Momofuku Noodle Bar

Category: Restaurants
Neighborhood: East Village

5.0 star rating
1/4/2010
I came here for dinner last night at around 9:30 p.m., and was seated instantly, at the noodle bar itself. I ordered the $30 prix fixe and added on the pork buns based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews here on Yelp (which, though I've had better, ended up being a great choice).

The first two courses (of three) consisted of thinly-sliced duck breast in cranberry sauce and some pretty salty breaded skate (which might have just been the furikake seasoning). These were so-so. The third course, however, was menu-shattering: thinly-sliced hanger steak and ginger-scallion fried rice with a fried egg over the top. It was wonderful and carries the weight of the five stars all on its own. And it didn't hurt that dessert was candy cane soft serve (my favorite).

I ended up talking to the two women next to me (who were, by their own admission, "eye-raping" my last course), and who recommended the Momofuku Noodle Bowl, which I am certainly getting the next chance I have to splurge a little on dinner. The best part is that by the end of it all, I was just perfectly full. What a great feeling. And since I was on my own (saying that I was "alone" sounds incredibly lame, probably because it *is*), the servers sent over some tiny complimentary dishes like an apple/molasses/peanut butter palette-warming concoction before the meal and an oatmeal cookie ball with dessert.

All that said, this place seems like it is definitely a good option for decent-sized groups and feels overall like Wagamama except way more authentic and a lot tastier. Fantastic food, really quick service (I could barely ever drain my water glass to half-full before it was filled again), and the price is right. Will certainly return.

New York Burger Co

Categories: Burgers, American (Traditional)
Neighborhood: Flatiron

Let me start out by saying that I *love* a good burger. To me, a good burger and good fries are on par with finding $20 in your pocket (that might be used to pay for said burger/fries--double whammy). And let me also say that I really wanted to like this place, for two reasons: a. because they came with a great recommendation from a colleague; and b. because the storefront looks super trendy and has caught my eye before.

With that said, maybe I will not do New York Burger Co. justice in this review because I only ordered the plain "New York Burger" and I only dipped my fries in the "NY Burger Sauce"; but honestly, I feel like any burger joint's eponymous offerings should be pretty damn good. Seriously, they should probably be the best things on the menu. As such, I am very disappointed to report that when I tried NYBCo. tonight for the very first time... I was really underwhelmed.

I will give them credit for their vast array of dipping sauces (which is impressive even if they all suck as much as the NY Burger Sauce), and for the fact that they have an Elvis burger on the menu (which, for the uninformed, is a burger with banana and peanut butter; a similar and excellent offering can be found at the Boston Burger Co. in Somerville, MA; and yes, it's kind of bizarrely coincidental that the only two places I've ever seen a "King" burger are both "Burger Cos." named after the big city they're in or near).

Anyway, the burger I received was poorly assembled (e.g. the under-ripe tomatoes were located outside the bun); the meat patty itself was kind of bland; and the fries were inconsistent and kind of soggy even though they were ten-seconds-fresh. Not to mention the tables up front were covered in trash and the bright lights made the whole joint feel kind of like a McDonald's playplace.

Maybe they're better for lunch, and I'll probably make it here again with coworkers, but overall New York Burger Co. was a decently big letdown. Shucks.

Vocelli Pizza

We are staying in a hotel near by.  Desk provided the menu, we ordered, delivery took over an hour.  Food was warm, but it looked like it had been kept alive 'barely' for a while.  It was obviously old, greasy and not very good.  We called later to complain (we are out of town guests, so we have no benefit or motive for slamming them, just wanted them to know we were not pleased) - the manager copped an attitude, told us that our pizza had been delivered in 35 to 45 minutes (wrong), and that we were the only people who had ever complained about his food.  Wrong again, as evidenced by comments here and feedback from the front desk.

We have had pizza delivery many times, our expectations are not high, we were simply tired and hungry.  But this was so bad, and the service so poor, that we feel we have to pass the word.

Avoid this place.

BerryLine is SOLID.  Fairly hip and fairly urban, but with really good frozen yogurt.  I've been about three times now and my favorite is the banana yogurt with kiwi and strawberries on top.  I also enjoy the artwork on the walls and painted outside, but the absolute coolest thing about this place is that it's on Arrow Street.  Which intersects Bow Street.  As in, Bow and Arrow Streets. . .  And, well, the frozen yogurt's FANTASTIC, too.

Pomodoro

Neighborhood: North End

5.0 star rating

Here's how Pomodoro works:  The people who run this restaurant know that they have the best food in the North End.  The people who visit this restaurant *should* know that they're having the best food in the North End.  And that's really all it takes.

Hands down, dinners at Pomodoro are among the most incredible dinners I've ever had.  In fact, there's almost nothing better than a nice night at Pomodoro with friends followed by a trip across the street to Cafe Vittoria.  At Pomodoro, I enjoy the seafood fra diavolo, the basic pasta, or the seared chicken breast (the noodles are fantastic).  The antipasto is also very fresh and the calamari with red sauce is GREAT.

For some reason, a few other Yelpers just don't get it.  After reading some of the other poor reviews, here are my recommendations for an amazing night at Pomodoro: bring along a few friends, arrive on time but prepared to wait (it's a small space and the food is great, remember), DO NOT wait inside the doorway (because you let the draft in and there's not very much room inside), be polite and respectful of your waiter (this is probably most important), and order your wine by the bottle (personal favorite: Primitivo Flaio).

Most of all, though, just go in with a great attitude and enjoy yourself--that way, you won't be disappointed.

Little Steve's House of Pizza

Category: Pizza

5.0 star rating

I don't know how many times I've been to late-night Little Stevie's, drunk or sober. And the pizza is so good, it's probably the only reason I will ever drag myself outside at two in the morning.

One time I was in on an apparently not-very-busy night, wearing an MIT hoodie with my friends, and Billy behind the counter (who makes the best pizza) asked us if we would fix his laptop for lifetime pizza. Of course we obliged, but I think the next day he got really sick or something, and I haven't seen him since.

Oh well, I'll gladly pay often for pizza this tasty---perfect sauce, large slices, the crust is amazing. Really, you can't go wrong. But be careful when it gets busy, because Little Stevie's becomes the Soup Nazi equivalent of the pizza world. Just stand where they tell you and you'll be fine. Or, you just won't get your pizza.

Five stars because the current average of three simply does not do this fine establishment justice.

"This Pad Thai is AMAZING."

Probably my favorite Thai restaurant in Cambridge. I walked over from campus with some friends last term, and was really impressed, but couldn't remember the name (Peking Sky...?) or location to go back! Finally found it again on Yelp and we just ordered in lunch. Still just as mad tasty as I remembered.

I recommend the Pad Thai and the spring rolls.
Apparently the crab rangoon is also very good.

AND... you can find a menu on allmenus, since they don't have a web site:
