Cabaret Club Le Drague

Categories: Dance Clubs, Gay Bars

Incredible!  And really unlike any club I've seen in the U.S.

Gay culture is apparently much more popular here--this place attracts such a diverse crowd of all ages and sexualities.  We were there Thursday and Friday night for their impressive drag show (all in French, but still incredibly entertaining for us as English-only speakers).

During the show, you might feel a repetitive thumping beneath your feet.  This is coming from the CRAZY-cool discotec downstairs where patrons dance and drink on the dance floor beneath the incredible lighting and a balcony of on-lookers that surrounds the entire space.

And just when you think you've seen everything, you might stumble upstairs into a seriously dark yet friendly leather-esque bar where the more mature and mostly male crowd hangs out.  It was a nice escape from the young folk downstairs. (We honestly thought there were some 16 yearolds there...what's the drinking age in Canada again?)

And guys MUST check up the most unique set of urinals in the world above the leather bar.  There are pictures on the website.  'Nuff Said.

This place is a gem in the middle of an incredibly romantic city.

I was truly impressed.

This is a great brunch spot on weekends--really chill.

And most importantly: everyone should know about Monday night $5 burgers and $5 Fat Tire Beers.  And they have yummy sweet potato fries with these burgers.  And you can get whatever kind of cheese you want on your burger!  Hayyyy!

Beyond this ultra-cheap Monday night meal, they have a very classy menu and of course a large selection of wines (from their "cellars"...get it?)

But I must stress: Monday nights!!

Ruff N' Stuff Pet Center

We're currently attending puppy training class at Ruff N' Stuff.  I can understand how some people are put off by "woman behind the desk"--she is perhaps not most outgoing person, but once you get to know her, you'll realize that she is incredibly kind, helpful and knows SO much about dogs and their behavior.  She won't try to sell you stuff just for the sake of selling.

It may be true that their prices can't compete with Petco or Petsmart, but logically that isn't possible since these chains are the Wal-Marts of pet stores.

I'm glad to support Ruff N' Stuff as a local business and believe that what really counts is that the staff is experienced and honest and cares most about animals and not about profit.

P.S. I also recommend her training classes--she is hardcore! no treats, which makes it more difficult but better in the long run.

Busy little spot with a nice patio, modern/comfortable furniture and an honest and hip,  yet not too trendy execution of an independent coffee shop.  It is what it is. A place to hang out and drink relatively extravagant coffee drinks. Seems to be family friendly--a few young couples there today, one with a stroller.  All kinds of goings on--work meetings, individuals on laptops, friends hanging out.

Delicious coffee.  What Starbucks wishes it could be.

Great atmosphere!  A fellow public school teacher and I just had a pitcher of beer this afternoon after our last day of work before summer vacation.  I can't imagine a more relaxing outdoor space to celebrate another year of teaching than Moody's patio.

We only had fries to eat so I can't fairly judge the food, but the beer was...beer.

I can imagine this is the perfect summer night spot to sit outdoors and enjoy some good company.

Fleet Feet Sports

I found out more about Fleet Feet when I signed up with a half-marathon training group this year with CES (Chicago Endurance Sports).  After a few weeks of increased running in my old New Balance "more-for-looks-than-for-function" shoes, I decided it was time to get some running shoes that would help out my pathetically, flat-arched feet.

It does take a bit of time as they are always busy and take extra time with each customer.  But once your number is called, the associates are extremely helpful and patient.  They first have you take a run in a completely formless shoe to see what kind of support you need. Then they bring out some options based on function rather than appearance.

This was difficult for me, 'cause it turned out that the best shoe for my feet of the three options she offered me was the also the ugliest.  Why oh WHY do they make so many running shoes in WHITE?

Nevertheless, I purchased her recommendation and they've served me very well.

These folk know what they're talking about--come here for all your training needs.

Feldman & Feldman DDS

I found this dental practice when I got new insurance.  They're literally minutes down the street from where I live and the two times I've called for cleaning appointments, they've had openings within the next few days.

This has to be a record for a dentist visit: granted I was the first appointment of the day, but a couple of weeks ago, I had an Monday 8am cleaning/check-up appointment and I was out of there by 8:20!!  Dr. Feldman (the dad, I assume) is extremely easy-going and professional.  He does the cleaning and check-up--the whole deal.

Plus, their office looks like a house, which is unique.  It's right on the corner next to Ann Sather on Broadway.

Not bad at all, considering its location.  I'm not a big fan of Wrigleyville bars in general, but this place seemed to be a classier step up compared to some of the places I've been in.

Granted I was only there for a RedEye event early in the evening, so the normal crowd was not present, but the place was arranged well with decent furniture, a nice bar and modern decor.  The bartenders were kind and classy as well.

If I ended up in Wrigleyville for any reason on a party night, I'd stop at this place simply 'cause I know it's not a complete sports bar nightmare.

MMMM. Ice cream!

Whenever I step into this little shop, I feel like I'm in some kind of quaint, touristy small town shop where people pay way too much for fudge and lollipops, etc.

But the ice cream at this place is straight-up Yum.  No question.

It's maybe a bit expensive, but I'll just say that after a couple of stops at this place, I won't be venturing further down Broadway to "treats"--low fat, shlow shflat.
