There is a lot to love about this place. And... a few things that could use improvement.

A friend told me about it recently, and since then I have been dying to visit. An organic 'specialty' cafe with it's own playroom? Heck yeah. I am all over having lunch with a girlfriend while my kid plays in a soundproof room nearby.

Except that it wasn't exactly as fantabulous as I pictured.

The place itself is C.U.T.E. Little white picket fence, shutters on the windows, it looks like Grandma's house, modernized. We're greeted at the start,  and they hand us menus, pencils and tell us to sit wherever while we check things out.

Their 'family room' is towards the back with cushy lounge seats, little mini tables, and a huge built in low fish tank right at kiddo level and separates the family room from the playroom.

We take what feels like 20 minutes perusing the menu and the options because there's that much to take in. It was like sensory overload. Our kids must have felt the same way because they kept fluttering around us like uncertain butterflies.

Finally pick some stuff off the menu, and head outside to find a table. The place was pretty dead...which we really enjoyed since we could spread out, but was interesting for a Sunday afternoon. In the front is a huge sandbox, you can chill at a table nearby and watch your spawn frolic with other kids in the soft white sand. Or throw it at each other.

The prices here are kinda insane. I get that this place is probably expensive to maintain, the food is organic, it's a novel idea and yup, it's in Los Altos, so I imagine most peeps coming here don't mind dropping some serious coin.

Our bill for 2 gals and 2 kids was $75. I am not kidding. We ordered: a smoothie, a lemonade, tea sandwiches, hot dogs and fruit for the kiddos, 2 cookies and 2 coffees. That's it.

The food was good. The cookies were really not. They seriously need a real baker on these premises or at the very least get some cakes from Satura or something. Trust me, Moms want to eat fabulous desserts while paying for their kids to be watched.

Which brings me to the playroom. I was imagining myself sipping on tea while my kid frolicked in the playroom. Which could happen. For $8 for 30 min. Which is $16 per hour. Not much given the costs of childcare these days, really. But damn I'm already paying $75 for some tea sandwiches and a hot dog, can't you throw in free childcare for at least 30 min??

A few other things. This place needs a few more gates and/or gated areas. The outdoor area is entirely gated from the street, but the latches are on the bottom of the doors, yes right at curious toddler levels. And they aren't latched because that would prevent people from coming into the place at all. Which means once your kid figures out that's how to get out, good luck trying to keep them inside.

And the stairs heading into the house, ungated, and TEMPTING for curious toddlers. We had to go pluck our little guys off the steps about 15-20 times in an hour (try having a real convo doing that every 2 minutes).

Lastly, the ramp for 'stroller parking' is a great idea, but again no gate and it's right next to all the tables where you are hanging out, meaning it's essentially like a giant child-run... up and down, up and down...and since the ramp area leads to an entire back of the property that's not 'child-friendly', they really should gate that off too. After losing sight of them, we found our kids hiding next to a giant stainless fridge right next to the bathroom door.

Oh, and this place does parties. I got a price list thinking maybe we'd have my son's 2nd bday here ... and nearly keeled over. 2 hours for just the playroom+the outdoor deck (not including food or asolutely anything else) starts at $500 and the price list goes up to $2k. Cake cutting fees are $1.50 per person. So basically it's a bajillion dollars to have a kid's party here.

But in case I seem like I don't like this place, I did. Hanging out with a girlfriend and our kids outside in nice fall weather for 3 hours cost me $55. BUT, it was worth it. My kid totally LOVED the playroom and the sandbox. I enjoyed having some girl time in a beautiful environment. The service and everyone there was beyond sweet and solicitous. We will definitely be back, but sparingly.

Bottom line, this place could ratchet the pricing down to appeal to a larger crowd ($3 for cheddar cheese cubes, really?), get better baked goods and make the playroom cheaper or free for paying patrons and I think they'd get way more positive press...and maybe a beautiful Sunday afternoon would be a little more crowded than today. However, huge props for a wonderful idea and I hope this place sticks.

PS... if you sit outside, be prepared to be attacked by crazy bold bees who are not scared of you. We had to 'rig' some food for the bee to eat on a diff table so that it would stop attacking our $75 meal.

This place is located in a casino. In Bethlehem. And it's a restaurant named after a TV chef. But don't judge a book by it's cover.

This place was great.

Firstly, there was our waiter. We came into this ritzy looking place with a 1.5 year old toddler. Sure it was 5pm and the place was dead, but instead of giving us the evil eye, our fabulous waiter took special care of us...and he ADORED my toddler. As such, my son had a great time feeling like he was included, and was so well-behaved even sitting though 2+ hours of dinner...we were amazed.

Secondly, the food. We live in a place where we are happy to boast a ton of great restaurants and some very tasty steakhouses. But the new york strip I had here easily knocked other local places on their asses. It was tender, flavorful and cooked perfectly.

Their specials were great too. Shrimp crab dumplings were spiced just right, and the bacon rasher was devoured by everyone at the table, even original skeptics. There were so many ala carte sides we had a hard time choosing...but everything was delish.

The dessert was just the icing on the cake, but we tried the warm cookies for my son (ok so I ate at least 1/2) and the banana cream pie. Tasty. Steak was better though.

Our entire party really loved their meals and it was a great way to treat our fabulous hosts for taking such great care of us during the visit.

Random comical moments that must be mentioned... when my son had to be 'escorted' to the restaurant because he's underage (you know how dangerous those toddler gamblers are!); and when we asked for a glass of milk for my kiddo and they brought out a real GLASS of milk with a straw. Toto we aren't in Kansas anymore.

A secret little slice of heaven in a most unexpected place.

My husband's old college stomping grounds...we visit from time to time and normally end up eating at some random greasy spoon where you kind of want to question their sanitary requirements, but not too closely because you ARE eating the food.

On our last visit to find breakfast ..find that the typical random greasy spoon had since closed and been replaced by a to-go Indian place. We were just about to feel a little sad, until we spotted Blue Sky.

This place is amazing. Four words is all you really need to know. Banana Bourbon French Toast. It is as awesome as it sounds. The toast was even caramelized. It was almost too sweet to eat, ALMOST being the operative word...I managed to gobble it all up in record time.

If sweet isn't your thing, then their omelets and scrambles are darn good too. My husband had an omelet with wild mushrooms, bacon and gouda cheese. Sounds great right? It was.

Pumpkin pancakes as a seasonal special, win win. Fresh orange juice. GOOD coffee. Even my kid was happy...the waitstaff loved him. Service was great...this is not the type of place for a rushed breakfast, but they were not slow.

Oh and the casual vibe, felt like I was at home in California. We went twice on our trip and I can't wait to go back for that FRENCH TOAST.  Divine.

After hemming and hawing over where to go for my Mom's recent bday dinner, we ended up here. CC always functions as a great standby if we need something good and local that doesn't break the bank.

Once seated inside... and looking around, I thought oh crap this place was not the best choice for an 18mo old toddler. The inside is a wee bit posh with that dark 'we're chic' feel to it. We've only eaten outside and their patio has a different, more casual vibe.

The oh crap feeling persisted while viewing the menu. What part of 'ahi tuna tartare' and 'carmelized brie' screams kiddie meal. That would be no part.

I took heart in the fact that they had a coloring book and crayons for my kiddo and seemed fully stocked with high chairs. Looked on the back of the book to find the kiddie menu (something I only recently learned about BTW). Bingo. CC offers a 'bento box' option for $5.50 which means you choose 1 item from 4 quadrants and they deliver your squirmy kid a bento box of 4 diff types of food.

Genius. I didn't have to order my kid chicken fingers and then only be stuck with a fry option for the side. There were about 10 diff items to choose from and they included the fruit and veggie food groups as well. Total win. And the amt of food on this $5.50 item, it could have fed three toddlers.

Overall, the food was pretty good, and the dessert (caramel bread pudding and tiramisu!) was amazing, but given that my kid LOVED the bento box, especially the fruits/berries that I doubled up on, made CC my hero for the evening.

Only downer is that the gnocchi with tomato sauce they delivered in the bento box was steaming hot as in STEAMING for a good five min. You don't deliver a meal to a 1.5 year old with a dish so hot that there definitely would have been screaming if he had grabbed it immediately. Thankfully the other areas of the bento distracted him while I fanned off the 4th item on a separate plate.

Also, they were pretty crowded and service got a little slow towards the end of the meal, so they comp'd our desserts which is another little awesome win. Thanks CC for rescuing our last-minute family bday dinner and then some.. I love a surprise when I think that I've got you all figured out. We'll definitely be back soon.

Bomb ass bittersweet chocolate shake can be yours here for the worth-it cost of $5.25. Your jeans will NOT thank you for it later, but your taste-buds will. Enjoy.

PS...this is still the best place besides the Campbell's Farmers Market to get organic produce. Since I don't want my 15mo old kid growing an 11th toe, we pay.

$12 fresh, round, hard, green grapes? Sign me up!

Seriously, my husband is always like 'HOW MUCH???' whenever I come back with multiple Whole Foods bags in my sweaty little hand.

But in my grape-buying defense...have you tried the Safeway/Lucky grapes for $4? They suck. So I'd rather pay $12 for grapes I am going to actually consume than $4 for grapes that will sit and rot in my fridge. Call me crazy.

So...yep, already a WF lover thanks to their fruit dept. But I am absolutely smitten with this new Whole Foods location in Cupertino....thankfu lly it's near work so we end up here quite often for lunch.

Though WF is notoriously expensive, they do have the odd deal from time to time. Aka I got 3 lbs of fresh turkey breast chunks in their deli section for $12 yesterday for a group dinner thing and it was tasty when heated in the oven with a bit of broth over it. Their amazing mushroom gravy and spicy cranberry relish were staples in our house over the holidays.

As everyone else has already said, this place is massive. Imagine Home Depot as a grocery store. With better organization. Though, you can easily get lost for 15 or 20 minutes, wandering around from aisle to aisle, and then end up in the checkout aisle going 'how did this get into my basket?'...or more often shades of...'WOAH where did my basket go and why is this CART full??'

I also love how they carry so many specialty gelatos and ice creams. They have Gelato Classico pre-packed which is one of my favorite local eats (Powell's carries it), as well as Gelato Massimo which is a local Monterey Bay company that makes a light gelato, half cals and fat and they have pumpkin. And it's GOOD. My husband who doesn't love light items is always looking for it in the freezer (it's long gone buddy). The super large WF's are the only ones that carry it now, the small WF's don't have space.

Sushi bar, pizza by the slice, turkey dinner in the middle of summer, fresh packed salads, soups, smoked chicken breast, fresh made guac, pre-packed fresh chopped fruit. A ton of lunch options as well as the odd side dish for that dinner you don't want to actually cook for...this place rocks. Is it wrong that I like to take lunch field trips there JUST to wander around and see what new goodies I never knew existed?

Parking can be hit or miss but you can typically find a spot. The staff is always friendly, chatting you up at checkout and who doesn't love their '5 items or less' checkout (or maybe it's like 7...who knows...I never make it into that line anyway) for a quickie lunch purchase? As for staff, I find them uber helpful when I need GPS help in the cavernous store.

Too bad it isn't located right next to my house. Cuz I think I'd just pay them to let me live there. It's kind of like a mortgage right?

Still a random-filled gem, all these years later.

Our last trip out, my husband managed to find, wait for it....

A chocolate brown miniature leather chair for our 15mo old little boy.

It looks just like the one from Macy's we have in our living room. Scary. Now father and son can sit together and read their respective items (Everybody Poops for baby and WSJ for daddy).

Made in China. Of course.
BPA covered... I'm sure.

But my two favorite boys love it. So I can't hate.

Also came home with 2 awesome pebbled stone soap dishes and a ceramic garden bunny. Random. Love.

STILL want one of these near us in N.CA. The cashier guy said it would never happen. Sadness.

I seriously can't believe that there aren't like 500 reviews for this place already. I have been going to the Alley on S. Palm Canyon for years! Maybe it's a PS best kept secret, but I am dying to get one of these over near us. They have ~5 locations, but they are all in the PS area.

What kind of shop are they?? I don't even know how to classify it...other than I always feel like this place has a serious case of Multiple Personality Disorder.  But maybe a good kind of confused.

There's a huge kitchen and supply section, and they sell dinnerware at a huge discount..and it's very cool too. Like stuff you'd see at CB but for $2.99 a plate/mug/bowl. I could create a complete 8 piece place setting for under $100 here. I was actually about to this time...because my PB everyday set is like 7 years old with chips, but Greg dragged me away, cruel man!!

Then on the other side of the huge building, they have furniture and home decor items. We bought a rattan bench here 4 years ago for $35 and it has sat in our entryway since. We get a ton of compliments on it and my husband uses it daily.

I always want to bring home multiple home decor items but lucky for my better half, we never can fit what I want in the car. Apparently now they sell online too so I can't wait to check out their site and start shopping.

They also taunt you with small fun home items like picture frames, huge mirrors and french country style clocks for CHEAP--and these are items you'd easily see in boutiques all up and down small towns in N. CA, marked up a zillion percent. This place excels in imports big time.

Then fill in the rest of the store with random items like stationery and greeting cards, fake plants, and knick-knacks...and you might have a somewhat accurate mental picture of this fabu place.

Did I say I want one near us? Please please please The Alley Gods...put one of these within at least a one hour driving distance of San Jose, CA. I will forever be your best client. Or one of them anyway.

Top meal.

How did we miss this beautiful little gem the last handful of visits to Palm Springs? I am not sure, but I am very glad we discovered it on Yelp this time around.

This place has been here 37 years. YES, 37 years! Enter through a door to something that looks like a regular ole house, but in their central patio area it's a transformed little garden oasis under tumbleweed-lit trees. Those trees were planted when the owner opened the restaurant.

The food was French and while French oftentimes to me means I'll have a 'too-rich' stomach-ache later that evening, there was no such thing this night.

Highlights of our meal:
The popular foie gras raviolis with aged parmesan. I don't like foie gras but this was pretty good.
Crunchy scallops with pear and frisee. GENIUS idea. Loved these.
Lobster ravioli, very good, a little rich but didn't stop me from trying to consume them all.

The one disappointment was the chocolate souffle. It was a little underdone which I was not keen on (texture), but my husband still liked it.

The coffee was surprisingly strong, LOVE..

The service here was top-notch, we enjoyed our sassy server and a bonus point for the cute way they show you the menu, on chalkboards they bring up to your table. Very green.

An awesome sight to see was the owner moving from table to table most of the evening making sure the guests were enjoying their meal and making small talk. And this place is fab for people watching too. Great mix of young and old in the crowd.

We'll definitely return next time we're in town!! Hidden gem, found. Show owner comment »

...came here after being away from PS for 2 years and it's still as fabulous as we remembered. Though they seem to have changed their recipe for the lemon pancakes, they were still amazing. Hub still loved his artichoke Benedict. And their homemade granola... no other can compare.

The service was wonderful as well, I can't recall our server's name but he was great... our coffee press had grinds in it and before we could even say a thing he whisked it away and replaced it.

Bonus, make sure to mention Yelp during a weekday and you get 30% off your meal. It makes the pricing more inline with other chic breakfast spots in PS.

The most expensive AND most fabulous breakfast you'll probably ever have.

Anyone who knows me knows that our most fave breakkies ever consistently have come year after year from Norma's. I make a mean pancake at home but my skills are a pale nothingness of comparison to the yumminess that happens every morning at Norma's.

I'm pretty picky about giving 5 stars to just about anything, except sweets, but we have stayed at the Parker 4 years in a row...and Norma's is the place we consistently look fwd to for amazing breakfast. Their lunch can be hit or miss at times (lobster mac is amazing though), but BREAKFAST is an absolute must have here.

Because we've been there so often, we've tried almost everything on their breakfast menu..and it's quite an extensive menu. I always wish our visit was 10 days long, because I need more days for all the goodies I want to eat. If I could JUST have breakfast for 4 days, I think I'd have it here.

Our previous visit, I discovered their Lemon Griddle cakes with fresh Devonshire cream..and let me just say..OH MY GOD. These literally melted in my mouth. I started my meal with the fruit and yogurt plate and figured I'd share the griddle cakes with my hubby, but somehow they found their way almost entirely into my mouth and he got maybe onemeasly bite.

I spent the rest of the trip daydreaming about them...even while I made myself try other items on the menu. The Banana Macadamia Nut pancakes were good, but they made the mistake of being consumed the day after the lemon griddle cakes...so they could have been amazing and it wouldn't have mattered. Don't think they were though. Amazing, that is.

Then the next day we tried the Blueberry Pancakes with Devonshire Cream. Definitely an improvement over Banana, but not as good as Lemon. Seeing a pattern here?!?!

So this year when we went, I knew what I was getting this time around and had the Lemon Griddle cakes two mornings out of three...with the third being reserved for Crunchy French Toast. I love my breakfast routines. They also will scramble up some pricey egg whites for a quick protein fix along with your carbo-loading on the pancakes and french toast. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

The one item that was definitely as good as the Lemon Griddle Cakes was the Crunchy French Toast with Caramel Sauce. I had this many moons ago at the Norma's in NYC and it is what set the bar for absolutely fabulous french toast for the next ten years...so it always has had a sweet spot in my heart..and absolutely never disappoints. Only the fattest slices of texas toast, crunchy rice crispies, and hot caramel sauce? What else do you need (besides more lemon griddle cakes)?

Other yummy wins...egg white omelets with asparagus and mushrooms; the fresh granola with nuts and berries and paired with low fat yogurt is a definite hit, even for my hubby who isn't a healthy food nut, he always requests we get it at least one morning; he also loves the various types of eggs benny they have there...if you are a fan try the truffled artychoked benedict, divine; we both love the smoked salmon, caviar, and capers on a toasted bagel option as well.

Their coffee is french press and quite tasty, I could just sit there all day and drink it in cup after cup...actually we do some mornings while trying to wake ourselves out of the vacation fog that happens so quickly here.

Definitely try their smoothie of the day in the little sample size they bring you, our favorite was the watermelon apple they had on a previous visit and this time a cinnamon honey one hit the spot. They bring you the sample then you can order a glass if you like it.

The only previous snafu we have had here was when it was my better half's bday last year, and the staff forgot to acknowledge it even though I'd set it up previously with the concierge. But when I mentioned it off to the side, they promptly brought out with a beautiful glass container of chocolate mousse with a lit candle in it and sang to him (see picture!). All better.

I could rave for days about this place and their breakfast, in fact, damn...this review is already quite long. It is expensive and I think they raised their prices even higher, but the food is exceptional if maybe not quite worth what you pay...however nothing coming out of MY kitchen has ever been as good as those lemon griddle cakes, so maybe it IS worth the $$$.

We are constantly on the search for amazing contenders to rival Norma's breakkie but alas, nothing has come so close yet. My husband says maybe that's a good thing because otherwise it wouldn't be quite so special to us. Exactly why we'll be back next year for...you guessed it. Lemon griddle cakes.

I'm a breakfast snob. I admit it, and quite freely. I don't eat it all that often, not in a hard core full-on kinda way, so on vacation I love getting my breakfast grub on.

Typically you'll find us at Norma's in PS...but we tried Cheeky's since a few friends raved about it. Win.

The wait was 15min so we walked around DTPS and checked out all the vintage/antique/modern furniture store places. I could easily redecorate my whole house on this strip of PS -- but I digress.

Sat outside on a beautiful, crisp sunny spring morning. Service was friendly and prompt. Ordered a few pieces of their specialty bacon (YUM!!), a specialty benedict and chilaquiles. Everything was GREAT--we cleaned our plates then rolled our swollen bellies back to the hotel.

Hub loved his Greyhound, which is grapefruit juice with vodka, simple yet so genius, and SWEET.

Only downer was that they had their misters on 'high' so we were getting misted with recycled PS water into our food and drinks the first 2 times they came on. I guess someone complained because the next time they were lower.

Overall, total win and a must-try... we will definitely eat there again. And again. And again. Bonus, cheaper than Norma's. With shopping nearby.

Mister Parker's

Categories: French, Bars

3.0 star rating
4/25/2011
We have happily stayed at the Parker for many years, and while we love the hotel, we typically went in the summer which means Mr. Parker's was always closed for the summer.

Because of this, it increased our desire to dine there a bit more each year. So this trip, upon finding out that it was open (it's still in-season), we were excited to try it out.

Made a ressie, easy peasy. BTW if you use Open Table you have to give them a CC and their 'cancellation policy' is a little sketch, it says that you can cancel within 24 hours but then a line down it says if you cancel within 24 hours you may or may not still be charged. Umm k. I called and made a ressie over the phone with no credit card required.

The inside is as swank and dark as can be expected from a posh, trendy place like this. We had the option of dining in the busy main room where it's obvious you want to see and be seen, or a more private secluded romantic back room with a roaring fire and a fabulous bar setup. We chose the back room.

Our waiter was wonderful, very thorough and attentive and never once did we feel ignored even though we were in a smaller back room with 2 other couples.

The food though, left something to be desired. My husband had the grilled foie gras and enjoyed it. I had an appetizer with goat cheese, phyllo, and arugula. Liked it--but man, it was enormous. As in, it could-be-an-entree enormous. They should half that and also halve the cost. I was practically full after eating just 1/2.

I ordered the butternut squash soup with a cream swirl and gingerbread croutons. Sounds yummy right? It was WAY WAY too incredibly sweet, and I have a sweet tooth. I couldn't even eat more than 1/4 of it. It desperately needed something to cut the sweetness, it was like drinking a warm dessert drink.

For entree, I chose the mussels which sounded good in principal. Except they were subbing green mussels for the original black ones. I should have known and steered clear because green mussels are nothing like black, they are usually tough and way too gamey. But I chose it anyway and regretted it. They were overdone to the point of chewiness, and COLD... the dish had obviously been done too soon and sat there for a while until our other food was ready. Fail. I didn't eat them. Oh and a giant pile of green mussels in tepid broth that is WAY down in the bottom of the bowl does not a $25 dish make.

At this point I also had a crazy stomachache, doubt it was from the food but we just paid up and left. My husband did like his lamb and his foie gras, but I guess I made all the wrong choices. It was truly unfortunate as the service and ambiance was great, the food just did not make it happen this time around. Maybe next time.
