Asian Pearl

Category: Dim Sum

3 star rating
 2/9/2010
Food came out faster than I expected considering there weren't any carts going, but I didn't really enjoy it. Mayflower at Great Mall is better IMO. The food is tastier, better in quality, and fresher there. Asian Pearl looks much nicer, but I really wasn't a fan (ate dim sum, btw).

Also, I'm familiar with Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants where the servers don't speak much English, but this was the first time that someone seemed offended that I didn't speak their language - they INSISTED on repeating things in Chinese even when I didn't know what they were saying. Sorry that I only LOOK Chinese!

Dear Guy-With-Mohawk,

Thanks so much for helping me pick up a 6 foot fake bamboo tree for my mom! Sorry that I made you lift 3 of them from storage just so I could inspect them. I'm even sorrier that I changed my mind at the register and made you move the ladder across the store to get me another one! My mom loves it, though, and I really appreciate the help!

...also...

Dear Lady-At-The-Register,

Thanks for honoring the sale price for said bamboo tree even though the sale ended the day before. My mom had been eying the tree for quite some time and was waiting for the price to drop. She couldn't be happier.

...and...

Dear Guy-Who-Carried-It-To-The-Car,

You were so nice and helpful! Thanks for making sure that the tree was stored away safely :)

Sincerely,

Juliana

Lanna Thai Restaurant

Thanks Tiffany C. for bringing me and Cathie U. to Lanna Thai! I didn't know what to expect when Tiffany C. suggested this place but I went along because I hadn't seen her in a while. Let me tell you, I was enamored with the cute little restaurant. The decor is very clean and modern, but reflects traditional Thai culture as well. Tiffany told me that all of the beautiful paintings were done by the owner herself!

Service wise I don't think I've ever seen a cleaner restaurant. Not only were the tabletops and glasses spotless, but I saw one waitress wiping down chairs - down to the legs and all - in her spare time. The servers were very attentive and exceptionally nice.

On to the food! My Thai iced tea was delicious - sweet, creamy, and indulgently heavy on the tea flavor. Dishes we had:

- Pad Ke Mao Spaghetti: Cathie U chose this and I was a little wary. I didn't think I'd like the spaghetti noodles at all and was very surprised to find that I loved this dish! We got it spicy and with chicken. Yummy yummy. The spice does build up though!
- Green Curry: Flavor wise, this was very good. A little heavy on the coconut milk for my taste but still great tasting.
- Paradise Seafood: I think this is what it's called. It's a mix of squid, mussels, scallops, and shrimp with basil, chili, and eggplant. Probably my favorite dish!

These three things along with our jasmine and surprisingly delicious brown rice made for a fantastic lunch. Can't wait to introduce others to this great restaurant!

Kentucky Fried Chicken

Why am I reviewing a fast food chain restaurant? Because this one has truly great customer service. My mom loves fried chicken and asked me to pick some up for her tonight. I was really surprised to be greeted really warmly by the friendly girl at the register and even more surprised when she asked for my name to call out my order instead of giving me a number. My order came out really quickly and I didn't have to ask for hot sauce because the girl that prepared it asked me first! Woohoo!

My weekend trip to Reno did not start out well as the BF's car died a few miles out and much of our first day was spent figuring out towing, repair options, and how the heck we were supposed to get home.

When we finally did get to the hotel, we were really excited about our free upgrade to a suite! The suite itself was really nice - huge with floor to ceiling windows and a hot tub. Outside of the room, however, the hotel was less impressive. Clearly this place had once been majorly cheesy (think neon lights, fake plants, loudly patterned carpet) and was trying unsuccessfully to modernize. Not that big a deal, but definitely not what I was expecting from one of the city's top hotels.

Later on that first night, the BF and I decided to head down to the arcade to pass some time. This was a super creepy experience as the arcade was completely deserted but all the games with their loud sound effects and seizure-inducing flashing lights were going at full blast.

It may have been out of the hotel's control, but I just didn't have a good time. I found that there was little to do (even tried walking outside the hotel but the streets were empty) and I couldn't wait to get back home!

My amiga Cindy N. LOVES coming here. Whenever she's back in town, I can always count on a trip to Bar Code for some milk tea, snacks, and quality catching up time. It's a laid back place to hang out and the snacks/drinks are good! Love the popcorn chicken/octopus and the curry ketchup.

Don't know what the bad reviews are for! Not saying that it's exceptional, worth going out of your way for, or particularly unique but it's a solid place for drinks and snacks.

Yummy yummy crepes and shaved ice in a cozy-cute little shop. I always try to stop by after dinner in Japantown...except I've only been successful approx 1 out of every 4 times because of the odd hours. On the occasions when I was able to catch it open, the orders took a whiiiiiiiile. I don't mind the wait too much because I love the shaved ice, but I brought my niece here once and she was antsy antsy antsy! Luckily, she liked watching them make the shaved ice through the window so the trip wasn't ruined!

Vip Oriental

My cousins LOVE this place. Why? The staff is super nice, the environment is really laid back, and soju cocktails are delicious. VIP is definitely not where you go if you want to impress someone, but if you want to get your drink on without worrying about dressing up, being judged, etc...this is it! It gets crowded and can be a sausage fest, but if you get there early and get a table you won't have to interact too much with the crowds.

Only critical comment: Change up the playlist! It's months old and consists of approx 5 songs!

This was my first Yelp even ever! I was way worried about the crowds and came prepared to jostle for food and drinks. I was ever so pleasantly surprised to find that food and drinks were easily accessed and everyone (mostly) was courteous. The staff (Yelp and vendors) was super nice and I never felt rushed.

The only downside was the line for the photobooth! The guys manning it were really friendly, but there was a lot of confusion about where the food line ended and the photo line began. There should have been a Yelp staff person managing traffic in that room.

Otherwise, great event!

 Update - 1/29/2010
Whoa whoa whoa, gotta update and give The Boiling Crab a little bit of a downgrade! The food is still really good and an experience not to be missed, but I was really disappointed that I couldn't even call in an order earlier tonight! I tried every minute for 15 minutes to get through but got a busy signal the entire time. Are you telling me they don't have call waiting, a hold function, or more than 1 line or something?! Gotta do something about that crowd control. Yea, they're super busy esp. on a Friday night, but if they've got a continuous stream of waiting customers every night I'm sure they have enough money to 1) get another phone line or better system, or 2) have someone just to manage the phones - even if the scenario, worst case, is that they're too busy to take togo orders someone should still answer.

Dudes, the wait is part of the experience! Yea, it's ridiculous and a lot of times inefficient, but what can they do if they only have a certain number of tables and a line out the door? Okay, move...but it's not that easy! They've probably thought about it and if it works for them, then they'll do it.

How do I deal with an almost two hour wait?
    - Park car
    - Go to Target
    - Buy individually packaged boxed wine (rec. the cab/merlot or sangria, but not the white wine)
    - Drink to heart's content

That or bring beers with you (Target does not have refrigerated beer)!

Food is awesome, as everyone has said.
The service is super friendly and mostly great (except for the host and his wait times, of course)

    Just don't overeat or
    1) your stomach will punish you
    2) you won't feel like eating another crawfish again for months
