Just got back from a nice, affordable lunch at the Beach Hut. The food was tasty and simple. Location is top notch (2 blocks from the ocean).

I had the spicy chicken tacos with french fries and chow fun. Good flavor, not greasy, great price.

Good weekday lunch location.

Mastro's Steakhouse

if you do not like Mastro's - seriously, something is wrong with YOU.

Eat steak, not chicken, not fish, not veggies - steak.

Sides are for the side and they compliment the steak you are supposed to be eating.

Well done steak is stupid. It is like boiling wine and serving it. It changes the flavor - don't do it.

Dress up - this is not a jeans and t-shirt place. It's an event-ish location.

Let go - valet your car, take a recommendation from the bartender, and server, and eat some dessert.

Dakota Live Music Lounge

I think a bar is only as good as the people it attracts. The beer is the same the records are the same (most of the time) and you can only do so much with space. But the people you get to work for you (DJ, bar staff, bouncers, etc) go a long way in making your venue a success or failure.

A large group headed down to Dakota on Friday night for some birthday hijinks. The interior design was good, the DJ was great, the bouncers were nice, the waitress was attentive and engaging, and the bartenders were okay as well. Overall the experience was middle-of-the-road. So the crowd was middle-of-the-road.

I don't know about this location...Temple Bar was never a favorite of mine - it works well as a concert venue, but not so much as a club but it's also not a sports bar.

It's a great space and we brought a party with us, but if I was just looking for something to do on a Friday night I would go to Zanzibar. But if I was looking for some live music on a Friday night - or a comedian or music and comedy mixed with beer and sprinkled in with some DJ - this has a big maybe on it.

Zanzibar

It's Friday night and you need a place to get your shake on...go to Zanzibar. Hip-hop mixed with everything else. I love this place and so do all the people I take here. The drinks are priced right (average).

The key to this place - the DJ and the MC. These guys kick ass and keep the crowd pumped.

Speaking of the crowd - it's a hot crowd but not a Hollywood crowd - so you can actually talk to and get busy with people on the dance floor.

Zanzibar just rocks - see you there on a Friday night (after 10pm).

 Update - 1/15/2009
The buffet price has been upped to $8.95

This is the only place I've been that has gotten busier after the price went up. It's a company favorite and we go at least once a week.

Lunch buffet for $7.95 - hell yeah - it's good! We showed up at noon, the food was fresh and tasty. the veggies were well prepared, the chicken was juicy, and the bread was soft.

    I will be coming back.

Side note: as we arrived, we followed an older couple in the door. The lady quickly turned around and started saying, "Oh no, oh my God it stinks!" Everyone in the place giggled a bit because it smells good, like an Indian restaurant should

Samosa House And Bharat Bazaar

What can I say about Samosa House that has not been mentioned in previous reviews?

How about this - Samosa House is the best restaurant in the Culver City's 'Veggie Corridor' (Washington Blvd. between Inglewood and Sepulveda - includes Leaf, The Wood, Samosa House, and one more that I forget).

The Jackfruit is awesome. Get the combo.

Samosa House is now 'Green' and they offer you bio-degradable packaging and it's servers in a brown bag.

It's also a grocery store for Indian staples - so if you need some Indian staples - come on over.

Ugo: An Italian Cafe

Why would you come to Ugo - I will give you three reasons: 1) the food is tasty, but not really special, 2) the people watching is awesome, and 3) the servers are very sexy.

I visited Ugo on a Saturday afternoon in December. It was a warm day and we split a salad and a pasta dish. Both items were tasty, but not amazing - I've had better. But the people on the streets were awesome. I suggest you sit outside and count how many people were wearing riding pants (not a horse in sight).

The desserts are very tasty so I would consider this place for an after-dinner coffee and dessert.

Check it out.

Dear John's

Categories: Restaurants, Lounges
Neighborhood: Culver City

Was it all a gritty nightmare having intercorse with a dream? No - this place is real. Don't let the overall rating fool you - Dear John's is awesome. I'm pretty sure it's also a mob front for money laundering.

It was the day after Thanksgiving, 2008. My roommate was playing Fallout and I was in the mood for food and drink and entertainment.

When you walk in, your cloths will physically transform into something from the Rat Pack - it's a pretty cool trick.

Against one wall, the bar, against the opposite wall, red booths, and in between are tables. We sat in the center booth, right in the middle of all the action.

When I say action, I mean we were the only people there under 50. Included in that list of fifty-plus individuals was the evenings entertainment - Dean and Richard. These guys were rocking the keytar and keyboard, as well as taking time out to switch to dueling trumpets - AWESOME. They played Jazz, Country, and some Big Band. Everyone was clapping along.

The food was way overpriced so I suggest the hamburger. Best bang for the buck. The drinks are about average ($7 for a makeres and coke).

The most important thing I can tell you about Dear John's - bring the party with you. Other than the evenings entertainment, it was a pretty chill crowd (mostly on oxygen or in wheelchairs). Bring a group of three or more and just enjoy the evening.

Great place to kill about two hours. I recommend you take a date - why, because it's dark in there. Some of the stuff is really cool (art in a pinhead, I'm looking at you...closely) and some of it is HUH!

1st time there - it's ok. I had the grilled veggie salad, I would prefer the veggies be more recently grilled. It was good,, but not great. I recommend California Chicken Cafe for some tasty salad. But the place is nice (I love downtown Culver City), the outdoor dining is great.

Very nice place for a quick lunch followed by some walking around or a movie. Enjoy.
