Renna's Pizza

Category: Restaurants

2.0 star rating

I was too early to check in my hotel, so I needed a place nearby where I could stop and eat lunch.  I had the lunch special. Two slices and a coke for $6.25, plus tax.  Not a bad price...

However, the pizza crust was stretched real thin.  Not quite the "New York Style" I remember when I visited New York.  You really should eat this with a knife and a fork to avoid the cheese sliding down onto your shirt.  No self-respecting New York is going to his slice of pie with a knife and a fork!

The staff was friendly enough and the place was nice and clean.... the food tasted okay, but didn't live up to my expectations... sorry Renna's!

Bi Ba's Italian Restaurant

Category: Italian

4.0 star rating

Despite my friends telling me that BiBa's was "awful", I decided to give it a shot... and I was actually pleasantly surprised.  The food was actually very good.  Not only did I enjoy my meal once, but I saved a portion of it and enjoyed leftovers the next day!

While I will agree with a previous reviewer that the caesar salad leaves something to be desired, I had a veal parm and it was excellent.  To compare this to Olive Garden, Provino's or Carrabba's just proves how someone with no taste shouldn't be reviewing on Yelp.

This is not standard chain-restaurant fare.  The sauce is very good, but a little thin.  The portions are HUGE, cooked to perfection and very tasty.  The service was a little abrupt, but the price for my portion was just right!

Alleia

5.0 star rating

Ahhhh Alleia, how do I love thee?  Let me count the ways...

The food is superb.  Our server took some time to explain how the chef was trained in Italy and brings his twist to classic Italian dishes.  I was not at all disappointed by anything on this menu.  It is more of an Italian-American fusion than classic Italian.  We really enjoyed a pair of appetizers off the menu, and then I had one of the daily specials.  Plenty of food filled me up in no time!

The place is very nice too.  We were seated in this huge booth with a great view of the open kitchen.  My only regret was not trying a pizza out of the wood-fired oven.  There is a huge family-style dining table in the middle of the restaurant that could easily seat 30 people.

Our service was also excellent.  Our server knew the menu very well and was able to make great suggestions and paired things well with the speciality drinks from the bar.

As others have said, Alleia is a great hidden gem in Chattanooga.  The huge rustic door gives a very "exclusive" feeling when entering the place.  I look forward to my next visit!

Buffet King

I've tried this place a couple of times.  The first time, the food was not great... so before I reviewed it on Yelp, I decided to give it one more shot.

My opinion hasn't changed.  It's truly awful and the buffet is overpriced.  There is a wide variety of foods, and I've tried most of them.  Fried foods aren't crispy... the meats are chewy and only lukewarm at best.  Even the pizza doesn't look very attractive.

The servers do keep your dirty plates cleared and your drink full... so that's why they got two stars.  If you're in a hurry you can get in and out of here quickly... but it will also hit your wallet pretty hard.  Lunch with a soda and an acceptable tip is nearly $11.00

El Meson Restaurante

El Meson just opened up their second location in Hixson.  I decided to stop over here and check it out for lunch.  As I walked in, the place was pretty busy.  I was seated immediately and my drink order was taken immediately.  The staff was very friendly and quick!  I was asked a couple times if I needed anything and the manager came by to check on me too.  That's very impressive considering how busy the place was!  As my drink came out, I was also brought chips and two different kinds of salsa, both of which were very good.

Typical tex-mex menu, but with their own flair.  It's not one of those generic Mexican restaurant menus that all the Mexican places seem to have.  I had the Taco, Burrito, and Enchilada combo, all beef.  Everything came out hot and fresh.  The taco was served on a different plate, keeping it's toppings cool.  The food was great!  I really enjoyed everything.

The service here was excellent and the food was very good.  I would definitely recommend this place to someone looking for a good mexican meal.  I'll be back!

Rib & Loin

A group of my friends likes to meet here for dinner occasionally.  Finally I got a chance to join them.  It's standard, run of the mill BBQ.  There wasn't anything really special about it, other than it was cheap and you get a good sized portion.  It wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't particularly bad either.  The staff was friendly enough and was attentive.  I would eat here again, but only if my friends wanted to eat here.  I don't mind the food, since it's so cheap.

Freebirds World Burrito

This is a great place to come for a burrito!  Chipotle, Moes, Willy's... they got nothin' compared to Freebirds!

While I was standing in line, I was trying to decide what to get.  They have a pretty extensive menu ranging from Burritos to Not Burritos (like Tacos, Burrito Bowls, Salads, and Quesadillas, etc).

I finally decided on a burrito.  They have four sizes of burrito: Hybird, Freebird, Monster, and Super Monster.  Since I was most familiar with a Chipotle, or Moe's, I ordered a Freebird size burrito (which looks about the same size as the other guys).... They really stuff that burrito full!  Every topping imaginable is there, if you want it.  By the time they were through with it, it was bigger around then my forearm!  I thought for sure the wrap was going to burst as he rolled my burrito!  I also picked up some chips and queso as a side item.  I got all that and a soda for under $10 bucks!  What a deal!  I couldn't even finish my burrito.... I couldn't imagine getting a "Monster" or "Super Monster"!

The atmosphere here is very fun, and kinda quirky.... I mean, where else will you see the Statue of Liberty hiking up her skirt to ride a motorcycle while delivering a Burrito? I'll bet this decor of this place was dreamed up one night after smoking a huge bag of... well.. you know.  Speaking of which, that reminds me... they sell Pot Brownies.  I had one and it was really good.  No, not that kind of pot... they are brownies, baked in little pots... like muffins.

The staff is very friendly, funny, and efficient.  They don't waste a lot of time on the line while making your food... so if that line seems really long, just wait, you'll see that it moves quickly!

I picked a nice, clean spot to sit down and while I ate, I took a look at all the tin-foil creations hanging on the wall and all over the place.  There were stick figure characters, flowers, animals, a huge penis... yep, all kinds of tin-foil creations, go ahead, make one and leave it there... they like 'em!

I wish we had a Freebirds here in Tennessee... I will definitely return next time I'm in the area! If you've got a craving for a burrito, go check 'em out!

Cowboys Stadium

Category: Stadiums & Arenas

5.0 star rating
12/7/2009
This review is based on the Cowboys Stadium Tour.  I have not attended a concert or football game here.

In case you hadn't gotten it from the other reviews, let me make it perfectly clear: THIS PLACE IS HUGE!  Our tour guide said that you could fit two of the old Texas Stadium inside the new Cowboys Stadium.  Another fun fact is that the infamous huge HDTV cost $40 million dollars, $5 million more than the original Texas Stadium did in 1971.

We went on a Saturday morning to see the Cowboys Stadium tour.  They run it about once an hour on most days except game day and the day before game day.  The tour is supposed to take about 90 minutes and includes many areas you wouldn't normally otherwise get to see.

Our tour guide was very energetic, knowledgeable and was having fun with the tour.  We walked all over the stadium, from the suites to the press box, from the nosebleeds to the field, and we even got to see Jerry's massive suite (for his guests, not his private box suite), and the Cowboy's locker room.

We learned some interesting facts while on the tour, like the Stadium has over 3,000 flat screen television sets currently and has plans to expand that to 5,000 in the next couple of years.

It is truly an amazing place, and I would like to see a game there sometime just to say I have.

The cost of the tour is relatively inexpensive, considering most things here are not cheap.  Parking was free, and the cost of admission was only $15/each.  If you don't want to or can't shell out the big bucks for a game, you should at least go take the tour to get an idea of the size of this place!

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and was really glad I was able to see Cowboys Stadium.  If I was given the chance to do it again, I absolutely would!

Ladies - One piece of advice if you plan on going on this tour.  Do not bring your purse.  Leave it in your car.  They will not let you take your purse (or any other bags) on the tour.

Tom Thumb Food & Pharmacy

While on my recent trip to Dallas, I needed to pick up some groceries to keep in the hotel room (rather than pay outrageous hotel fees).  I found this Tom Thumb and decided to pull in here for a little grocery shopping.

The aisles were clean and well-lit.  The stock was neatly arranged so that one can located everything easily.  I thought the staff was sufficiently friendly and that the prices were outrageous .  I would definitely shop here on a regular basis if I lived in Dallas.  Overall it's a pretty nice place to shop!

Whataburger Restaurants

Category: Fast Food
Neighborhood: Upper Greenville

The mere thought of my taking a trip to Whataburger country makes my mouth drool....  We just don't have Whataburger here in Tennessee.  I recently visited Dallas on a business trip, and as soon as I got checked into my hotel, I found out where the nearest Whataburger was (the one I'm reviewing) and headed straight there.

It was within walking distance of my hotel, but I didn't know that leaving the hotel, so I drove and then parked a very short distance later in the parking lot.  I headed inside, and I could already smell the Whataburger tasty goodness.

I ordered a Whataburger with fries and a coke.  The cashier/server was attentive, if not friendly.  She got my order right and brought it right out to me as soon as it was ready.  It was every bit as good as I remembered.  The hamburger was cooked just right and there was the right amount of toppings on it.  I really enjoyed that Whataburger and I will look forward to the next time I'm in a Whataburger town for another.

As for this location, it was clean, the employees were attentive,  the food was  great.  I would definitely return here for another meal!
