Gorilla Coffee

Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Park Slope

5 star rating

I'm saying 5 for the coffee, by far the best iced coffee I've ever had. While I am typically a black hot coffee, when I come to Gorilla I often get the iced with just a splash of half and half.

If I was rating on atmosphere, I would have to take a star away, it's not cozy like Red Horse or even quirky like Witches Brew on the Island. It is, as other reviewers have said, a bit intimidating.

That said, the baristas are nice, helpful and talented, and I come here for coffee. So five stars it is.

We stopped into this little coffee shop when visiting Philly recently. What a great spot, decent (fair trade/organic) coffee, and the best bacon I've ever tasted. Yes, some of the choices are a little pricey--but I really like the idea that the restaurant makes an effort to buy local, naturally grown produce.

53rd and 6th Halal Cart

There are other carts in the city that I enjoy immensely for other reasons, but the combination of the experience, the sauces, and the method by which they cut up the chicken/lamb to avoid gristle and other no-nos make this a must-have experience for anyone not afraid to dine from an establishment that does its business on the side of the street. At least its a relatively classy street, near the tony shopping of fifth avenue and the Hilton which has helped me to locate this cart while drunk on more than one occasion.

Now, I've noticed another reviewer mention the other locations: I myself just noticed that last night. But I do have to say the camaraderie and experience of waiting in the long line are a vital part of the experience. I hate to curse the other locations any more (they rarely have any sort of a line), but I think this location has got to be it.

Most get the rice platter, but personally, I think the 4 dollar sandwich is the best. Of course I was raised by a man who looked forward to post-dinner leftovers for sandwiches more than the main course, so I might be biased. But the sandwich is the perfect post-bar meal, compact, greasy and flavorful.

One final note, which I'll say as discreetly as I can.. don't go too crazy with the hot sauce, or you'll be reminded throughout the next day of what you had for dinner at 2 AM the day before.

Recently visited this place based on a recommendation from Lyla, a lovely minister we met on the ferry to Camden. The food here was really fantastic, and while the Thousand Layers bread didn't actually have 1,000 layers, it was one of the highlights of the meal. The squash tempura was nicely battered, and was also delicious.

My entree, the house noodles were perfect, dense yet silky, with a great tomato-based sauce. My only regret? The leftovers got smashed in my backpack and we didn't get to eat them later.

Love this store. Seriously, what a great vibe, and none of the snobbery you find at some upscale stores. These guys know their stuff and don't treat you like an idiot if you don't. All around class acts.

These guys saved my friend a ton of money on a tune up by pointing out that the more expensive tuneup would be more than the (old) bike was worth. And when we got it back, they had performed the complete service anyway.

What a welcome addition to the fledging mid-gentrification neighborhood of Bushwick. Mr. Kiwi's is bright, clean and the produce is fresh and varied. This place is also very cheap, and the owner is friendly and always helpful. Better yet, they frequently will mark down produce that is on the outs, which make for some great deals for soup and such.

Plus, the store carries the basic convenience store items.

I had never heard of this place before, and wandered in during a shopping outing in Union Square. I was kind of confused and am still not sure how to process what this place is all about. I was here during the day, but I will say that the waitresses are gorgeous, or at least ours was.

The burgers are awesome, quality meat that I wasn't afraid to order medium rare. All in all, seems to be an okay kind of joint.

Olive Garden

Hey, what can I add here? I'm not going to pretend Olive Garden doesn't taste good, it's engineered to taste good. But at the same time, something sticks in my gut about paying 20 dollars for a plate of cheese lasagna. I will give this place its due though- the waitstaff was great, and they gave us two servers for a 15-person party.

I'm not enough of a snob to say that everything's terrible here and the food doesn't taste good, but I am enough of a snob to try and avoid this place with so many others to try. I'll keep my Olive Garden visits to business trips to boring strip mall towns with no local restaurants.

This place is definitely a dining experience, an experience dependent on the incredible decor. This place has more of the feeling of a high-end club than a restaurant, with exposed brick, impossible three-story high ceilings and a 16 foot statue as a centerpiece. Interestingly enough, there are also lots of women decked out as though they are at a club, maybe women intending to visit one later in the night.

The food was hit or miss, never bad, but oscillating between amazing and very good. On the amazing list: Shabu-Shabu (your choice of Kobe or filet mignon),and the sea bass (in both appetizer and entree forms perfect in taste and texture). Everything else we had was great, the peking duck was well-presented and well-cooked, the sashimi was good if the presentation was a little boring, and the chicken sate was also well done.

I had to run out before dessert, but what I saw go by looked great.

This place was a great first impression of North Carolina-- Within minutes of my arrival, there was a bar fight which I narrowly avoided being a part of. Can't vouch for the food, but this is a good little affordable bar if you are staying in the beach area.

The people were nice, lots of pretty girls and interesting people to talk to, and as a yankee, interesting to see so many people smoking in the bar since that hasn't been allowed up here for a while.
