Shabu House

Categories: Japanese, Fondue

5.0 star rating
Update - 12/29/2011
Revisiting this over a year later...

Don't waste your time at the Geary location. Their staff is sour & they're sooooo stingy on the meat. Burlingame's the place to go and they have more room.

I think you get it. Meat. Swish. Eat.

What sets it apart is the service and staff the assist you and the amount of food you get. It may get hectic when there are only 3 servers navigating the entire restaurant, but why are you complaining? It's instant eating.

Shabu House has quickly earned my top ranking for best Shabu. Previously, DT San Mateo's Shabuway held the title, but let me just list the reasons why it's been bested.

    1. Bigger means better. Tons of tables, long bar, an extended room in the back. This means I can eat out with more than 3 people when I want some Shabs.
    2. Choice of meat. Holla - you have your choice of Lamb, Beef and now Pork (+ points for the lovely server who allowed a patron across me to try the pork for free when he even offered to buy a side)
    3. Udon comes stock. Shabuway recently removed the free noodles and charge extra if you want udon, even more if you want ramen. Shabu house comes with it for free.99.
    4. Flavor Variety. Water, Spicy Miso, Ginger Chicken. Okay.. Shabuway has this too but I don't think they have Ginger Chicken... not that I'd pick that flavor anyway.
    5. Veggie Variety. Spinach is stock and so is a big ass mushroom. More veggies than SW.
    6. Ice Cream! Free scoop of either green tea or mango. Nuff said.nly
    7. All you can eat options. I'll only do it in combination with unlimited drinking...

So now that the baddest shabu bitch on the block has made it's appearance in the peninsula, Shabuway either should be shatting in the pants or making some necessary changes to start competing against this spot. Maybe they already have, but this already is a winner in my book.

Imagine. You only have 3 days in Chicago and it's your first time visiting and you gotta get everything in those 3 days (Wrigley, Sears, Deep Dish, the Bean, Chi Style Dog, Michigan Ave, Jordan Statue, 2nd City...etc etc ETC)...

I SPENT 5 HOURS IN THIS DAMN STORE.

So me and 3 of my ladies walk in and are intrigued. It's like a upscale F21 with Zara prices and selling premium denim. So here we are perusing the racks of clothes... a lovely person (Cynthia) approaches me and takes the clothes from my hands and prepares a fitting room for me. Fantastic. Ready to try on my pickings, I walk into my fitting room with my choices, but denim and other suggestions she made based on what I initially selected also were sitting in the room for me. Smart, Akira, smart. Trying to upsell me with your premium Hudson and 7 for all Mankind Jeans - I will not cave!

So there I am trying on clothes, enjoying every minute... and what happens next? Cynthia (who I eventually, after 5 hours in the damn store start to lovingly refer to as my personal minion) appears with MORE clothes for me to try on. This ensues for like 2 hours... my girls and I (who also had a minion of their own) had hangers upon hangers upon hangers of clothes that were ready for purchase.

Then my minion starts creating outfits for my ladies... and then we were there for so freakin long another minion's shift ended... so $1000s of dollars later between the 4 of us, we walked out fulfilled.

So they're not MINIONS, they're stylists... but wow, for their superior service and attention to detail of our own personal style to more than convince me to stick around for 5 hours out of our already full agenda of eating and exploring our way through Chicago... that speaks volumes.

So next time I'm in Chicago, I know to tack on an extra day just for this spot.

I was pretty excited to see this place and on the way I was chewing gum to get mark my territory on the famous wall

Then I got there and got disgusted at the sight and smell of chewed gum and saliva. Stuck my piece of gum, took some photos and headed out.

Definitely a unique sight to see.

Really pleased with the service. I was so doubtful and felt like I had to call the night before and 5 minutes before the cab was scheduled to arrive. The friendly Taxi Dispatcher was kindly confirmed my appointment for me.  When I called at 5:45 (5 minutes before the scheduled arrival), he told me he was 2 minutes away. He called back in 2 minutes and said he was driving up and voila...

So I'm headed to the airport again this Friday and already made my appointment. Had the same dispatcher -- friendly as always and hopefully this will be the same quick and prompt service as last time.

It's very cafeteria-esque but the idea is very cool. So many options, I can probably go here multiple times and have something different.

My first visit I got the Sweet Alaskan rice bowl. Pretty tasty and lots of toppings that you would normally find in a $10 Whole Foods sushi rice bowl. Crab (fake), Avo, Shrimp Temp, Salmon, Seaweed Salad and a sweet chili sauce. Very tasty, I should have made it a salad bowl to make it healthier.

As far as the options:
Japan: Rice bowl, salad bowl, big roll
India: Wraps, Rice Bowls
Vietnam: Rice/Noodle Bowls, Bahn Mi's

MYO options too which are awesome and everything is 8 bucks. Also download the Stampt app and after 10 stamps you get a free $8 credit. Not too shabby.

A great new lunch spot to venture out to.

So I came on Monday and was pushed out because of a private party... and TODAY I HEAR IT CLOSED?!

WTF

This was seriously one of the first reviews I wrote on Yelp and one of my staples in SF for burgers.. I don't know what to do with myself.. I'm at a loss for words.

Reunited and if feels so good...

It's been maybe a year since I've been back. The menu's changed a bit... they no longer have the Build Your Own.. but the food is still delightful. Parking still sucks.

We came in today and it was pretty busy at 1pm. But just like the Diner Dash game, Darla's got skills. She totally remembers everything and works her time management effortlessly.

New thing the boyfriend tried: Cheeseburger Club. It's basically a club sandwich with burger as the protein. He really liked it. Also, Darla's has an option to add Onion Rings for $1. They looked good...

It places like these where I have City Withdrawls...

I LOVE Darla's. I hate the parking. But aside that, their burgers are juicy, tasty and perfect. I always get Jack, Shrooms and Peppers and am never disappointed. Their fries are great, and I love their salad for some reason. I always assume it's cause I love a salad that's made by anyone besides me...

Plus free brownies. You can't beat that.

And fun fact: Darla's helped create Diner Dash 2 -- you can find it on Yahoo games.

Sushirrito

Bravo on the concept and even bigger bravos for getting their hype as infectious as the plague. Of course you gotta try it right? I coulda sworn I was standing in line behind Ruggy J. at 10:55 am days after it's grand opening next to Crunch Gym and the sales reps trying to capitalize on free passes as we wait to eat the monstrous terror that is Sushirrito. 30 minutes later, I had a Latin Ninja getting made in their narrow assembly line and magical machine that flattens out the rice.

I have to say it wasn't the most absolutely mindblowing thing ever. That, I'd save for possibly the Cheeseburger at 4505 Meats... but was it good and filling? You betcha -- decent and it is what it is.. a majorly oversized maki with fancy ingredients. My only gripe? The rice. There are few very al dente pieces and that was not enjoyable. Would like to taste more rice vinegar as well.

I've gone back to experience the Ebi roll, which was also decent.. however if I am paying $10.50, it would be nice to maybe up the ante and offer some real crab, no?

Would I go back? Probably... especially now that the hype has died down and it's easy to get a roll early or late into the lunch rush..But not my first choice of eats.

So yea... a hybrid of Sushi in the size of a burrito... what a concept! but in the end. I wish I either had Sushi or a Burrito - not a combo of the two.

What a cute store on the outside. But seriously, who was I to believe that a delicious, moist cupcake was hiding in the Newark Commons shopping center?!  That's preposterous!

Very cute decor. The cupcake recipes they've come up with are very creative and seemed good. I was intrigued by the Oreo Cupcake which actually was ok in flavor - a bit dry, and the icing itself staled out.

But hey, my 2 year old godson, who has no knowledge of the difference between a good cupcake and bad one actually enjoyed it.
