Paulus Farm Market

Category: Farmers Market

4 star rating

Paulus Farm Market was a fun trip, its a small farmers market / deli with a nice selection of fresh fruit, baked goods, candy, meats, apple cider and a nice play area for kids called the Fun Fort. Its a fall-time childs play area, for 2 dollars each, children can play in any or all of the following: hay maze, corn & soybean sandboxes, two slides, wooden tractor, etc. They have a day old baked goods section where everything is 50% off.

There's a petting zoo of sorts out back, with chicken, roosters, pigs, horses, sheep, goats, guinea pigs, etc. For only a quarter you can buy feed and give it to the animals, they are happy and your kids are happy. Its a great time all around. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

Calla Bash

Calla bash is alright. They have some good wings, I like the hot and tasty style. They serve american and jamaican food. We tried the curry goat w/ rice & beans and a side of Collard Greens and french fries. The food was cooked in an adequate amount of time. They also serve Ox Tail, Curry Chicken and Jerk Chicken as well as steaks, subs, burgers, jamaican patties and some seafood. Much of the food can be ordered individually or as a meal. The cool thing is that they're open late night on the weekends its until 3am. They have local delivery in the area. Prices range from 4.00 - 9.00 for lunch items, while dinners are 7.00-14.00. On street parking, take out only, cash only.

Cafe Bruges

We stopped at Cafe Bruges for lunch this afternoon. I had heard about the Belgian food & the selection of beer that they have available. The restaurant itself was pretty elegant and the walls were adorned with pictures of homes, markets, streets and boats in Bruges, Belgium. They had banners & posters hanging displaying the names of some of their beers. It was pretty loud as noted by other reviewers, but not crazy.

We ordered the following food as our entree we had the waterzooi of fish, which was basically a stew of shrimp, scallop & snapper, potatoes, carrot, leak & celery for 18.00. As an appetizer we had the Liege salad, which didnt have any lettuce at all, but consisted of green beans, potatoes & bacon bits in a sauce (8.00) and lastly we shared an order of frites with curry ketchup (5.00).

I enjoyed my visit because of the atmosphere and the fact that it unique. Service was fine, but I wasnt so thrilled with the cost of the items or the portions, they were OK, but not large (minus 1 star), and the entrees didnt come with any sides. (minus 1 star) I didnt have the chance to have a drink, but the beer selection was nice: Bavik, Winterkerke, Stella Artois, etc.

I'll be back Im sure, I'd like to try the Belgian Waffle, Crepes and/or some of the desserts! It seemed pretty kid friendly, there were other families there also. About half the tables were full, families, bikers, locals. It has on street parking, and accepts cash VISA and MC available.

Cruisers was alright, lots of food, and cheap too! We stopped for ice cream after a day in the mountains. The vanilla ice cream was great, but the butterscotch sundae was even better. It scores a lot of points for being so charming in my opinion. It is an old gas station, converted into a restaurant. It has all sorts of old antique signs and decorations. Most of the people seemed to be locals and all knew each other. Worth a stop if your ever in the area. Fair amount of parking, we paid cash.

While visiting the gratz fair we stopped by Jack's spot in Pitman, Pa, which looked like a house converted into a bar & restaurant. The food was alright, we ordered a salad, burger & fries and something else. We visited for lunch on a monday afternoon, and it was deserted except for us. Service didnt take long at all, and they were fairly friendly. We eneded up taking a to-go box and paid our bill and left. There was a fair amount of parking, both for cars & trucks, we paid cash.

Jim Mack's is more than just an Ice cream shop. It's a special little attraction, They've got mini-golf, rides for the kids, bounce houses, and even a (caged) bear! The afternoon we visited it was packed, we placed our order and then were called over an intercom when it was finally ready. The food was alright, not too expensive prices, they have a dollar menu available too. We had two pulled pork sandwiches, a hamburger and some ice cream, they also have fries, burgers, subs, fish sandwiches, hotdogs, etc. It's a great family destination, our daughter had so much fun. I was very delighted to find such a wonderful, kid-friendly spot.

Alvaro's Bread and Pastry Shoppe

Alvaro's was a great spot to get lunch. It's a small cafe that specializes in homemade italian food at the intersection of Green & Peffer Streets in midtown. We stopped there after visiting the Olewine Memorial Library on Nearby 3rd Street. Our lunch consisted of: a salad with artichoke, slices of capicolla ham, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese, sliced tomatoes, covered in oregano, it came with two slices of bread (which was excellent.) We also had fresh penne with a sausage on the side, along with a roll of bread. It was really nice.

Im really glad I took dana's advice and went back. I plan on visiting again soon and checking out some of the other things they have to offer: pizza, more desserts, gelato, other pasta and maybe even a soup. I liked it so much I invited some of my friends back for our next outing.

Arepa City

Yelp had some fantastic reviews of Arepa City, which interested me, so this past weekend we ended up visiting during Kipona. I havent really had experience with much South American food, but was very excited. There is indoor & outdoor seating, inside its kind of tight, not much leg room. There are pictures & postcards from Venezuala that decorate the walls. The waiter & waitress were pretty cool, they put up with us (our daughter was really restless)!

For starters we had the Sopa de Caratos Negras (black bean soup 4.50)- which was alright, it had a dark rich broth. We tried the Pabellon arepa (flank steak, black beans, fried plantains & white cheese 7.00) which was really good. We also tried the Carne Mechada (flank steak, onions, peppers, tomato 6.50) and to go we got the 2 more arepas (Pernil and Chorizo con Papas). They came with a small paper wrapper to pick it up, and were loaded with meat and cheese.

Its always exciting to see new styles of food in Harrisburg, that really arent that expensive. Arepa City is on my to-do-again list. Thanks so much to all the other Yelpers (Lisa, Brian, Dana) who really had spot on reviews!

Haines Shoe House

4 star rating

The Shoe House has always been on my list of odd places to visit, and thanks to Gingersnaps review, I finally decided to go one afternoon. There was some parking in the back of the house, which is just off the Hallam exit of Rt 30. The tour itself was 4.50 per person, kids are free, and there is no inside photography (I guess they want some security or privacy.) Its run by a husband and wife who live in York County.

The house was originally built in 1948 by millionaire Mahlon Haines a local shoe salesman, who had nearly 40 stores throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. Word is he'd let newlywed couples stay there for free. (not sure why, because he was insanely rich?) It was owned and run by different people over time and has offered tours & ice cream going back decades.

The tour starts in the sole of the shoe, then goes up and shows you the bedrooms and bathrooms, storage areas. All of the rooms had pretty unique storage, and the 2nd bathroom had a sink in the hallway, it was very cozy. Tons of stuff in the house was shoe related. Some rooms had miniature shoes, shoe bedspreads, pictures of shoes, shoe toothbrush holders, etc. There was even a birdhouse and dog house in the shape of a shoe!

Finally the tour goes down to the heel, where there is a kitchen and a small gift shop. The shop itself had little trinkets, magnets, snacks and ice cream. It was alright, the owners gave us a small picture for our daughter to color. There were lots of stairs to climb and it wasnt wheelchair accessible. Not sure, but might be cash only.

Bridgeside Cafe

We spent the day travelling around Snyder County, looking for things to do, and this was our lunch stop on the way. Bridgeside Cafe was alright, not great, not bad. We ordered a kids meal with grilled cheese & fries & fruit punch for 4.09 and a 3 piece fish platter with bread, macaroni salad, fries & a rootbeer for 7.55. It took about 15 minutes to get our food ready. A few other families were eating as well.

They have both online and instant lottery available. There's a large deck out back that overlooks Middle Creek. Fair amount of parking available. we paid cash, but not sure if they accepted credit cards.
