Smoothie King

Category: Juice Bars & Smoothies

3 star rating

I went here only because I had a coupon.  I frequent Jamba Juice but the coupon was enough to get me to try it.  The place doesn't seem very crowded ever but they somehow stay in business.  Going into this place is like walking into a Jamba Juice + GNC.

They have  wide variety of flavors, I'd say about 40-50 which is 2x that of JJ.  The prices are at least as high as JJ if not a little more.  Smoothie King uses serious health nut ingredients.  It's not just low-calorie sweeteners, fat-free yogurt, and fruit.  They have protein boosters, Myoplex, turbinado and the like.  These supplements and additions often have a slightly strange taste, but if you're committed you'll get used to it.

Ever had duck jerky?  You can get it at Smoothie King.  Although I can't imagine why you'd want to.

Babies R Us

Agree with John O, this place is depressing.

They have pretty bad customer service and the employees are not at all happy to be working at a baby store.  They're not mean or jerks, just not customer-friendly.  They seem to be perpetually understaffed.  Either that or only 2 of the 10 people working there at any time have cash register training.

It's pretty depressing inside with a somewhat meager selection.  Fortunately I've only ever been in there to get gift cards.  You wouldn't believe how long it took me to get a GC last time.  11 minutes in line and 6 minutes at the register because gift cards are apparently not in the basic training.

Meh.

Went here on the way to LA.  It was hot out and this was a welcome oasis.  The service is good, the people are friendly, the bathrooms are clean, but the employees need to air out a bit after their smoke breaks.

Taco Bell

Yeah I go to Taco Bell sometimes.  There, I said it.  It's cheap and somewhat tasty and you know what to expect when you go to any one of them around the US.  I was driving home and it was late and I was starving.  Any place that encourages obesity by claiming there is a "fourthmeal" doesn't ever warrant more than 3 stars.

Nevertheless this was a quicker service Taco Bell than what I'm used to, and the portions are bigger.  Above that, the "burritos" are not sloppily made.

Run for the border.  These can wreak havoc on your digestive tract.  Yeah I'm running alright, but that ain't the border.

Thrifty Car Rental

Getting the car is relatively painless as is bringing it back.  A bit of a line but it moves quickly.  It is a bit confusing where to go in or where the cars come out.  I say this because I was dropped off and it was a mini-adventure dropping me off and tailing me once I got out of the lot.

Thrifty had some pretty decent prices but they pushed pretty hard on the upgrades once I got there.  Still, a relatively painless experience.

Bonjour Crêpe Company

Categories: Creperies, Desserts

3 star rating

It's hard to find crepe places in the Bay Area.  There are decent ones like Crepevine, Sophie's, and Crepes-a-go-go, then there are great ones like Ti Couz, Coupa Cafe, and Bistro Maxine.  Bonjour had some promise as one of the few crepe places in the South Bay.

Bonjour tries to be very hip with a Twitter account and movie nights in the place.  It's a very new place so I appreciate and understand their attempts to generate interest and business.

The crepes are decent.  They are fairly large but that doesn't offset the average quality of the crepes.  Crepe batter is hard to make--much like kathy d said--and it was apparent the employmees were fairly new.  I'll give them another chance but it's a bit pricey for a large albeit average crepe.  Still, nothing else down that far south, so this will satisfy my crepe urges for the time being.

Arya Global Cuisine

So I'm not the only one with some temerity dining at a place that boasts Persian, Italian, and American cuisine.  I've been here 3 times and have stuck to the Persian food.  The decor is cozy and the place is quite large so there is always room during our group lunch outings.

The prices are decent and the sizes of the dishes are pretty large.  The quality is hit or miss, but nothing has been bad so far.  Our group had the sample platter, beef/chicken koobideh and fesenjoon.  The koobideh plates are tasty and the roasted tomato is great, but there is a lot of rice and it isn't fantastic.  The fesenjoon has a great flavor and should definitely be tried.

I could go here a few times a year, but again I'd stick to the Persian food.

Paris Baguette

Category: Bakeries

4 star rating

Santa Clara always had Korean pastries, but it was not until Paris Baguette came onto the scene that Norcal could hold a candle to Koreatown in LA.  This place is packed but they do a good job of keeping the line moving.  If you're there for pastries, just get in line with a tray and paper and keep moving.  If you're there for the shaved ice, you'll be lucky to get a table.

Those shaved ice dishes are no joke.  The "mini" can serve 2-3 full-grown adults.  It's chock full of flavor and cream and is just so good.  It's a huge hit for the kiddies.  And ladies.

Love this place for a quick snack after grabbing a satisfying lunch or dinner.

John's Philly Grille

Went here with Clara K a few weeks ago.  We split a full mushroom cheesesteak with diced hot peppers on the side and a order of cheese fries.  This was the perfect amount of food for two people.  The meat and onions were great but the bread was missing something.  It was too good, too soft, too spongy.  It needs a bit more bite to it like a true roll from Philly.

I also ordered an orange creme soda which would have been great if it was more carbonated and colder.  The cheese fries were steak fries with melted provolone on top.  They also had seasoned salt.  It was pretty good but I sort of wished for liquid cheese whiz.

The service was good and the people were polite, but it took awhile to get our food.  We enjoyed the meal but it certainly wasn't a 4.

Nice and big B&N that is two stories.  Parking is a bear but the place is ncie.  The bathrooms are clean and the staff is very friendly.  Went here for my friend Cindy's book reading and signing.  Big ups to them for hosting this and having a space upstairs to seat almost 30.

Not a lot of places to sit and read but the selection is great.
