Grandma Rose's

Food is decent, but despite my note to "call upon arrival", he decided to ignore the phone number on the receipt and the cell phone in his hand and bang and yell on not only my front door but my bedroom window. I realized it was him after being scared out of my mind that someone was angry and trying to break into my house. Really disturbing and not good form or civilized behavior. He did not apologize and reasoned that "he's busy". There's a million Italian delivery places in the neighborhood. I don't need that. I'll call Nina's or Carmine's next time.

It's hard to give this place an accurate rating, because I would give it 2 stars for food and 5 stars for beer selection. If you're just looking for a place to try some new beers and have an app, this place is perfect. It's acoustics are super loud with cafeteria-style seating, so don't expect to have a romantic time...but the beer is really delicious with an amazing selection of international beers.

My roommate and I went to this place on a recommendation from a foodie friend who recommended the Angus burger. I wasn't eating carbs and my roommate wasn't eating meat, so that was out. Basically, the food we chose all seemed to be trying too hard to put a new spin on old favorites (mac and cheese, grilled cheese, steak salad). The flavors were just a little weird.

I probably would only go back if I wanted to do a beer tasting.

This place looks cute to eat in, but I've only taken out. The pad thai is good when you have a hankering for pad thai and don't want to go far. It's not really worth the extra dollars to splurge for shrimp, I stick with tofu.

Phoebe's Cafe - CLOSED

I'm basically at Phoebe's a few times every week since I moved into the neighborhood. I am a freelancer so I do work there to get out of the house. During weekdays, the place is generally packed with people like me. People on their laptops and cellphones, doing work. It's a very community oriented place and it's typical to see familiar faces.

The coffee is good. I like strong coffee. The prices are a little high, but the food really is delicious. It takes forever, but I never tend to notice since I'm not in a rush. From their amazing veggie burger (I'm not even vegetarian) to their bagels, everything is just really delicious.

I'm not sure how I'd view the place differently if I was a different type of customer, but from a regular's view, it's where you can always find me!

The Mercury Lounge

Category: Dive Bars
Neighborhoods: Lower East Side, Alphabet City

4.0 star rating

I always enjoy a show at Mercury Lounge. They get some of the best lineups in town since they are run by the, in my opinion, best thing happening in the live music business in NYC - Bowery Presents. It's predominantly a music venue of medium stature, but there is a bar right outside of the live room for socializing before and after.

There is limited seating on either side of the live room, which typically ends up getting stood on during the show, since there is no sort of elevation in the mostly standing-room-only space.

The sound is decent. And the location is super convenient on the Lower East Side. All in all, Mercury is a straightforward venue to catch some of the solid acts Bowery books in the space. No more, no less.

Johnnie's Dog House - CLOSED

My first week at my job, our boss treated us to Johnnie Dogs. It's been a work tradition since they've been in this particular location and one that I'm quite fond of.  There's nothing better than grabbing a bunch of hot dogs or sausage sandwiches with delicious greasy fries and rings on a Friday after a long week. It was annoying when I had to go stand in line for a half hour just to pick up the order that I had already ordered, but you take the good with the bad. It's delicious for that greasy fix.

Pie In the Sky Pizzeria

I wanted to venture into the town of Wayne and stray away from my staple Genaurdi's lunch during work one day. I went onto the cute street of Lancaster Ave. where I knew a bunch of great restaurants resided and picked a pizza place - Pie in the Sky.

I was in the mood for a good chicken cheesesteak. Little did I know I was in for the best freakin' chicken cheesesteak of my life. And I've had a lot of chicken cheesesteaks....

I went back 2 days later to get my fix again and told the guys working how much I loved it and they informed me that they had actually just been picked as Philadelphia magazine's Best of Philly in the cheesesteak dept. I was not at all surprised. I was just really excited that I had this unsung hero of cheesesteaks right under my nose on my lunchbreak!

I did, however, yell at them for using styrofoam boxes for takeout. Not green at all. But they were more concerned with making sure my delicious sandwich didn't get smushed. Maybe one day I'll get to design them a green-friendly, smush-free box. Consider it a goal.

I had been wanting to try this place for a while as I am a huge fan of trying new beer, so we finally went and it wasn't the least bit of a let-down. It was a little expensive for my sensitive wallet, but well worth it.

I tried the Le Cheuff and some Middle Ages 13th Cent. beer made by some mad doctor and enjoyed it all. I found myself singing to every single song that came on and had to ask the bartender who the DJ was. He said it was his ipod and I gave him my compliments. The staff was generally awesome and the patrons were all fairly friendly and relaxed. I didn't try the food although my friend I was with was raving about the fries, but by the time we were hungry the kitchen was closed. Next time...

The Pod Hotel

You know a place is good when you can't even wait until you've had the complete experience to tell people about it.  I am currently sitting in the lobby, eating one of the best breakfasts. Organic yogurt with wildflower honey, granola & berries. Toasted bagel with smoked salmon, red onions, tomato & capers. Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Vanilla free trade iced tea. And did I mention the presentation is beautiful?

I'm in a single room with a shared bathroom. The room itself is small, but not smaller than I expected. It was totally clean, the bed doubles as a couch when it's made up, there are drawers under the bed and places to hang your clothes, a desk, chair, and clock radio with an ipod dock. You have to go out into the hallway to use the bathroom, but they're private bathroom, also very luxurious with marble floors and stainless steel and ultimately very modern sinks and showerheads. I was lucky enough to have one of the bathrooms right next to my room. Never once did I go to use the bathroom and have to wait.  It's nice to be able to crank the AC since it's so hot outside and have it freezing in my room. I had a great night's sleep.

The staff is friendly and accomodating. The lobby/lounge is beautifully decorated, clean and modern.  Basically the entire experience is nothing but enjoyable and I don't think you can get a pleasant experience like this for $150 a night in nyc, with a great location (right off the E), anywhere else.  Oh yeah, and there's great wifi access that allowed me to yelp while here!

I'll let you know if anything goes wrong, but so far, The Pod Hotel has made my NYC experience more than pleasurable.

This is the must-stop dinner place on the way home from the shore.  We always grab some beer and stop here for our clam fix.  Clam chowder, clam strips, corn salad...you can never go wrong.  I choose to come here over some of the 5 star places around.
