Fourth Wave Coffee

4th Wave is like that coffeeshop that you dream of opening when you retire - run by family members, completely chilled out, and totally reflecting you and your interests. In this case, it's obviously surfing.

I had the good luck of stumbling in before their doors were officially open, and had an awesome chance to meet the owners, Bernie and Brian, who are long-time San Francisco residence and knew this neighborhood back when it wasn't a good idea to be wandering around here. They've managed to turn an abandoned corner into what looks to be a lively and fun place who's doors are open to all. Amazingly, Bernie handmade all the furniture from recycled wood pieces.

What's more, Funky Door Bikram lovers, we finally have a spot to chill before/after classes!

Excited to come back next week for their official opening, and check out their own roasted coffee.

Awesome neighborhood find!

Argo Tea Café

Would you look at that! In the desolate no-man's land of "not-quite-Chelsea-and-not-quite-Midtown-not-quite -anywhere, really", there's actually an innovative, unique, and clearly brave store that recently opened its doors to the poor deprived neighborhood so desperate for something cool.

Argo Tea just opened its 5th store here right across the street from FIT, and I had the luck of passing by it today. Same great space with sofas and free wifi, same great menu of creatively mixed tea-based drinks that are curiously delicious (favorites: mojitea, tea sangria, green tea Ginger twist). And as usual, their display of freshly baked cookies and pastries leave me debating for a few minutes longer than is appropriate. The debate normally involves the chocolate chip cookies (can we say chewy?) and chocolate brownie.

I mean, when was the last time you passed by this part of town and felt any element of excitement?

Argo, it's now in the hands of you and your cute baristas to save this neighborhood! May the powers be with you!

Épicerie Boulud

The latest Daniel Boulud place to grace the Lincoln Center neighborhood! The shop, located on the corner of Broadway and 64th, is stocked with a mouthwatering display of light bites - from terrines, cheeses, and quiches, to delicious sandwiches such as the DBLT with roasted pork belly, and the immediate best-seller Cubano, stuffed with suckling pig.

The pastries section is worth a full several minutes of silent fantasizing. If you really can't make up your mind, I'll suggest the Brioche Suisse - it's out of this world.

Today's only the 'soft' opening, which apparently means that not everything's set up and the oyster bar isn't available... but it also means that Daniel Boulud himself is roaming the shop, welcoming every person to walk in. If I can add an additional star for absolute irrational glee, my 5th star would be for the honor of shaking the hand of the master himself!

Tartine Bakery

Neighborhood: Mission

Tartine came up at least 5 times in the last month in conversations. 4 of those 5 have to do with croissants, where I passionately argued that no one should be able to charge $4.00 for a croissant. The best croissants in NYC are about $3. The croissants fresh from patisseries in Parisien streets cost less than $3 in Euro equivalence.

So Tartine has no right to be the most expensive croissant in the world - no matter how flakey, buttery, light, and wonderfully delicious. I stand by this! Which is why I will always scowl at the price tag while ordering one (or two, or more). And then I'll proceed straight to completely losing myself in its soft, creamy, and heavenly creaminess.

Mission Chinese Food

ok, so I've had my share of Chinese food in the bay area. This is something else, and really special. Covered in traditional tacky 'authentic Chinese' decor, you'd guess that this is just another fairly decent Chinese restaurant. You're wrong. The Ma Po Tofu tastes both authentic and yet a little better than authentic. West Lake Rice Porridge - again, authentic regional Chinese flavor, and yet, much more special.

I started missing this place a few minutes after I walked out the door. And next time I step foot in the city, you can bet I'll be here again, stuffing my face on deliciousness.

One of my top 10 Chinese restaurants in the country.

Honestly, why is this space so conveniently located? It's always just a block or two away from me every time i'm out in the middle of the night and hungry for a snack

I will always find some excuse to gravitate to Artichoke. This is bad news for both my tummy, and to my sense of self control. But my tastebuds have been known to do happy-dances.

judging by the other stores I had just walked passed, i'd have guessed that this was some classical furniture store of some kind. but wait! peek down the long entranceway and you'll realize that it's a gorgeously decorated bar, complete with dark cherry wood, red velvet, an frosty mirros. Open the door to enter, and you'll realize that it is pleasantly empty. Only a block away from Union Square but well hidden amongst the random stores on the block, you'll soon realize how great of a place this is to hide from the bustling activities nearby.

There's a great selection of wines by the glass, with a pub-food menu of nibbles to choose from. Our artichoke dip came with lightly toasted pita bread and was delicious!

This is my back pocket spot to rest and rewind whenever I'm in Union Sq.

hm, not sure about the aroma, but for all intents and purposes, this is an a-ok spot to have a block away from my apartment.

dependable coffee, some light morning pastries/mid-afternoon snacks, and enough chairs where you don't feel that bad hogging a seat and mindlessly reading the internet for a few hours on their free wi-fi.

The Best Chocolate Cake In The World

I don't know about the world, but maybe the best chocolate cake in the neighborhood?

That said, the chocolate IS decadent, the coffee IS strong, and the space IS cute. If you can find a free space amongst all of 4 tables there, it'd make a place to stop by, share a bite with a loved one, and then proceed to be on your merry sugar-filled way.

The decor is European - with mirrors, candles, all kinds of daintiness. If I go again, I'll make sure I'm wearing pearls. Lots of them.

Ceci-Cela

After devouring Ceci-Cela croissants for years (from cafes that sourced from the bakery), I finally decided to drop by the actual bakery in Soho to experience it in person.

The space is cramped but cozy. Since there are all of 8 small tables, it'll be a wait to get seated on weekends. But the time is quickly forgotten after smelling the fresh sweet goods. There are a few other pastries/sweets there and the coffee isn't bad.

But whether you want to sit down or take away, hands down best croissants I've ever had outside of Paris!!
