Textile Discount Outlet
Category: Fabric Stores
Neighborhood: Pilsen
And I quote to a friend on email:
"OMFG - 3 FLOORs of fabric BLISS - enough to create the new word - Fabricgasm! XD"
This IS a FABRIC store.
No crafts, no paint, no floral department, no jewelry parts, no seasonal trinkets or stuff, no scrapbook section, no baking aisle, no knitting, no kiddie toys, no vases or home decor gunk, no art supplies, no miscellaneous goods clutter. Just fabric on first floor, fabric on second floor, and fabric on third floor. And trim, notions, leather, and sewing related items. The selection is insane. Probably spend a month there and find something new. Cannot believe after all these years (even worked at unnamed chain fabric store zillion years ago) that I never heard of this store.
Yes, it's not "pretty" and sterile. When going to the basement or 3rd floor, it's like going to someone's basement or attic - just 1/2 block long.
And like a basement or attic - you never know what treasure you'll find. :D
Sometimes hard to know the price of the fabric. But most of the time it's pretty damn cheap. And they're generous with fabric swatches and don't count it against your fabric length when they cut it. Also, the rolls are big and bulky - so bring a fabric loving friend (with muscles) or gain some yourself by weight training doing reps with the fabric rolls. And parking might be difficult despite having a small lot, but what do you expect - it's metro Chicago - not a suburb mall with sweeping hills of parking.
But whatever, I'm there for fabric, plain and simple. Got a couple of knits that can easily cost 2-3 times as much at another store. Also found out about discount pricing applies to some of their fabrics. The staff were very nice, patient, and helpful too.
So if you like a pristine, organized store with lots of miscellaneous junk (and usually higher prices) - don't bother to come. The rest of us can enjoy this buried treasure and have more fabric to ourselves. Yaaar!

Elston Ace Hardware Co
Category: Hardware Stores
Neighborhood: Avondale
What a hassle, not going back again.
First off, I frequently go to hardware stores more than art stores for projects. And been to many chains. Came in this store because it was nearby. Did not want to go through the hustle and bustle of the Elston & Logan Blvd. area.
Checked the website and it was open until 7pm. Went straight in around 6:15pm to get what I need asap. Felt I was getting rushed later but I didn't see the sign posted out front that they changed their hours to 6:30
So website needs a big update on hours to prevent mishaps. Yeah, felt pretty bad that I was the last customer but had no clue I was in the wrong until after the fact. Ironically I checked the website just to make sure that it was open.
$1.19 ~ 1 Wing Nut
$2.40 = 4 Thumbscrews X $0.60
$0.40 = 4 Washers X $0.10
$0.40 = 4 Nuts X $0.10
(Do the math)
When my total came out to $7.49, I was perplexed and was looking at the receipt, and the clerk said something about 80 cents and multiplying and pointing at the plastic bag and feeling very rushed.
Something still didn't feel right about what happened so when I settled down and did the math, it did not add up. I was getting overcharged $2.40 for a couple of items that cost 80 CENTS total (nuts and washers).
Went back a couple days later to return the $1.19 wing nut and point out the overcharge. The same clerk came by and tried to tell me about the prices on the bag and she realized her mistake. Okay, that's fine, we all make them right? Also, I tried to apologize about the store closing hour and the website being inaccurate but was largely ignored as she was just processing everything really fast. Didn't understand the rush even though the store was quiet in the morning.
I got refunded $0.43
Even though I returned the $1.19 wing nut
Didn't want to deal with more hassle and asking about more money and just left.
And now this review to warn all you Yelpers.
Glad I kept the receipts as proof of the effed up transactions.
The only good thing from my experience is the guy who helped me get the right fasteners for my project. Alas it's not enough for me to come back again due to my charging hassle at the counter. I understand everyone makes mistakes (I used to be a clerk too) but being screwed over twice, using bad math, and entering data strangely - WTF. Way to go, take the money and pocket the change, I'll just go somewhere else when I get really nice expensive tools and Dremel toys.
If anyone else loves this store, go right ahead.
Just take a real good look at your receipts next time,
you might get screwed.

Kopi Travelers Cafe

The window area is its own miniature microcosm, one segment out of four as the whole of the cafe. 2nd segment is where the baristas are behind the window area. 3rd the table area and finally, a store in the back showcasing imported wares.
Been here on & off with friends and we're always happy with our meals. Though as to be gluttonous enough to $pend too much.
The other night, our server was very sweet as she helped out with my indecision concerning Chai tea, ended up getting Green Chai and it was very good indeed.

Been here twice and love their food. Like the area and the space inside and out as well as the neighborhood. Though anyone not keen on vegan food would probably not like this place as a friend of a friend was very disappointed. Oh well, more for me (as I ate his leftovers).

Cozy place to drink and staff always gave great recommendations for my sweet tooth.
Pub atmosphere with dark lighting in what was a formerly an apartment. You wouldn't know it amongst the pristine shops and restaurants in Winter Park. Figuratively speaking, the "hole in the wall". Sadly closes early at 11 pm :( but the atmosphere makes up for it.
Looking forward to visiting the new location on my next visit.
It was pretty obvious that the indian restaurant was formerly a mexican restaurant. Aside for that, was willing to give the food a try. The entrees were very pricey and portions smaller than expected and not much flavor.
Waitresses were nice but it's a restaurant, food ought to be appetizing not felt like it came from a microwave.
I'm pretty easy to please but this is disappointing.
If you want peace and quiet, forget it. They play their music loud and proud here. Conversation will be a trying effort but stuffing your face won't be.

Wow.
Enough said.
Came in just before 4am and stayed for a very long time. Accidentally dozed but no one bothered me, so that's good.

After eating at many Thai and asian restaurants over the years, never seen one that omits rice from an entree, it always comes with it. This place actually charges extra for rice that you have to buy to go with your meal. You've been warned. How do you eat curry WITHOUT rice?! That is like ordering a Fettuccine Alfredo without the pasta and paying extra just to get that pasta. What's up with that?
While ordering at the phone, I was saying the entree numbers posted on their website but they do not correspond with their menu number. So it was a bit frustrating.
The prices are a bit steep in comparison to other thai restaurants too. Add the rice charge then it gets more steep. That sorta innocent $9.95 meal turns $10.95 - not so good when I've seen cheaper. The nice perk was there was coconut custard, don't know if it was an accident or a gift but still prefer automatic rice with entree.
For the people in the area, it's nice for them to finally have a thai restaurant, it's too bad they have to pay extra for it.
