Now that I've had my color done by Coco, I have to say I was just blown away. This salon has really impressed me, and Patricia is here. That makes me encouraged to try more services, which I will do as time goes on and update here with more reviews. Coco color is more intricate and detailed than I've ever had. I've had some terrific colorists that I've worked with, never really had a bad experience. Coco had more time for details and creative thinking in the relaxed environment of this fabulous salon. I can't recommend TRIO any higher!

One of my connected social media friends commented that this is a new salon for me, noting the change in venue. Yes it is. I love having a familiar place to go to, with friends and familiarity with the strengths of businesses that I frequent. I am not opposed to change or routine. I am also very loyal and generous to those with whom I find value. I choose to frequent those places and technicians who have the expertise to handle my needs in a way that satisfies me. I don't choose a resource lightly, I don't flippantly let go of a resource for some slight quibble. I choose wisely based on my own experience and trust in the practitioner or business. I'm excited about TRIO!

For my cut I've long trusted Patricia at Trio to do my hair. From the very beginning, when I had a specific need for two hair styles in one, until just a few days ago when she trimmed and styled me for the day I have always had the very best. Patricia is so passionate about what she does, most seem to be technicians. Patricia constantly updates her creativity with very best technique and I like how she says you know you've got a good cut if you're hair is blown about in the wind and it falls back into place. I can attest to that!

When I got cut a few days ago, it was a windy day and I looked when I got home after being out in it at least half the day. It was still practically perfect. After I slept in it, my hair still was styled practically perfect. All I did was shake it and it all fell into place. I tied back a bit and ran three miles. Despite my hair being weighed down from the workout sweat, I still looked done up. I am just amazed and would have my hair styled by Patricia everyday. I will go wash it now and do what I can to emulate what she taught me to do because she's never shy about telling you how to do stuff on your own. She loves what she does that much. And she is that good.

Next I'm going to get my color done by Coco. I'm excited to get to know more staff at the Salon and have become interested in everything that they do. You can find esthetician services, color and cut. I have gone to Salons that are more trendy and, don't get me wrong, they do a terrific job and are very professional, I think it is all about the professionalism of running a top beauty factory. There is something personable about most Salon experiences and you can get way more personal treatment when you frequent a salon that isn't run like a machine. Sometimes I want a machine and sometimes I want a personal touch. Patricia is my hair stylist and encourage anyone to go give her a chance at Trio!

I love this place and would score it five stars except I had my iPad stolen right out of my hands while working on it around the rush hour. I understand it isn't the cafe's fault but the experience left me really sad and down about it and I can't help that either! I still go all the time, since the coffee is prepared perfectly and I've frequented this location more than any other Intelligentsia besides Broadway.

Hippy music, bakery cafe without wifi but a good vibe. They pay attention to making great sandwiches and keeping the pleasant atmosphere inviting. Good magazines to sit and read. I came just before noon and watched the lunch crowd descend on the place but there is plenty of seating, including outside in the warm months. The sandwiches are superb for the price, the cookies are decadent bits of bliss and they make some candy and pastry items as well. I haven't tried the coffee yet. I tried the Turkey Turkey sandwich and a cookie. They provide glasses for a filtered water tap and a scoop for ice. Terrific neighborhood place feel to it all.

Time for me to throw my hat in the ring and review this place. It's pretty much as everybody says. It's a bakery with a small store front that's a bit tiny. It's clean, the food is perfect and the price is amazing. I got the $4.12 grilled pork. I'm not going to try to pronounce the thing, so I just asked for number 4. Terrific sandwich.

The bread roll is not really like a baguette. Sorry but I divert here on that. It's a bread roll. Yes, Vietnam cuisine is influenced by the Colonial France but this bread roll is more just a bread roll, baguette-style. It's baked on the spot however, so it's fabulous.

It's so much more than free smells going on here. The pork was seasoned with sweet chili and the sandwich was overflowing with cilantro and shredded carrots. The whole thing about it was that it is completely fresh and couldn't be a better value for the pocket change it costs.

Vietnamese television was on, a cooler with drinks (I missed the bubble tea but might try it next time) and plenty of stuff you could take to go, including the sandwich. I stayed in and was subjected to the content and language of the TV. It took me far far away as I snacked. Yum.

Citizen Skate Cafe

As someone who once was a small part of the original skater crowd coming of age in the early 80s, having towed some of the legends up legendary hills in my 1975 red VW bug to watch legendary rides, I came in for a coffee here when I happened to be walking past. I admit I had planned to visit to check it out but just got stoked on my way home when I stumbled upon it by coincidence after missing the 145 bus.

I used to be a Betty body surfer and old school skater chick back in the day. Makes me who I am today. The skater punk rock scene of Santa Monica and the surfer spirit of the times left its imprint on my brain no matter how much I've changed. I seek it today for my unique style and expression. There is some original artwork going on here and this may lead to some cool accessories and apparel.

This shop struck up so many memories that I gabbed on about, I felt sorry it was such a one way convo with the staff. I was thrilled to see anything like this in Chicago. I'm cheering from the sidelines with a cup of Honduran, retelling stories thinking like it was yesterday. I wish! At least I get to retell it like it was just yesterday and these guys politely listened to me go on and on about it. For that alone, I'm giving it five stars and hope they thrive. I'm looking forward to summertime!

Great fitting by specialists. They have a lot but it isn't always right on but an occasional tease. I have to hand it to them though, they know their stuff and might have some good finds.

Time to update my review since I just had a second visit. The coffee is great here, so it's something you can count on. The woman at the cash register is so nice and sweet, never mind that she takes her time she's just sweet and may be the owner taking good care of herself and her business. I had another breakfast panini like I had last time because I remember that I liked it.

This time it was a bit dry. I ordered the bacon one, and last time it was the sausage so maybe that's the difference. I like that it comes with a bit of fruit. It's a nice touch and a nice low cost brekkie. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. I actually missed my red line stop and got off to walk a few blocks tracking back. I took my time and had a coffee.

Great clean and spacious bathroom. The thing I would recommend is the coffee and the baked goods look fab. I didn't try them but next time I think I'll skip the breakfast panini and just go for something sweet. Another thing I would be willing to try is the bread. It's probably not the most outstanding but above par. That's just a guess!

I was waiting on a friend when I walked in and discovered this bakery. I decided to have a quick brekkie and coffee and it was done perfectly like the way I wanted it. The baked goods all look fab. I'll be back sometime!

El Taco Loco

So close, yet a ways to go for me. It almost deserves three stars and I'll tell you why. First, it's clean. Even the bathroom is clean and spacious! There's a parking lot for those who need it. If I lived too far to walk then I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but it's nice to have so close by. I even like the decor.

Let's start there. There are real bona fide live plants inside. The tile and paint and paintings are all tops. There's a water fountain as a nice touch. This place is very warm and welcoming inside according to its decor. Daytime TV on actually bothers me though. There's no music. I would rather have mariachi playing on a stereo.

I actually had table service. I didn't even pay until I got up to go to the cash register. That's unusual for a place like this. It's very homey - in  a good way, Holmes. I grew up in LA and these places don't scare me as much as they do Chicagoans who are fair skinned, as I am. It could get dicey after midnight but that says more about Chicago in general.

The food was not so good or it would get the three stars. I can imagine the experiences of others who mentioned the coldness of their entrees, I believe it. Mine was fine that way but I could see it happening. Also, as a dining experience, I had vacuuming going on as I ate - even having to move my feet. I appreciate cleanliness so I'll give that a pass.

Here's the thing, I ordered a combo to try various things: taco, tamale, enchilada plate. Standard fare chips with salsa, beans and rice less than standard fare taco, tamale and enchilada. The taco meat was too wet like sloppy joe, the tamale far too doughy and the enchilada was barely recognizable as an enchilada.

Point to point, the taco had fresh lettuce and tomato with sprinkled cheese but the meat was just sub standard. The tamale had teeny weeny bits of pork barely discernible from the overwhelming corn meal. And the enchilada was saucy, which is good but not when that's all it is: a saucy mess of nothing much.

This is great for emergency Mexican food with a parking lot, clean bathroom and great room to sit and enjoy practically 24 hours a day. I'll try the burrito suggestion, and if it's good? I'll add a star because it is so close to being 3 stars for the decor, the cleanliness and the bathroom.

For much better food nearby, at nearly the same low cost, head a couple blocks south west to Wilson and Wolcott and visit Sabor A Cuba. I'm not saying don't patronize El Taco Loco. It's fine for late night dining and when you have to have Mexican and you're short on time or distance from the neighborhood.

When it became imperative that getting fit had to be integrated into my ancient 40 years of half couch abuse, and half utter gourmet indulgence, I looked up on Yelp for a trainer. I have some fairly important goals in 2009, and getting fit is a key to making it a year of transition into a better me.

Oh yes, fitness with Jennifer is changing everything about life for me. She visits me at my gym totally prepared and organized. She brings her own equipment for certain exercises that she planned for me, and she's one super fit rockstar I can trust with my body. What a relief! Someone that makes my workouts targeted, engaging and fun.

I mean, it's important to me to have faith in the person I hand myself off to for fitness. I was wary of people who seem to push other things, but someone that specializes in pre and postnatal fitness? Smart. Awesome. She is nutritionally aware, and her persuasive technique is about life transforming, as in: let's bring the inner 'fit self' out of this current body.

Within weeks, my strength improved and I lost several pounds. I'm shedding pounds and her exercises are focused on the areas of my body that has made an instant impact on the way I look. I can personally attest to the fact that after work with Jennifer, I'm way more noticeable (in a positive way) - and I love that! Wouldn't you?

I feel wonderful and working out with Jennifer has given me my life back. I'm someone having higher and achievable goals with her. I'm determined as ever to make them and I look forward to each workout as an investment in my future self. That's exciting to me. I seriously can't recommend her enough.

I've been here more times than I can count with Eric, my "we'll have a gay old time" friend. This is the first gay bar I ever set foot in. After several other gay bars I've gone in, this is just the best I've seen. I would go and enjoy it anytime even if I don't hit on chicks and the guys ignore me. Actually, some of the guys don't!
