Flipper's, A Gourmet Hamburger Place

VEGAN ALERT!

Being a hamburger joint, you wouldn't expect a place like this to be friendly to those who don't partake of the animals. Oh, but they are!

All burger options (there are multiple "themes" to choose from) allow a substitution for a veggie patty. I chose to have the Mediterranean-style 'burger with eggplant. Yum! But wait, did I forget something? The buns...

The buns? Vegan. Finally, I don't have to have my veggie patty on sandwich bread!

Listen, if you come from a meat-eating family or group of friends, come here. Everyone will be happy!

This has a great, mellow atmosphere.

I recommend the "Nile Mix" and a little pot of Turkish coffee.

It makes for a lovely, social evening!

The falafel sandwich is at an out-of-this-world orgasm status. As long as you omit the yoghurt, it's vegan and only $4.99!

Update - 4/29/2009
Okay, I have to write another update because I hate seeing the one-star review on my page. I've gathered information about this place and here's my conclusion: it's the bitch with the ponytail that ruins it for everyone!

If ever I tell someone about Crepe, they instantly ask if I've experience the mean, ponytail lady!

Here's why they (finally) get three stars: the food is good, but the "devil who wears a ponytail" is bad!

    SO DISAPPOINTING.

What happened to my lovely behind-the-counter friends? I have made three attempts to eat there, recently, and have been met every time by a vicious, unfriendly, day-ruining woman! Who are you?! Why do you work?! Where are my sweet, vegan oatmeal preparers?!

I'm sure you can imagine my total embarrassment when I took a friend to eat there (after raving about it on our walk over) and then had to experience... well, there really isn't a word for it. Needless to say we left and went to La Boulange.

    So, so saddening.

Love love love love love Crepe o Chocolat.

The service is wonderful. I stood at the glass case for at lease five minutes before making a decision. The lady working was extremely kind and helpful and was completely obliging in helping to make my to-go order vegan-friendly. I was also ordering for a friend via text-message. She was so patient with me and my high-maintenance text message ordering situation.

The oatmeal? Delicious! And it's even served in the afternoon. So if you're craving it around 3:30, they can still whip it up for you. Plus, it's made with dried cranberries, yum! I've never enjoyed oatmeal so much.

The croissant? SPECTACULAR. Pre-veganism, this was my reward for doing well on a test, at my job, etc. Full of butter and carbohydrates, the $4 croissant is worth every penny. It's amazing. Just make sure you have the very friendly employee heat it up for you!

The sandwich my text friend ended up ordering (chicken with gruyere and spinach) was consumed with utter delight, as far as I could see. She inhaled it, really. I'd say the sandwiches are successful, too.

Crepe o Chocolat is a great downtown spot to have breakfast/lunch. It's a little off the beaten path, they take card (!!!), and the food is superb. Need I say more?

This place is so cute! It's really conveniently located and the boys there are quite attractive. I highly recommend the multi-grain loaf. It's delicious and only $3.50!

Tikka Masala

Everyone knows I abhor "chain" restaurants, so you can imagine my shock and dismay when I show up here to meet le boyfriend for dinner.

"Oh, it's so good," he says.

"It's my favorite."

"Malik, the owner, is really sweet."

"They have the best chicken tikka masala." (Uh, hello? Do I care? VEGAN.)

Well, I kinda got put in my place that night. Tikka Masala is really, really good. No matter where I go, I always get the same thing (chana masala), just to make it easier to compare. And while it wasn't the best I've had (you can read my previous reviews to find the best chana masala), I will say I would definitely go back.

It has its pros: extremely inexpensive (my whole meal was $8), a prayer section for your Islam companions, a friendly owner, and ROCKIN' garlic naan. It also has its cons: janky neighborhood, "chain" restaurant label, and I wasn't too impressed with the basmati rice.

My suggestion: if you like chicken tikka masala, go to Tikka Masala (I mean, if the dish is the name of the restaurant, it has to be good, right?). If you want chana masala, go to Punjab on Eddy and Mason. If you want anything else, pay no regard to this review and keep reading :)

Punjab Kabab House

The food is amazing.
They remember who you are (and what you eat, because *cough* you know you always order the same thing at an Indian restaurant).
They don't really close when they say they do.
They're nice to you, even if you're white!

I love Punjab, for many reasons. My best friend took my here a while back and I haven't been able to resist the urge since then. How many times a week can one eat chana masala? Well, let me tell you - it's quite a few.

It has simple decorations and (like every good Indian restaurant) music videos on televisions! The owners/servers/waiters/cooks/family members/and children will all come and talk to you at your table. I've never learned so many interesting things about India! Fuck world history sophomore year of high school. Just go eat somewhere!

Like I said, I ALWAYS get the chana masala, spicy. This white boy doesn't like his shit weak. I complement the entrée with an order of basmati rice (perfectly cooked, always) and a garlic naan. I will say it's not the best garlic naan in San Francisco (that's at Bombay on Market St.) but it is pretty amazing. If I'm feeling really adventurous (or just hungry) I order the vegetable samosa as well. They're delicious! Especially dipped in the unidentified reddish-colored sauce.

My partners in dining always seem to be attracted to the tikka masala. It's amazing. One of these days I'm going to order a tofu tikka masala (yes, along with a chana masala. Hello, it's not one or the other people).

Now let's get down to the price. It's San Francisco, I'm used to a sigh-inducing, mental bank account balance checking bill. Not at Punjab. Two people, tons of food, under $30. Holla!

Eat here, please. The people are nice, give them business. And say, "hi" to me when you come in. You know I'll be there. Eating what? :)

Tacubaya

Being a San Franciscan, it takes a lot for me to venture out into the lands of the "East Bay." Of course you know that old saying how us city folk never cross the bay. Well, Tacubaya has got me wanting to make the trip a little more frequently.

I was afraid, going in, there wasn't going to be anything (with actual flavor) for me to eat. It's so hard to eat out when you're vegan! (I'd rather just cook at home most of the time, anyway.) But moving on, I was pleasantly surprised when, mentioning my "limitations", how helpful and knowledgeable the girl ringing me up was. She broke down the menu into entrées I could eat and those I could modify slightly and then eat!

In the end, I'm not really sure what I ordered. All I knew was that I was starving and the food was coming. It was more of a 'pick something & case closed' kind of situation. When the food came, my "auto-Yelp-star-rating-meter" kicked in and rounded it off to five. Delicious!

-tostada/flatbread base
-plantains
-sweet potatoes
-yummy sauce (smothered!)

While a little difficult to eat (the key is to break off smaller chunks of the bread, topped with yumminess) it was completely worth it. A side of chips & guacamole/tapatillo/salsa made for a perfect mid-day meal.

California Academy of Sciences

We decided to start the new year off right with a trip to the California Academy of Sciences. What better a way to ring in the new year than with some awesome new life experiences? Overall, I was really satisfied with the new academy. As a San Franciscan, I've watched the "living roof"-topped building become a major new attraction. Of course, the day I finally found some time to go experience it for myself, everyone else had the same idea, too!

Besides the mass amounts of people, the CAS is really a great place to visit. It's unique because it houses so many different types of exhibits under one roof.

-planetarium
-aquarium
-"rainforest"/aviary/butterfly house
-museum

Although we didn't get to see the planetarium (thankfully we purchased a membership so we'll be able to go back!), everything else was really interesting and educational. My favorite thing was the tank of moon jelly fish (dubbed: moon jellies!). This was downstairs near the tank where you can feel the star fish.

If you go, I recommend trying to go on a 1. weekday and 2. not a national holiday! Otherwise, you might have to wait outside until there's enough room inside for you and your party.

I also was a big fan of the Academy Cafe, but that gets it's own review!
