Mayfair Diner and Dining Room

Category: Diners

4.0 star rating

My parents grew up in Holmesburg. So when I was a child we always went to the Mayfair Diner if we were visiting my grandparents. I was feeling nostalgic and went back to visit.
I couldn't have been happier. I thought the food was delicious. My husband and I both had a half a chicken dinner. It included a salad and two sides and dessert. The mashed potatoes were good and the rice pudding fabulous. The waitress was friendly.
The diner actually looked better to me than I remember from the 70's. It was brighter and cleaner. I read a lot of bad reviews but for me I had a very positive experience. It was good to go back.

Suburban Diner

My  husband and I recently stopped in for a quick dinner one night. I try to order Greek salads when I eat in diners since so many feature Greek food. I not only had Greek salad but spinach pie as well. The Suburban Diner has a nice selection of authentic Greek meals. The Greek salad was one of the best I ever had. It was chopped up perfectly and looked like brightly colored confetti with red tomatoes and green peppers. It was nicely balanced with feta cheese, onions, olives, and egg. The spinach pie was very good but the presentation was very plain. A big plate with just the square cut of spinach pie. The service was a little aloof but not slow. Everything was served properly. I'll be back and next time I am trying the moussaka.

Garden of Eatin

Since the last review, yes- Garden of Eatin has been remodeled. It is very nicely decorated in warm colors with nice lighting. Also another change is that they are opened for dinner every night. This was news to me since I thought this was strictly a breakfast and lunch place like the last reviewer.
I recently had dinner on a slow snowy night. I had delicious stuffed cabbage that was as good as homemade. It was a very large meal for only $8.95. It included soup, two sides, the entree, and garlic bread. Everything was delicious and the service was very quick and friendly. I go here for lunch quite often but now I will definitely be going back for dinner too.

Amy's Omelette House

I met a friend at Amy's for lunch. We had a long relaxed lunch together and we were never rushed out or hurried along. The menu is enormous. The omelette choices alone are two pages long. We both decided on omelettes. I had a Leprechaun omelette which consisted of ham and spinach (to make it green). It was delicious. It was not greasy and it was a very large size. I like the retro atmosphere and will definitely return.

Bobby's Burger Palace

First let me say how much I love Bobby Flay. He made pumpkin soup with chocolate on Iron Chef and I instantly became a big fan. I have his books, I watch Throw Down, I even visited the Pop Shop because of the show. But his burger palace was a bit disappointing. His name is on the door but after that it is just another burger place.
I traveled nearly thirty miles, got stuck in city traffic, and then waited an hour in line for pretty much the same burger I could have gotten from my local Ruby Tuesday. I think I was expecting food that tasted a little more chef prepared. The selections are unusual enough and definitely got my taste buds curious but basically this is chain food. LIkewise the sweet potato fries are also a good idea but the regular french fries were more like potato sticks. If I lived nearby I would go again but this really isn't was I was expecting. Maybe there was too much hype but I don't think I will be back.

The Paddock at Devon

I ate at The Paddock at around 6 oclock on a Sunday evening. It was pretty quiet and was seated immediately. Maybe the economy is really taking a toll because this looks like the kind of place that should be packed. What I originally ordered was not available so I had Chicken Marsala. It was very good but it was described as medallions. I imagined nugget shaped chicken instead it was very thin chicken breast. Sometimes the super thin chicken breast can be tough but these were not. A small but good portion of mashed potatoes and delicious mixed vegetables.
I am not sure why more people haven't given this place better reviews. I thought the food was good. Perhaps it is The Paddock's own branding or identity. It seems like a beautiful restaurant. But the gaudy TVs ( i guess they're everywhere now)  and the music that played (80's pop) seemed a disconnect to the atmosphere.

I've been to Molly Maguire's for lunch and brunch. Both times it was delicious. I especially liked the squash soup I had for lunch. I love the atmosphere. It feels just like an Irish pub. I will definitely be back.

I have been going to Under the Pier for years. It always has delicious food. The prices are low and the service is fast. I agree with the previous review in that you would not want to judge the food by the appearance of the restaurant. This is a place that only locals would know how good it really is. Now that smoking is banned the only improvement the restaurant needs is to take credit cards. But maybe the understated appearance and cash only policy adds to its quirky charm.

My husband and I had a nice dinner. The food was very good and is traditional Irish. The service was slow. Don't eat here if you are in a hurry-we were not so it was fine. I did get a little thirsty though waiting for a refill. But the atmosphere is amazing! Outside it is brightly painted and cute. Inside it is dark and woody. It feels just like Ireland right down to little glass windows with vintage advertisements. We missed the Sunday night Irish music but a nice mix of music played in the background.

King George II Inn

Category: American (New)

5.0 star rating

I love King George Inn. I love the historic atmosphere and all the wood and creeky floors. Recently my family and I ate there and it was delicious. I started with tomato soup which was unexpectedly somewhat Italian flavored but wonderful. It had bits of zucchini and parmesan cheese on top. My entree was crab cakes with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. It sound simple but the details the chef adds makes it wonderful.  A mildly spicy sauce was swirled on the plate with stacked potatoes and one of the crab cakes on top. The vegetables were extremely flavorful and I am not sure how they were cooked. Grilled or sauted? Not just boiled.
Anyway, I love a quiet peaceful meal with delicious food in an old building. So King George Inn has it all for me.
