One of my new favorite places to get coffee, because it was time to take a break from the shops on Rockridge, and Telegraph. I always forget they have food here: sandwiches, salads, fruit salads, pizzas, really nice options.

Always see people working here, but the Wifi is unreliable at times. Either they're not changing their passwords often, or people are streaming massive videos.

Hope to get a 4G hotspot someday so it doesn't matter whether a place has Wifi or not, I'll just have it with me wherever.

I'm glad this one's within walking distance, and you can't miss it's since it's in a former IHOP. I think the food is on par with their Oakland location, but the ambiance, and restrooms are nicer in Oakland.

I haven't kept track of the days I've been there, but it seems their menu for weekday lunches is the same everyday, but don't hold me to that.

Service is a little slow, but the food's fresh and I love it. Great value!

I live nearby, and haven't been there in a while, but it's not my kind of place. It's predominantly an entertainment venue, with a small bar and kitchen tucked to the side and corner. From what I remember, the food's decent, and the staff were nice. But the drafts never came out cold enough.

I just don't like the bar area, that's what bothers me the most.

Guess when it comes to bars, I'll either be somewhere in downtown Berkeley, or Rockridge.

Excellent. Best brunch I've had in a long time. Everything was fresh, especially the salads and grilled vegetables. There's something for everyone here, and I'll be back again!

Started coming here to work because Farley's down the street gets busy, and doesn't offer much space. That, and they close early.

Great food and coffee, clean restroom, friendly staff, free Wi-Fi, and a glass dispenser always full of ice water with glasses in case you're thirsty. The breakfast burrito with turkey was very good, which comes with a salad, and chips and salsa. Very fulfilling.

I really like this place.

Came here after a concert near Davies and wanted to get light fare. Weather was perfect, and got a table outside. Had some drinks, and snacked on fries, spicy pork meatballs, and steak tartare. The smoky ketchup went beautifully with the fries. The bread and butter was also very good.

Would very much enjoy coming again for drinks, or dinner. Nice place with great service.

My friend and I come here for dinner regularly, usually getting something from the Afghan place, or something Japanese. Lately, it's been really drafty inside, so it's kind of uncomfortable eating indoors.

Having said that, they're making improvements such as upgraded seating to wooden high tables and stools, more wall art, etc. I think Guitar Center (formerly Borders bookstore) opens today, and there's also a HOT ITALIAN (from Sacramento) opening in March, beside Peet's coffee. This is welcome news because there's never been a decent place to get Italian at the market. Can't wait to get awesome pizza for a change.

It's getting better and better!

Computer History Museum

Had a great time here last weekend. We were just in time to catch the demo of the Babbage Difference Engine in action. Simply amazing, we'd still be using books of tables if it weren't for Babbage!

The museum starts with slide rules and abacuses, and ends with personal computers, and handheld devices. Throw in some punchcard machines, DEC PDPs, video game consoles, workstations, supercomputers, and Palm Pilots to the mix. My personal favorites were the CRAY, Connection Machine, Alto, Macintosh, Lisa, Apple II, and the NeXT cube. Incredible machines from incredible minds.

I came away with a much deeper appreciation for computers, and how lucky we are to have computers that are affordable, powerful, and portable. I'm still amazed by how large and mechanistic computers used to be, and the very industrial smell they had. I'd be afraid to operate those machines for fear of starting a fire or getting electrocuted!

If you love computers, and are OBSESSED with computers, you need to come here!

Josie's German Delicatessen & Gifts

This place is awesome. My grade school German teacher used to talk about Josie's for all things German. It was great stopping by for the holidays, and checking out what they had.

We picked up a cherry brandy cake, as well as potato salad, which was suggested at the insistence of a dining customer, who was completely ecstatic with how good it was.

And she was right. You'll never look at potato salad the same again, and is completely different from the potato salad found at salad bars and delis--the German potato salad is mixed with oil instead of mayonnaise (I think), and has a sauerkraut and bacon taste to it. Pretty incredible.

The space is very large with the main entrance area devoted to dry packaged goods, with the adjacent room for the deli, dining area, and other goods for sale.

I'll definitely stop by for lunch next time I'm home. I'm convinced they could do real well as a full German restaurant at night, serving dinner.

La Note

The ocean's bounty in your bowl. That's what you get with the Bouillabaisse Marseillaise for dinner at La Note. Sandwiches can be had anywhere, even here. But you can't find something like this anywhere, or have the patience to cook it at home. It's special, it's honest, it's French!

As the menu says, allow extra time for preparation. We snacked on the bread and butter while waiting, and asked for more when running out. Here's the description:

"Our traditional hearty, savory fish stew with a saffron broth, shrimps, scallops, clams, mussels, crab legs, and sea bass, served with croutons and rouille (saffron aioli)"

The seafood was fresh, and the portions generous. It was surprising to find more clams, scallops, and shrimp as we worked our way towards the bottom.

The broth was light and savory. While tempted to add salt to the broth, my friend cautioned that doing so would mask all the unique flavors in the stew, especially the seafood. I agreed, and didn't do it.

We finished with chocolate cake and raspberry sauce for dessert.

It was a great experience, and was surprised there were reservations available 2 hours before dinner on a Saturday night.

I'll close by also mentioning the Lemon Gingerbread pancakes for breakfast/brunch. Absolutely delicious! The deux/short stack is more than filling. Sadly, I ordered the full stack, and couldn't finish it.

As Julia Child always says, "Bon Appétit!"
