El Dorado Urgent Care

The best urgent care in Tucson. There's a reason it's the highest rated urgent care on Yelp. The staff was helpful and attentive and the fees were reasonable and covered by insurance.

I was seen within 10 minutes and the entire visit (with a patient care technician, RN, and doctor + strep test) took no more than 45 minutes. I wasn't left waiting in the exam room for more than 5 minutes at any time, and the staff explained future care instructions and there was plenty of parking.

For a non-pretentious neighborhood restaurant, this is about as great as it gets. The Mediterranean food is substantial, creative, and presented really well. The service was really fast  and they has some pretty spectacular coffee.

I live nearby and will be making my way over here as much as I physically can. They put their own spin on tried-and-true favorites (philly cheesesteak anyone?) and have great lamb.

Oh, and two people can have a full lunch at Cafe Ole for under $25.

Consider this a consistent endorsement.

I came here on a date and was blown away with the level of service and quality of food. The She Crab soup was honestly life changing.. and I'm not just saying that. Sure the food was expensive, but so was Cafe Atlantico. At lest this pop-up restaurant has a uniquely-themed bar and menu.

It's also worthy to mention that on the day I went Jose Andres was just walking around downstairs mingling with the patrons. And thus I MET JOSE ANDRES! He even took a picture with my friend and I! I've died and gone to DC foodie heaven!

Pros
- the drink menu was absolutely epic
- the bar downstairs is so great that waiting for your table is actually an enjoyable experience
- She Crab soup and lobster roll
- the food descriptions were very interesting
- I met Jose Andres

Cons
- the waiter didn't stop us from waiting to order the pot pie..but then told us it would have taken forever
- it's slightly overpriced
- we came on time for our 8pm reservation, but the table wasn't ready until well after 8:30
- the small plates/meze take on food is getting old

Holy crap- AMAZING BRUNCH!

This restaurant came highly recommended by the BitchesWhoBrunch blog - so we gave it a shot this past Sunday. The location is fantastic (right outside the metro!), the decor chic, and the service was impeccable. At one point, my beau's Coca Cola was actually taken away and replaced without him even asking because the waitress said that it was "too flat" and needed a new carbonation system.

Even though it was only 11am, I ordered the mac n' cheese ($8), made with aged smoked gouda, romano cheese, and orecchiette pasta. There was an option to add bacon (an extra $2, but I decided against it). What made the meal even better was that the mac n' cheese was served with homemade cornbread. Can you say Om Nom Nom?!

Other members of my lunch group ordered the Blueberry pancakes,  egg-sausage-and cheese cross-andwiches, and an omelet. Between all 4 people, we also ordered 2 sides of bacon, 2 sides of scrambled eggs, and a side of sausage. Clearly, we were a hungry bunch.

We not only enjoyed the food and service (I swear out water glasses were never less than half full), but also the price - which was significantly lower than many DC brunches of the same caliber.

But the absolute best part: when we paid with two credit cards - the waitress split the bill based on EXACTLY what items both couples ordered. We never asked her to do that, but she made sure that all drinks and sides were divided according to who ordered them.  This was both unexpected AND exceptionally thoughtful..
Thanks for the amazing service Ulah - we'll definitely be back!

Aveda Institute

Having gotten hooked on the Aveda Institute in my college town, I should probably disclose that I've come here every 6 weeks like clockwork since moving to DC in May. Thus, no matter what issues arise with their services, I'm still coming back over and over again.

This means that whenever the students mess anything up, it's still worth the time and money to keep coming back.

I'm going to be honest: the DC salon has messed up my hair on a number of occasions. But who cares? If you just complain to the educator, they will fix it without a problem. Just go in with a concrete idea of what you want - or you may not be 100% jazzed with the results. However - this is a handy pro-con list that I hope encourages you to make an appointment at Aveda ASAP-

pros
- super cheap
- students are great
- AMAZING location
- no one is pushy (no one is upselling you anything)
- the blowouts are worth the price alone
- can't go wrong with Aveda dye quality

cons
- hard to get a Saturday appointment
- sometimes they do the wrong color/cut
- takes forever

I'm a diehard  Aveda fan, and will continue coming back to the Institute until I get a raise or can find another salon that does full-foil highlights AND tones them, for under $100...

Standard

Despite the incredibly long wait for a table (and disorganized wait staff), this was my favorite BBQ experience in DC thus far. The brisket was perfect, as were the french fries and hush puppies. Bloggers' reviews has mentioned that Standard had Bells on tap, but they were completely out one the day that I ate there. Once the weather warms up, this will very likely become the go-to hipster bbq spot in the logan circle/14th st neighborhood. It's food is simple, delicious, and unpretentious.

Brisket for daaayyyssss, hush puppies, great beer, seasoned fries, slaw dogs, and fried pickles.  I'm no food writer, so I probably can't describe in adequate words the awesomeness of the food - but here's a pro/con chart for Standard.

Pros:

delicious food
outdoor seating patio
close to the metro
great beer
open until 2am

Cons:

first come-first serve seating (and very looooong waits for tables)
they were OUT OF PULLED PORK. How do you run out of pulled pork? This is a bbq place?!?
they were also our of Bells beer on tap. hmph
vaguely mediocre service
hipsters, hipsters everywhere
almost no seating indoors, and not enough seats outdoors
doesn't open until noon

I've come here a number of times for post-dinner drinks in the last few months, and have been consistently impressed with the ambiance, service and quality of cocktals.

Their main weekend bartender (I did not catch her name) is terrific with recommendations, and is more than willing to create you a custom off-the-menu drinks if you're in the mood for something particular. 1905's robust drink menu is consistently evolving and I have yet to be disappointed with anything I've ordered.

My friends and I were also big fans of the decor (the awesomeness of which is mentioned by other yelpers in their reviews). However, probably the best part of the restaurant's layout is the large rectangular dining table in the middle - which would comfortably seat 10-12 people in a traditional feast.

The Waffle

I ate here for a pre-New Years brunch with some friends. In addition to the great food (everyone in my group did order some typer of waffle), we were all impressed with the service and decor.

I ordered the chocolate waffle with cream on top, while the rest of my friends ordered some combination involving the original waffle that the place is presumably named after. The food met and exceeded our expectations -and the friendly wait staff refilled our coffee cups the second they became empty.

Overall - I think our experience was clouded by the fact that we had literally NO wait time for a table (score!) and the fact that they serve very delicious thick-cut bacon that everyone enjoyed. I also thought that the 60-s era decor was wonderfully executed.

The Liberty Tavern

I came here for lunch on a weekday during restaurant week 2010 and this place absolutely exceeded my expectations in every way. Every member of my group ordered the requisite appetizer, entree, and desserts - and I can honestly say not a single one of us was the least bit disappointed with out choices.

The pizza is really unique and incredibly delicious (my recommendation: The Vermont pizza). Granted the pizza's aren't huge enough to slit between two people as an entree - but they are definitely great to split between 3 people for an appetizer.

I ordered the fried shrimp for my appetizer, scallops for an entree, and the fruit crisp for dessert - and I can honestly say that they were all delicious and I would certainly order them again when coming back to the Liberty Tavern.

Overall, the waitstaff is courteous and helpful, the service is generally incredibly fast, and the dining area is well lit and nicely decorated.  The service throughout our entire meal was great - and when one member of my party found a piece of plastic in his ice cream - the restaurant manager came by and personally apologized.

It's true what they say - this place is AMAZING for groups! I came here in a group of 12 people, and we each ordered and pair for our own food. No need to make sure people brought cash, no explaining to waiters how to split the check. We simply took our cards up to the register and paid (and tipped) individually. It  was painless and fantastic, all at the same time.

As impressed as I was by the service, lighting, bar, and the layout of the restaurant - the Italian food itself was mildly lackluster. I ordered the whole wheat pasta shrimp scampi, and thought the sauce and pasta itself was not particularly delicious. However, it was only $11 for a huuuge bowl of pasta, so I really can't complain.

You definitely get what you pay for in terms of the food, however the atmosphere and decidedly chic and makes the restaurant a well-priced Italian food hotspot on week nights and weekends.
