Interstate Draft House

I stopped by Interstate Draft House on their grand opening night for a drink after work and ended up nearly closing the place.  The interior is cozy with a nice bar space and dining room in the back.  And there's an adorable patio out back complete with a cute cat (which I think after about 8 vodkas we named Teabag???)  We ordered the guacamole, calamari and seitan tips.  Also had a bite of someone else's spinach pizza.  GET THE SEITAN TIPS.  Amazing.  The place, food and staff are all awesome and I'm looking forward to going back soon!

fyi: cash only for now while they get their credit card machines sorted out.

absolutely gorgeous and comfortable space... i stopped by for a drink after work yesterday, then went home to change into play clothes......... and then went back to frankford hall.  i hardly even cared that it was raining.  that may be the fault of the dogfish head they have on tap.  (myantonia, i think?  something i have never had before.  strong, hoppy, perfect)  did not try the food, but will next time - perhaps that'll earn it its fifth star.  the staff was awesome, the managers seemed attentive but not ridiculous, even the valet guys were extra-friendly.  i'll be back soon and often!!

i've been growing my hair out for over a year and finally woke up one day deciding it was officially untamable and unacceptable.  luckily i called DnA early in the morning before i had a chance to talk myself out of it, and was sitting in kristal's chair an hour and a glass of complimentary wine later.  i'd spent a few minutes in the waiting room watching her finish the previous customer's haircut (awesome) and decided i'd let her have her way with me.  her immediate reaction was asymmetrical bob, and i'm glad we went with it.  i love my new cut.  it's totally zero maintenance - like shake your head out of the shower and it's styled.  she took the back up really short which i find many stylists are hesitant to do, but i love having no hair on my neck for the summer - coupled with long locks in the front which are my security blanket, it's the perfect cut.  received so many compliments on it already.  she's a really friendly stylist, easy to carry on a fun conversation with.  perfect start to a perfect lazy sunday.  thank you DnA!  :)

The Farmers' Cabinet

I adored this place based on one visit alone.  We were strolling the city late on a weeknight, trying to find drinks, grub and an outdoor table.  Talula's Garden was closed and we were walking in the general direction of El Vez when we stumbled upon Farmer's Cabinet.  There was a lone wine barrel table nestled just outside the window, it became ours.  OK, so a barrel with backless barstools is not conducive to ladies in skirts and heels lounging and drinking.  :)  The seats were highly uncomfortable but an otherwise wonderful experience made up for it.  Our server was perfect, she anticipated absolutely everything we could have needed and paid plenty of attention to our table even though we were kinda out of the way of her other tables.  She was friendly and quick, a total delight.  We then proceeded to order entirely too many dishes to fit on the barrel: a punchbowl with two glasses, supplementary cocktails, desserts, pretzels (though they were out), a caesar salad and I believe an artichoke dip with root vegetable chips, though my memory starts failing me there so that last dish may or may not be totally inaccurate.  Everything was awesome.  We didn't spend much time inside, but the interior looked absolutely gorgeous.  I can't wait to go back for a full dinner!

my coworkers and i order a lunch feast from this place at least once a week.  it's always fantastic though the amount of onion used in the guacamole is not at all conducive to carrying on in a customer service-based job after our lunch break.  the chile rellenos are fantastic.  i'm docking one star for cheese whiz on the nachos, but everything else we've had is amazing.  get extra green salsa :)

i've never eaten a full meal here, but based on my experience of grazing over snacks and drinks, i am a fan.  calamari is great.  plus i always seem to run into a long-lost neighbor here, or spend way too much time chatting with the bartenders or the owner.  it's a place you can go solo for a drink and leave with a few new (or rekindled old) friends under your belt.  comfy, inexpensive, awesome.

Update - 4/27/2011
i still absolutely adore this bar.  living around the corner for the past 5 years i've gotten to know the owner and several of the employees well and it's become the spot to go after a long day at work when i've already changed into my lounging clothes and swore i wasn't going out again for the night.  i am craving a hoppy beer right now and i'm in cutoff shorts so i know exactly where i am heading when i finish this beer.

after seeing a bunch of really good acts here and discovering new ones, i'm upping the fire one star.  the music often goes til the bar has to close, so if the band you want to see is headlining, be prepared for that.  get there early and see if any of the openers surprise you.

i have had some really, really good experiences at the fire.  i've also blacked out beyond recognition which can only lead me to believe (or hope) it was a good experience.  i live right around the corner, so it's really easy to stumble out when i've been drinking at home, alone, on a weekend night and check out what may or may not be good at the fire.  surgeon, sort-of the house band, is really good.  others, eh not so much.  but i am a big believer in turning any experience into a good experience, so i still manage to have fun.  staff's cool and drinks are cheap and i love not having to venture far to see live music.

really enjoy board game nights and west philadelphia orchestra here, both sadly only once a month.  or maybe that is a good thing.

WPO warnings:
it is safe to set your purse on the floor here; no one is going to steal it - but it is NOT safe to set it on the table because during the floor-stomping hoedown earthquake it will jitterbug its way off the table and land facedown with contents scattered on the floor.  all the empty pint glasses on the table will share the same fate, so i advise against flip flops, sandals or bare feet as well.

the intense crowding at WPO has a way of keeping you vertical and overestimating your sobriety.  set your citywide special limit before walking in the door, and stick to it.  test your abilities at unsupported standing and cab hailing every hour.

do not let yourself think for one minute it is okay to go home with the skinny nerdy overly drunk boy, nor is it okay to crawl home via the broad street median.  unfortunately other options can be tough to spot in the heat of the moment, so go into it knowing bad decisions will likely be made that night.

I didn't become a regular here until recently, but I've definitely paid attention to the gripes of Yelp and the neighborhood message board.  I can't say what they were like when they first opened, but they have a fantastic selection of stuff for what I'm looking for right now.  I work at a bank up the street, and the entire branch has gone on a lunch diet.  Every day they give me money, I walk down, browse, and return with armfuls of semi-healthy and totally satisfying goodies.  Moz-avocado sandwich... hummus and pita chips... Greek yogurt... trail mixes... random pretzel selection... stuff that is delicious enough to keep us from caving in and ordering pizza or Chinese.  Oh, and chapstick and cigarettes.  The employees are all so friendly too.  I adore this place.
