Slow, surly, shoddy & expensive. I can work around the first, sort of appreciate the second, and can even justify the fourth. But it's shoddy that runs through.

I just came back with five shirts. The press-job for the top half was great, but the bottoms all had some oblong shaped, like a giant tongue depressor, neatly stamped into the pressing. Below that, the runner around the bottom of the shirt looked like a twisting DNA strand. Probably OK if these shirts were meant to be tucked in, but they aren't!

So I'm done.

I'm not a huge ice cream fan. However, mix it up with some booze, and you're talking a totally different game!

I was first introduced to Lee and her liquor-ific confections at the Phoenix New Time Gala Event (or whatever it was called) a few months back. It was a huge hit, and the ladies I was with couldn't get enough!

Fast forward to this weekend, and one of those ladies (who looks very much like my mother) came back to down with three friends in tow. They asked about Lee's and I found that she had just opened her shop. Were I not a devout skeptic, I'd claim divine intervention!

Through the course of the weekend, we took two different trips, for the gals couldn't get enough! And truth be told, I was mighty impressed myself.

As other reviewers have said this is ice CREAM. Very creamy. The booze isn't overpowering, either. It's a nice addition, so you don't have to worry about an open flame. And yes, Lee even serves up non-alcoholic flavors for those who don't partake. I assume those are good. Not like I tried any.

We'll be back. Lots. It's hot out there! Adult ice cream, FTW!

I think we ate half the menu. All of it was mind-blowingly good.

You think that's hyperbole? it's not. I went with two TOUGH people to find food for on account of their pickyness. Even they were impressed. Every bite was amazing. It's going to be tough to find a tapas bar to compete with this place.

We had no less than 8 plates, all of them awesome. The lamb skewers were sublime. The diablo shrimp was so good, we wanted to save the sauce for dipping. Hell, we wanted to dip the flan in it, it was so good!

Great atmosphere. Great service. And incredible food. This is my favorite place to eat in Vegas!

Without a doubt the freshest sushi I've ever eaten. I stuck to the plan of "order what's on the special board" and "take the server's advice" and it didn't fail me. At all.

I love me some spider crab. Most places it's over cooked and/or gets drowned out by the other flavors in the roll. Not this time. Loads of crab flavor.

And the unagi was sublime. I normally pass, as the over-sweet sauce just doesn't cut it for me. But I gave it a shot. Wow. Skip the sauce. Just enjoy the incredible flavor. Wonderful.

Their rice-less roll (tsunami?) was sublime. Every bite was fresh layered on top of fresh. The tempura battering was light and flakey. Highly recommended.

The only strikes were selection. Two of the items we ordered weren't available. Not necessarily a bad thing, as I think that speaks to the the freshness. They order enough for the day. And we ate late, so I'm not terribly surprised they were out.

That, and the under-chef convinced me to forgo the ikura with quail egg in favor of tobikko with quail egg. It was good, and in his defense he offered to not charge me for it if I didn't like it. But I did like it. Just not as much as I would have if I would have capped my meal with the ikura/quail combo. Mine may not be traditional. And it may be heretical. But it's fab. So I'll get that next time and stick to my guns.

Because, oh yes... we'll be back!

Firsts!

This place is brand spanking new, but you wouldn't know it by the waitstaff. Very friendly and helpful, with pretty deep knowledge of the menu. Great training!

To be honest, Irish pubs aren't my natural inclination simply because of the beer selection. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of Irish beer. Yeah, I'm an anomaly. But this place does have ODell's 90 Shilling. Oddly enough, it's a lighter Scottish ale that I actually rather enjoy. So they get an extra star for that.

The lunch fish and chips were OK. I prefer my curry -- had to pay extra for it and it was tiny -- a little spicier, but that's a personal taste. Two of my group had some huge corned beef sandwich monstrosity that couldn't be finished by either. Everyone declared the food tasty.

We're going #evfn here this weekend, so we'll see how they do with a crowd!

I love quirk. I love great beer. So it's no surprise this place gets 5 stars.

The beer is top notch. I've been through most of their own selections and have found each of them to be outstanding. Their IPA is the finest I've had in the Phoenix area. Ask around: I know my IPAs.

The staff is fun, quick to respond and seems to really enjoy what they do. The atmosphere jumps from laid back to loud and full-tilt party. Or maybe that's just because I brought about 30 people to sample it last night. Yes, #evfn there was a hit and we'll be back.

I'm also quite impressed with how easy the process of ordering food from delivery places was. Fast, no hassle and very accommodating. It's a little strange to order food delivered to saloon, but once you do it, you find it works like a champ.

Hats off to Rob and crew. I'll be back. Soon!

I gave it an extra star for being that funky in downtown Chandler.

We just had #evfn here last night. The on-staff crew gets a gold star for making accommodations for our big group. The original plan was for us to be on the back patio -- which looks friggin awesome -- but the Phoenix Winter Storm '10 forced them to wedge us inside. It all worked out quite well at the end.

I wasn't super hungry, so I had the Pho. Tasty. And with all the trimmings. Sheila enjoyed the sushi, both rolls that she said were good and sashimi which isn't her normal fare. And I assume her dirty, dirty, dirty martinis were good simply on the sheer volume she consumed. Good thing I stuck to club soda and drove her home.

This seems a perfect date and small group place. Plenty of nooks and crannies to lose yourself in. And the wait-staff gets high marks. We had a single server who did a great job with our crowd of about 30. Looking around the joint, plenty of other servers were hustling from table to table, and I didn't see anyone waiting long for checks and food beyond what you might expect for our group.

Well done, Siracha. We'll have to try another #evfn there in the spring and enjoy your patio.

Update - 1/19/2010
What a difference a guided tour and 24 hours can make!

Upon learning of my less-than-stellar reaction to their favorite sushi and teppan spot, the insisted I return. And am I ever happy I did!

This time I stuck to the small board of "specials" in the back, enjoying some incredible smoked salmon and albacore. I nibbled on a little of the white toro and even had some of the teppan others were enjoying. Outstanding!

So if you go, ignore the rolls. It's as if they are made for the average schmo who doesn't really like sushi and was brought there on a dare. In fact, skip the whole menu and look behind the sushi bar to the little white board. That's the good stuff.

Plus: The uni was quite good. I'm a recent convert to the Way of the Uni, so I had high hopes based on my first tastes. But in the end, the rest of the meal was just... meh.

I'm a sucker for Spider rolls. But this one was over-powered by the addition of some odd crab meat mix. It wasn't bad, but it sure didn't have the flavor of soft-shell crab.

My wife had the Crunch Eel roll. It's a variation of something she gets as her standard order. Because the ingredients tend to be different from spot to spot, it's always fun to see each establishment's take on her favorite. In Sakana's case, they go much heavier on the batter, developing a product that's, well... hard. The "eel sauce" was heavier on the eel than the sugar. To me, that's a matter of taste. These guys want more eel, she wants it sweeter. That's OK. Just a mismatch in expectations.

She also had some unagi nigiri. Her comment: not very flavorful. But I chalk up at least some of this to the sauce, as that didn't resonate with her.

But as luck would have it, some friends have invited us _back_ tonight. They claim it's one of their favorite places. So maybe we just ordered wrong. At any rate, we'll try that again. Maybe the teppanyaki is better than the rolls, or that the sashimi will be sublime?

The Dhaba

I am by no means an expert on India cuisine. My experience is limited to dozens of buffets and a single non-buffet experience a friend took me to in Manhattan. While that was good, this was awe-inspiring.

The Dhaba is NOT a buffet restaurant. They serve fresh Punjabi food and have an extensive menu. But not at lunch during the week. Their innovative approach is to rotate through the best items on their menu each week. We ate their on a Thursday. We skipped the two vegetarian entrees and went straight for the chicken and lamb. Both were melt-in-your-mouth outstanding. Both were spiced for flavor, not simply heat. I'm a huge fan of hot food, but it wasn't until driving out of the parking lot that I realized how not-hot the food had been. Amazing.

We had the Mur Lasuni Tikka (chicken) and the Kali Marichi Ka Gosht (lamb). Served family style, with fantastic madras lentils (they probably call it something different), yogurt sauce (taziki?) , naan that perfectly complimented the meal instead of overpowering it, and a lovely salad with a mango-and-lots-of-other-good-stuff dressing.

The lovely lady there took the time to explain everything to us and made the experience that much better. And since they rotate the lunch menu every day during the week -- full menu on the weekends and for dinner -- I have good reason to return at least four more times this month!

Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles

I have had chicken. I have had waffles. And now, I've had chicken AND waffles.

Prior to today, I didn't realize the distinction. Prior to today, I never had cause to consider the combination. Prior to today, I didn't realize what I was missing.

Now let's be clear: this isn't the place for dieters. It's not a place for any pretentious behavior. The place has "Chicken & Waffles" in the name, OK? And that's what you're going to get. In abundance.

Cheap as hell. I had the #1, also known as KK's. Three huge-ass pieces of chicken -- breas, thigh and mutant leg. All battered and fried to perfection. Two waffles the size of Vermont. A bucket of grits with some egg/cheese/onion concoction on the side. OK, I could have done without the last part. But hey, when in a chicken & waffle place...

I'm still full. I won't eat dinner tonight. I crashed out for an hour in post-prandial bliss. And I'd have typed this review faster if I could have stopped sucking my fingers like a four-year-old.

Damn.
