Hank's Ice Cream Parlor
Category: Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt
Neighborhoods: Braeswood Place, Medical Center
For only $5 per person, they will deliver ice cream to your site and set it up to serve your group. What a bargain! This is the best stuff in town!
Hank himself delivered my ice cream today. And what a character he is! You won't be disappointed with Hank's Ice Cream. Just try it!
I visited on a Monday night and found Thai Siam to be very quiet. Only two other tables of diners were there the whole time I dined. (Less than 20 tables in the whole restaurant.) The decor was very welcoming. It was modern and simple, like a little piece of zen with candlelight, greenery, and Asian-inspired statuettes and figurines around the one room.
For a starter, I ordered the Tom Kha Kai. It's always nice when this soup can be made vegetarian! There was a good mix of veggies in the soup that made it feel healthy and fresh. The veggies were sliced in a fun way, not just your regular ole' looking veggies.
As the main course, I selected the Veggie Kee Mao. There are a couple things that made Thai Siam's Kee Mao slightly different from the Kee Mao I'm used to. There were little little pieces of cilantro and lettuce in it. The cilantro added just enough of a taste that was something different from usual, in a good way. The lettuce didn't really have any flavor of its own, but I suppose it added a bit more green. Another difference was that slightly thinner noodles were used than what I'm used to. Thinner than typical Pad Thai noodles. Not necessarily a bad thing, just different. It makes me wonder what is traditional or authentic for this dish!
There was also a good mix of veggies and tofu with the noodles. These veggies were also cut quite artistically, which made it more aesthetically pleasing. The taste was good, though slightly greasy.
Good vegetarian options and, more importantly, good flavor and value. Come here for a simple and tasty Thai meal in a pleasantly simple atmosphere. Think: fun and fresh!
I went to this Montana's for lunch today and had the Mediterranean veggie burger (which comes with goat cheese and roasted red peppers), with guacamole added. You get a choice bun: white, wheat, or ciabatta, and also a choice of potatoes: baked, mashed, regular fries, or sweet potato fries. I'm sure you can guess which I chose... sweet potato fries! They were crinkle cut, which is unusal for sweet potato fries, but still delicious.
My lunch partner for today had the Greek Salad with chicken. It was a good size and looked very delicious. It also came with a piece of corn bread.
The service started off good, but we seemed to be forgotten after the food arrived, which became annoying when waiting for the check. The restaurant was mostly empty since we came for a late lunch, so this was mildly annoying.
The veggie burger patty itself was one of the largest I've seen at a restaurant.
I was impressed with the number of vegetarian selections. While not overwhelming, there were definitely a greater number of choice than the average comparable US chain-restaurant.

Miller Outdoor Theatre
Categories: Performing Arts, Music Venues
Neighborhood: Museum District
I have seen a few shoes at Miller Outdoor Theatre this summer, and am glad to have had the experience.
Lessons Learned:
- Come early! The parking can be hectic, and the lawn area fills up surprisingly fast. So come earlier than you think you need to.
- And speaking of arriving early, be sure to bring some food/snacks and beverages! Pack your picnic dinner so you have something to do since you arrived so early. Plus you'll want some snacks and perhaps some wine while you're enjoying the show!
- The reserved seating area can be quite warm when the breeze isn't coming from the right direction. Instead of getting reserved seating again, I simple choose to come early and get a good spot in the lawn instead!

Shiva Indian Restaurant
Categories: Caterers, Indian, Pakistani
Neighborhood: West University
I've always left Shiva happy in terms of the food that I had the pleasure eating.
On the other hand, the service can be quite slow (that's a nice way of describing it...). Also, the decor is dated, as was mentioned below. But, it is the food that will keep me going back!
The lunch buffet is a good value-- under $10 for all you can eat. Usually there are 2-3 curries or meat dishes, plus another 2-3 vegetable dishes, plus some fruit and puddings for dessert, as well as fresh naan off the tandori brought straight to your table.
If you don't leave Shiva with a satisfied belly, you're doing something wrong. The food is great, and won't break the bank either.

Sotiris Authentic Greek Cuisine
Category: Greek
The main room has vaulted ceilings, some columns, and some (fake, I think) lemon trees and grass in planter boxes.
There is an area behind the main room with murals of Greek islands on the walls, which are pleasant to look at. And there is a large room for groups and banquets that is also well-appointed.
I ordered the Spanokopita Dinner. It comes with a Greek Salad and garlic bread, as well as a side of potatoes and rice. The garlic bread was fantastic! Who knew something that sounded so mundane would steal the show?
The spanokopita is "homemade" and was very good. It tasted fresh, and it had a unique tangy-ness that is not present in all spanokopita samplings I have enjoyed in my lifetime. It came out of the oven piping hot, and was definitely a good selection.
The rice was like a pilaf with small pieces of vegetables (carrots, celery, etc.) that complemented the buttery tenderness of the rice itself. The potatoes were solid quality. But probably nothing special that I'll remember for years to come.
I found the portion of my food was quite large, as were all the plates of the diners near me. This place definitely has good food without any pretentiousness about it.
The service was friendly and fast.
I was close to giving Sotiri's 4-stars, but think I should go back and try some more dishes for confirmation.

Hunan Village Restaurant
Category: Chinese
Neighborhood: Montrose
I frequently get take-out from Hunan Village, but actually just returned from dining in tonight. I agree with Angela S. who described the restaurant as "inconsistent". Sometimes, when I place my take-out order by phone I am told that the chef won't make substitutions on a particular dish. Other times, there is no issue with making the substitutions.
The food is usually very tasty. I do remember being dissatisfied with dumplings on one occasion, but it was Chinese New Year, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they were just busy.
Whether you're vegetarian or not, you need to try the General Tso's Vegetarian Chicken (VD2). This dish is AMAZING and will make you want to come back for more. It is served with some broccoli and snap peas.
For a noodle dish, you must try House Special Noodles (N8), which is wide flat rice noodles in amazing sauce. It comes with a variety of meat and shrimp, but can be made vegetarian on the whim of the chef or person taking your order. A little greasy, but very enjoyable. This is what comfort food is about!
The vegetarian menu is a pleasant size, and they also offer brown rice at no extra charge.

Arturo's Uptown Italiano
Category: Italian
Neighborhood: Rice Military
It looks like an old steakhouse, has large portions at larger prices, and seems like the place to go if eating at the Olive Garden is beneath you.
As an appetizer, there is a crab cake on the menu for $14.50. It is advertised as giant, but is no bigger than average, except in terms of the price. Come on! One crab cake for as much as a whole dinner at many other restaurants!
The food was tasty, but I'm not one who enjoys blowing my money unnecessarily. There are far better Italian restaurants in Houston for less than what you would pay here.

SRO Sports Bar & Café
Categories: Nightlife, American (Traditional)
Neighborhoods: Spring Branch, Lazy Brook/Timbergrove
If you're not a Buckeye, I would never recommend you coming here.
The food was mediocre at best (or cold and soggy at worst), and the service was ridiculously slow. It seemed like there was one server for an area with over 100 people watching college football on a Saturday early in the season.
Even if you specifically wanted to go to a dive bar, I would not recommend this place in good faith.
Date

But no, I still don't understand the mass appeal of a place that is just so-so. It is usually pretty loud, frequently hard to find a seat, and the service is nothing to write home about.
If you've never been to the Flying Saucer, go check it out. If you want to get your name on a plate on the wall, join their Beer Club and go back. It is in a convenient location downtown and suitable for any attire or social status.
