The UPS Store

This store has the worst service on Planet Earth. I went in there today with the intention of buying about $475 worth of postage stamps. Now, I don't know if they benefit from selling stamps or not but either way, I was disgusted with the service I got.

There was a scale right on the counter between me and the lady who runs the place.  I asked if they mark-up postage stamps and she said "no but we won't weigh you envelope."  She said they mark-up metered mail by $1.60 per envelope.

I am sending out 475 large envelopes.  Obviously, I'm not going to pay an extra $1.60 for EVERY package.  That would be insane.  But in order for me to buy the right amount of postage, I would need to weigh the envelope.  She refused.  When I placed one envelope on her scale, she immediately pulled it off and said "thank you, good-bye."

Is this woman crazy?  I was ready to spend about $500 at her store this morning.  I had my credit card in my pocket.  Is she out of her mind?!  Her response was completely absurd.

This UPS Store is right across the street from my home and I have heard at least 2 or 3 other people complain about this woman and the way she runs her business.  As far as I'm concerned, she is begging to go out of business.

Do yourself a favor: if you're looking for a UPS store, pass by this one.

I stayed here while in town to speak at an internet marketing conference. From the outside, the hotel looks very shabby and modest. Inside, it's nicer and has some good conference facilities. The location is not great; about five miles south of downtown. The staff were friendly and helpful.

I am giving 3 stars which, in Yelp land, means "A-okay". The main reason I'm not giving more is because the place looks so weak from the outside. Somehow, for a hotel to feel good, it has to look good too. This hotel fails on that point.

I was in Calgary to speak at an internet conference right across the street from this place. So while in town, I dropped in twice. The first time was a quiet Wednesday evening. The second time was Saint Patrick's Day.

The first visit was nice. The place is very relaxed, the food was tasty and affordable, and the beer was cold. All told, I would give it 4 stars.

The second visit was CRAZY. The place was packed with 80% guys and it was near impossible to get a drink. There were empty drink glasses and beer bottles everywhere and the bathrooms were a complete disaster. Yes, I know. Saint Patrick's Day deserves nothing less, but I thought they should've easily had three or four more servers or bartenders on to help keep the place somewhat respectable. I'd give my second visit 2 stars.

So ... I'm giving it the average of the two ... 3 stars. Cheers.

Redwater Rustic Grille

I visited Calgary to speak at an internet marketing conference that was right across the street. So while there, I ate at the Redwater Rustic Grille 3 times. The first time, I had salmon. The second time, I had halibut. The third time, I had the filet mignon. All three were outstanding.

The service was excellent too. The wait staff recognized me on the second and third nights and made a point to come up and say hello. They checked in regularly but not too much and were quick to respond when I needed anything.

I thought the prices were a bit steep.  That's why I'm not giving it 5 stars.  In particular, the halibut on my second visit was the special and the waitress recommended it. The salmon the day before was $24 but when the bill came, I realized the halibut was $34 ($10 more). It's not a big deal but I wish she would've told me at the time she recommended it. Perhaps I should've asked. Anyway, as good as it was, I didn't think it was worth $34.

Overall, this place has a great ambiance, good food and nice service ... but be ready to pay for it.

S.N.O.B. Wine Bar - CLOSED

This is a great spot. It has a warm and welcoming energy with lots of wood and a rustic ambiance. It's pretty small so I wouldn't recommend it for big groups but we were there for a birthday party and about 20 people showed up, and it was perfect. They even showed a quick slide show at the back.

The bar is long and extends throughout most of the bar.  The bathroom is a single with a locking door so if you're there on a busy night, you might be waiting in line. But on a regular night, it's nice to have a bit of privacy when using the loo!  Thumbs up on this one.

Lao-Thai Kitchen

The food was fairly good but the soup was a bit watery. The main problem I have is with the service. There were two servers working at the time we were there and neither one could understand what we were saying. I think it's great to have authentic Thai people working at the restaurant but a good grasp of the language is important too.

We had to explain what we wanted multiple times before it got through - and I'm not talking about complicated stuff either. My companion wanted a REGULAR ice tea (and she was explicit about it) but we got Thai ice tea. She asked for a sweetener but that wasn't understood either. It was funny at the beginning but got annoying quickly.

All in all, the food was good and the prices were very reasonable but the service left something to be desired.

I have been to Metro twice, but never for dinner so my review is based on the physical location and the service level at the bar.

The place is nicely laid out with modern clean lines.  I attended a business networking event there and enjoyed it.  The service at the bar was very slow both times I was there.  The first time, I figured it was a slow night so they had the newbies working ... but then the service was slow again the second time.  Also, the appetizers were a bit weak.

I plan to have dinner at this place in the future and will update my review then.  For now, I give it 3 stars which means "A-OK" in Yelp world.

Mindful Living Arts

I just had the most therapeutic massage of my life. It was much better than a typical relaxation-type massage.  It felt more like a realignment of my spine!  Chris Arcucci from Mindful Living Arts is more of a healer than a massage therapist.

About three hours ago, I would've said that a massage is a massage is a massage. Not so. Some things were the same: nice music, warm ambiance and a comfortable massage table.  But that's where the similarities ended.

I'm no expert on massage but this one just felt different.  It left me with a true feeling of relief and calmness.  If you're feeling overwhelmed and stressed out (the way I was) or even have some physical pain, I bet a massage from Chris Arcucci would improve the situation.

I have to say as well that the building had plenty of parking, a nice change from the studios on busy Walnut Creek and Lafayette shopping streets.

All in all, I couldn't ask for anything more.  It was great and definitely deserves 5 stars.  Thank you, Chris.

I visited this facility for the 2010 Denim to Diamonds fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House in Palo Alto. The place is beautiful and made the event spectacular and memorable. The clean lines and modern design are a perfect backdrop for the computer history theme.

It's important to note that I was not there for the computer history items on display.  In that sense, I am really not familiar with the museum.  But the facility itself is beautiful and makes a visit well worth scheduling.

Oishi Sushi & Grill

Three of us went to this place last Friday night.  The food was good but the rolls were a bit small and bottled sake was only available in these tiny little bottles.  As far as I know, they each cost over $10.

It's a nice place and the food is good.  I just felt like we came up a bit short, that's all.  We showed up with money to spend and couldn't get the things we were looking for (like a nice big bottle of cold sake).

It's in a central and convenient location with lots of parking.
