner and to check out the nightlife in this area. Lots of bars on Carson...

I chose Fat Heads because they are considered one of the best burger spots in Pitt. It took about 30 minutes to find parking in this area and once I put my name in for a table of eight, it was an hour wait. We decided to hang out at the bar and get some beers while we wait. I decided to get a pint of their brewed Christmas Ale, which was delicious. One of my friends like it as well.

Once we finally got a table, we ordered two plates of buffalo wings. However, I only ate one because I wanted to save room for dinner. I thought the wing was okay and needed more sauce.  We were surprised how big the burgers were when we saw another table's orders came in. I decided to get the Smoky burger medium well which had provolone cheese, smoky bbq sauce, bacon, and onion crisps. I loved it and the french fries were excellent as well. For dinner, I decided to get a pint of Great Lakes Elliot Ness lager, a sweet caramel lager. I thought it was great along with my burger. One of my friends ordered a steak salad and that was huge. Everyone thought this restaurant was great and they have a large selection of beers.

if I'm ever in Pittsburgh again, I want to come back again!

Primanti Brothers

If you come to Pittsburgh, you have to make a stop at Primanti Brothers. It has been featured on several travel and food shows like Man Vs. Food.

My friend took me here for dinner and each of us ordered a cheesesteak, which is considered the #2 best seller. This sandwich is HUGE! Mainly because of all the coleslaw and french fries piled high within the sandwich. The cheesesteak itself was okay and the meat looked processed. Not that great. The bread is nice and soft. I also ordered a pint of Yuengling on draft. Good beer...

If I do come back, I'm interested in trying the roast beef. It seems like this restaurant is hit or miss depending on what you order. Also the original location is in the Strip district while this location is near the University of Pitt campus, so lots of college students.

Bi-Rite Creamery

 Update - 11/16/2009
This is the 2nd part of CeCe's UYE.

After Ike's, we walked over to Bi-Rite which is about 4 blocks away. Good thing we did because I needed to walk off that awesome sandwich I just ate. When we got to Bi-Rite, no line at all. We let CeCe go first because she was the organizer for this event and I swear that she may of sampled everything they had. haha I did try their Honey Lavender flavor and I thought that I was eating something from Bath & Body Works. I finally settled on two flavors in a small cup, Ricanelas (cinnamon with snickerdoodles) and Brown Sugar with Ginger Caramel Swirl. These two flavors definitely complimented each other well and the ice cream was so creamy and delicious. I did try some of the salted caramel. It was good and definitely had a strong flavor.

If you get two flavors in one cup, make sure they compliment each other or you may not enjoy it. I wouldn't if I had Honey Lavender and Cookies and Cream together. I wish that I bought a pint home of the Brown Sugar.

Still a fan of this place!

This place definitely holds up to its reputation on Yelp.

When I first passed by this place, I was wondering what the heck is this long line for and saw it was an ice cream store. Not just any ice cream, but homemade ice cream. SOLD for me! However, I didn't have time to go check it out, but promised myself if I'm in the area again that I would try it again.

After lunch the other day, we headed over here and saw the line was long, but decided to brave it out since it's gotta be good. I decided to get a single cup with a scoop of cookies and cream and butter pecan. Once I tasted it, I couldn't stop eating. It's so creamy and rich. Definitely worth the wait in the long line.

I would say this place is about the same or even better than Mary Anne's ice cream in Santa Cruz, but Mary Anne's has more flavors.

    I'm coming back here again!

Ike's Place

I came to Ike's for CeCe's UYE this past Sunday and was in sandwich heaven. I took the BART, got off at Mission/16th and walked about 6 blocks to Ike's. I got there at 5 pm and there was hardly any line. I already knew what I wanted, the Menage a Trois (Halal Chicken Breast, Real Honey, Honey Mustard, BBQ, PepperJack, Swiss, Smoked Gouda) with everything, one of their famous sandwiches and featured on the tv show Man Vs. Food. I even kept the pickles in my sandwich and I HATE pickles. Since we were yelpers for the UYE, we got a free bag of chips and drink also. The Menage a Trois was fantastic. The shreaded chicken was tender and all the sauces put together made this sandwich even yummier. The sandwich was huge too, but I managed to finish all of it. *oink, oink*

The wait for getting your sandwich can be long. I waited about 20 minutes, but I thought it was worth it since the sandwich is made fresh. Hardly any tables to eat at, but I managed to score a big table for our group. Also Ike personally brought our sandwiches out and was really nice. He was really excited to see us yelpers and checked on us a couple of times. He gave me extra napkins also because the Menage A Trois can be messy. I bought an extra Menage A Trois with no onions for Aaron and the sandwich was just as good 2 hours later. He liked it also.

I definitely want to come back here to try the "We're JUST Friends", "SF Giants", etc. Good thing there's an Ike's in Redwood City too!

UYE: East Bay Cupcake Crawl

Neighborhood: Downtown Oakland

Cupcakes are one of my weaknesses and I had to go on this crawl.

I brought one of my friends along and we had fun going around checking out the different bakeries around the Oakland and Berkeley area. I did go on a 4 mile run before going to this and hopefully walked off all the calories I gained between the bakeries.

We only visited 3 (Market Hall, La Farine, and Adeline) out of 6 bakeries because we had to meet up with my friend's mother-in-law and friend for lunch. At each stop, the cupcakes got tastier and better. Too bad I missed out on Bakesale Betty. One day I will conquer you!

This was a great idea and big thanks to Mark and Ligaya for organizing this event and for the Yelp bandanas and stickers. Cupcakes are the breakfast of champions!

I came back here again to try the pulled pork with coleslaw sandwich. This sandwich was sooo good. The pork was tender, the sauce was fantastic, and coleslaw was yum. Like my previous visit, service was pretty fast and parking around B St. and 5th is never a problem. I also ordered a freshly baked cookie and a pint of ravoli. Delicious!

Definitely one of my favorite sandwich places in downtown San Mateo.

I hardly go out to lunch during the work week because I always bring my lunch from home, but I wanted to go out and get something to eat for a change. I found this place on Yelp and headed out to downtown San Mateo.

I decided on the East Coast Special on a soft roll and it was delicious. The quality of meat was really good and I actually ate salami. And I hate salami -- partly because I don't like the smell, but I figured with all the other ingredients, I wouldn't notice it. I also ordered a side of potato salad and it was good as well. The service was fast and was out the door within minutes.

I'm looking forward to trying out the different sandwiches especially the pulled pork. This deli will make you forget about Subway or Togo's.

Tasty Subs & Pizza

I met up with Aaron and his coworkers. I forgot what I got, but we got a large pizza and for an extra dollar, you get a ticket for a pitcher of Bud Light or pay an extra $4 for a pitcher of the expensive beer. Good deal! The pizza was really large, tasty, and it wasn't greasy at all. Between the three of us, we still had leftovers which I took home.

For a Tuesday, it wasn't too crowded and I was able to watch the Sharks vs. Nashville game on the big screen. This place gets looked over because St. John's is nearby, but this is a good after work spot for some cheap eats.

San Jose State Spartan Football

Category: Amateur Sports Teams

4 star rating

I went to my first college football game this past Sunday, San Jose State vs. University of Nevada Wolfpack. I went to a college where ultimate frisbee was the main sport, so I was pretty excited to check a football game out.

First we went tailgating in the parking lot where we ate burritos, drank some beers, and tossed the pigskin. I suck at throwing a football, but I can catch one.

The game itself was a blowout by Nevada, 62-7. San Jose State spent more time going backwards to the opposing end zone than forwards to their own and there was no defense on the rush. We left in the middle of the 4th quarter, so I missed the one SJ touchdown. The main highlights for me was Crazy George (he invented The Wave), watching and listening to the marching band, and the heckling from the crowd.

I wouldn't mind going to another SJSU football game, but hopefully San Jose State will be more competitive.
