P.F. Chang's China Bistro

This is our third visit to this location and although the food is always hot and delicious, the service is always horrible. Over 90 minutes, mostly spent waiting for our server, and all we had was one small appetizer and one entree that we split between us. Several tables were seated, served sizable meals, and left in the time we sat and sat (and sat).

If you have good company and plenty of time it's fine because the food is always great, but if you're ever in a hurry or are starved and need food immediately, you'd be better served at any generic take away chinese place in the area.

The Loving Hut

The Loving Cafe isn't all in your face with their "Go Green. Save the Planet." style message but they are backed by the questionable motives of self-titled Supreme Master Ching Hai and several of her products and images adorn the otherwise colorful and modern cafe. But whether you believe in her Quan Yin Method of meditation or not, you'll find some wonderful food at The Loving Cafe.

For curious carnivores and those of us who remember the days of meat there are plenty of replacement choices like the convincing Sloppy Joe and Sweet Orange Sour that's almost indistinguishable from a plate of sweet and sour chicken. There are also vegan versions of spring rolls (both baked and fresh), Vietnamese Pho, sushi, and more.

There are also loads of original recipes that take vegan ingredients like veganaise and vegan cheese and layer on vegetables and dressings to create some incredibly tasty food! The selection of thick smoothies and vegan desserts rounds out the menu that is constantly being added to and supplemented with daily specials.

The service is a little slow right now as the team gets things off the ground and the prices are a little high for the amount of food you get, but knowing that anything on the menu is vegan (and usually delicious) is a convenience that us veg-heads rarely get! Well worth a visit!

Dunkin' Donuts

This is my favorite Dunkin Donuts in Cincinnati! The staff hardly ever mixes up an order and the coffee is mostly consistent from day to day and week to week. The donuts are a little stale at times but that's fast food for ya.

Dunkin is my coffee supplier of choice and I almost always go with an iced coffee, skim milk only. An unexpectedly great combo is an onion bagel with strawberry cream cheese. Go figure. Thanks guys!

Green Sprout

The perfect "college town" eatery, Green Sprout is staffed with helpful and accommodating people willing to adjust most any recipe to your needs. I was still full from breakfast when we stopped in so I only ordered two tofu Triangle Rice but they were tasty and warm. My girlfriend ordered korean bibimbap  which they gladly substituted with tofu instead of meat.

We arrived too late for most of the baked goods but the place is surely swimming in delicious warm bread smells all morning with an array of freshly made choices including red bean, custard, sweet potato and more.

We were visiting from out of town and I'm completely jealous of all the folks in LaFayette who get to eat at Green Sprout every day. We'll be back... one day!

Dusmesh

Neighborhood: Clifton

Previously India Palace, I'm not sure if Dusmesh is run by the same people but the place is missing the awesome Indian pop music videos that used to be projected on a rear wall.

The food, however, has remained quite tasty. Lunch buffet is served strictly at lunch so I have yet to sample its variety of dishes but what I've ordered off of the menu has been great. The Malai Kofta -- fried vegetable balls in creamy sauce -- is my favorite and the Palak Paneer is quite good.

The serving size is a little small for the price but it's still not as high as other local competition. They also have a proclivity towards nuts and raisins in most of their dishes which I personally don't enjoy but can probably be ordered without. The spice level also varies greatly depending on who's cooking; on one visit a 4-of-6 was tame while the 5-of-6 on a subsequent visit was considerably hotter.

Dusmesh is another great choice for Indian cuisine in Cincinnati but it runs the risk of being overshadowed by the dozens of competing restaurants.

Mancino's Pizza

Category: Sandwiches

5.0 star rating

Mancino's pizza may be a local favorite but I personally find it a little bland. What really gets my full five stars is their selection of grinders; large and hot sub-style sandwiches.

The menu is full of many familiar combinations (BLT, Club, etc.) but you can order one of these immense sandwiches any way you'd like. They're available in half size or whole but even the half warrants being cut in two. These things are massive, loaded with toppings and pretty affordable. I've never had a bad sandwich from these guys and their waffle fries make a perfect side.

Visit in the early hours or later in the evening and you might think the modest, golf-themed decor was layered in dust from the lack of customers, but check 'em out at lunch time and you'll see where their business is.

There are also several salad and pizza options on the menu but I haven't sampled many of them. They have a Pepsi soda fountain and cooler including Sobe and energy drinks. If you're in the area, forget about Subway, Quiznos, and Jersey Mike's, Mancino's is THE best sandwich in town!

Rally's

Despite how you feel about Rally's/Checker's food there is no denying that this location has the worst service in the Greater Cincinnati area that I've ever experienced. No matter the time of day they are slow, inaccurate, and the food is oftentimes cold by the time it's handed to me. Even before going vegetarian I'd given up eating here because of the service alone. Sorry guys, you're just not trying hard enough.

El Rancho Grande

Still my favorite "Authentic Mexican Restaurant". I'm not sure how authentic it really is either (hi Jenny A.) but it is wonderful stuff. The complimentary chips and salsa are always hot and fresh and plenty zippy and no matter what you order to eat it's on your table within minutes.

Burritos, chile relleno, tacos, enchiladas, chalupas, and tamals are all favorites of mine and available for cheap on the lunch menu (and with refried beans, rice, or both to boot). There's a ton of house specialties like Chimichangas, Fajitas, and Parrillada as well as a massive bar. Even at dinner the prices are great but it's the super fast service, friendly staff, and great lunch menu that make it my favorite.

Aangan Vegetarian Indian

An Indian market recently expanded into the store space next door and opened this nice little restaurant. While New Krishna is less than a mile up the street, Aangan wins serious praise for having an amazing lunch special.

As of Summer 2008 you can get a choice of nearly a dozen meatless entrees, a salad (garden or onion), Naan (a few choices here), and rice for a little over $5. There is also a dine-in menu though I haven't tried anything other than a few lunch specials.

The Channa Masala is my favorite so far, the Garlic Naan is massive and tasty, but the salad does nothing for me except take up the space that would be much better spent on extra rice. The portions are a little small but given how much you get for the price it's still a great deal. Naturally, you can spice things up as much as you want on a 1-6 scale.

The atmosphere tends to be pretty dark, warm (in the summer), and not entirely inviting to outsiders. I usually get mine to go and eat at work or on the go.

If you're in the area and enjoy meat-free Indian cuisine at a price that you can indulge in daily, definitely check out Aangan!

New Krishna Indian Cuisine

Categories: Indian, Pakistani

5.0 star rating

The best variety, quality and value when it comes to Indian cuisine in Cincinnati. I've tried many of the offerings in the area (including the numerous, fabled Clifton places) and New Krishna is still my favorite.

Their buffet price has increased in recent years but is no worse than anywhere else and their food is acceptably spicy even on the buffet. Menu items are frequently shuffled to the buffet for a greater choice but everything there is delicious including the Kheer rice pudding which is also the best I've ever had.

The menu food is exceptional as well and can be spiced up to your liking. Portion size has shrunk some recently but the prices have at least not gone up.
