Great Burrito

$5 for two chicken tacos with lettuce, salsa and cilantro is a good deal. Unfortunately, they only do soft tacos which were mucho greasy and hard to eat. They were tasty and all the customers inside were Mexican which I assume means this place is authentic. Great Burrito also serves pizza which is an odd addition to their extensive Mexican menu.

Ben's Pizzeria

After one too many liters of beers, I happened across Ben's Pizzeria. How I got to this location of the city I do not know. Why they had Subway Restaurant booths inside, I do not know either. And most importantly, why I ordered a slice of chicken and broccoli pizza is the biggest mystery of all. Yet I liked it. Everything. I liked the bathroom with the graffiti that read, "Flush the toilet, f*cker." I liked the the sauce. I liked the tender chicken. I liked the fact the slice wasn't greasy. I even liked the broccoli which didn't overpower any other ingredients on the slice. I liked the employees who only spoke two words, "Who's next?" And last but not least, I liked the size of the slice, even though it was $4.

Thunder Jackson's

I don't know what to think of Thunder Jackson's. In my second visit I saw older couples in their 60's, young infants, drunks on cocaine or speed (I swear), half-naked bartenders and no less than eight dudes wearing jorts.

But then TJ's give you a bunch of great deals and interesting experiences to keep you around all afternoon/night. Happy hour is celebrated everyday with $3 domestic bottles and sangria. They half Das Boot. Half-naked waitresses and bartenders will perform tricks with fire, throw out free jello shots or get all up in your personal space.

They also have HD televisions on every wall which means there's not a bad spot in the house. During games and late evenings, this place can get rowdy. Too rowdy for my taste, but that's just me. Some people thrive in whirlwinds of spilled beer, funky colored shots and burgers without cheese, AKA the dirty burger.

Interesting experiences are sure to follow if you try Thunder Jackson's, not sure about the satisfaction part though.

Red Mango

I don't like the taste of plain frozen yogurt, especially the tart flavor. Therefore, I don't like Red Mango. See, I dig frozen yogurt, but it's got to be flavored. Vanilla, strawberry, pomegranate, blueberry, peanut-butter...I don't care, as long as it doesn't taste like plain yogurt. Every flavor at Red Mango does. I sampled each variety and opted for the blueberry, maybe vanilla. I don't remember because it all tasted the same. I tried to nullify the flavor with their wide array of toppings. No dice. I don't care that each serving has less calories than a spinach salad, I just want frozen yogurt to taste delicious. I'll stick to Tasti D Lite until I try Pinkberry.

If these shots aren't watered down, my alcohol tolerance is reaching Joe Namath levels or my taste buds no longer work.

*A tequila shot, though refreshing, should make me cringe. Theirs didn't.
*A vodka shot should make me want to puke or at least run to the bar for a chaser. No need here.
*A kamikaze shot should taste good after four shots, but it should not taste like limeade.

$10 for 5 shots is still a good deal though. They also played some good music, but this place doesn't deserve anything more than 2 stars because it's very, very dirty. I've been to some dirty bars, but this place is by far the dirtiest. A cockroach the size of my index finger was walking up a wall behind our booth. Luckily, a fast acting drunk ripped off his shoe and got that sucker lickety-split. I recommend standing at the bar, ripping five shots and then getting out as fast as possible.

Benvenuto Café

Benvenuto has a great location right near Madison Square Park. Outdoor seating is ample and there are plenty of tables inside. The employees were extremely patient while I pondered the menu for five minutes. It is an extensive breakfast and lunch menu with plenty of options including sandwiches and salads. They also have a fridge full of grab and go items like yogurt with granola. The coffee is good, but this place does run on the pricier side- $5 for an egg and swiss sandwich on wheat. Comes with territory of the Flat Iron District. The sandwich was whipped up lighting fast and it did taste good.

I've been on a breakfast sandwich binge lately- two scrambled eggs with Swiss on wheat. Usually I throw a little ketchup on that bad boy and I'm chowing down. Blue is super cheap, the service is quick and the waitstaff is friendly. Even though the coffee isn't great and my bread wasn't toasted, the two slices of gooey Swiss cheese made the sandwich gratifying.

Cafe Via Espresso is a great local coffee shop. It's uncrowded and perfectly clean. The employees are very friendly and all of their baked goods look delicious. I've only had their blueberry and mango smoothie for $4.25 which was great. They also have free wi-fi which is certainly a plus when I want to get out of the apartment with my laptop.

A great neighborhood bar that's almost as good as the Irish Rover. Every third drink is free. That includes Jameson which only costs $4.75. You're probably thinking I'm pulling a fast one on you. I'm not. I don't do that kind of thing. They are lacking on the televisions though and some spots in the bar are simply not conducive to watching the game. Otherwise, the laid back atmosphere inside and small stage surrounded by shelves of books is five star worthy.

Irish Rover

How can I say a bad thing about quite possibly the coolest neighborhood bar I've ever been to in my short 21 year old life? This is the kind of place I want to stick in my pocket and take with me everywhere I go for the rest of my life. There might not be that many attractive women who frequent the Rover, but whatever. Televisions are everywhere so it's pretty easy to catch a score. You can bring in outside food and domestic pitchers are $10 while imports are $13. I come here when my priority is drinking beer, watching sports or talking about Irish related things with the bartenders who are actually Irish, accent included.
