Update - 8/9/2010
I've debated on giving my second review three or four stars but decided on three because even though this experience was far superior to my last visits to Aspire, there were still some big glaring issues they need to address.

First with the good. The food was excellent. There were four people at our table and we were all happy with our food. Our server was very nice.

Now the bad. Do not come to restaurant if you have any time restraints. It took us so long to get out food. The place was probably a quarter full yet it took us practically an hour to get out food. We didn't have an appetizers so we just sat there eating bread the whole time. If you want to go out for a leisurely dinner with friends and not worry about time, then Aspire will be good for you.

The second issue was the gnats. There were gnats flying everywhere and it was very annoying. We spent half the time making sure they didn't dive into our drinks. Yes, they have doors that open up to the patio but I've been in plenty of restaurants with doors open to the outside and I've never seen a problem like that before unless the restaurant was originally dirty. It's not a great look for your restaurant when everyone at the table is swatting bugs out of their faces.

I appreciate the restaurant to reaching out to me after seeing my last review and them wanting to make it better. This experience was definitely better but there are issues they still need to work on. The only way I could see myself going back to Aspire was if someone else was paying, and only after I tell them about my past experiences there.

I've had not one but two horrible experiences at Aspire. The first horrible experience was when I went one afternoon with my fiance for some lunch. We were the only people in the restaurant. There were three people outside drinking. My fiance ordered the Margarita pizza and I ordered the portobello mushroom pizza. We also ordered a couple of beers. First off i noticed that my beer glass was filthy. I tried to get our server's attention but she was too busy talking to the bartender. Finally when she came over I asked and got a new beer glass. When our food came out I noticed the mushrooms looked a little weird. The server was lingering around the table as I went to take my first bite. Once I bit the slice, I immediately spit it out. She asked me what was wrong. I told her that sausage was all over my pizza. She was like "Yeah, that's what you wanted". I said that's definitely not what I wanted since I am a vegetarian. She said "Oops" and took the pizza away. I couldn't believe that.

Even though that experience was bad, we decided to go back for my friend's birthday dinner. The place was fairly busy. The server was extremely nice but apparently he was the only server on duty and had to deal with the entire restaurant. Once the food arrived, we noticed that three out of the four dinners were wrong and inedible. I asked for no onions and onions were all over my pizza. Another dinner was served burnt. And the birthday girl's pasta looked and tasted like it was dressed with gel. The server apologized and asked if we wanted anything else but we said no and left.

I don't understand how a restaurant that is supposed to be high end could give its patrons such poor experiences every time they go there. Needless to say, I am never going back.    Show owner comment »

The draw are the cupcakes and the liquor. They do have a full menu but what you'll want are the cupcakes. Every single cupcake I've had except the Portuguese sweet bread cupcake has been amazing.

The problem is the lack of staff. The first time I went there was one waitress and I believe the owner serving. We had to wait a pretty long time for service. We then went back the Sunday night afterward and the place was halfway packed and only the owner was on duty. We didn't even get a chance to get anything to drink with our cupcakes because he never came around. I completely understood that he was busy but if the place is busy, hire more staff.

The place is awesome and I will definitely go back but they really need more people working the place.

I love The Wild Colonial. There is a great selection of beer and alcohol. I wouldn't ask for anything too fancy or frozen though. It's a tavern, not a upscale bar. It's big with lots of tables and chairs. It's great for hanging out with big groups of friends. The atmosphere is chill. The people are laid back and I've never seen any douchebaggery happening in there. There are some tables outside for the smokers. I've only eaten there once (ordered the nachos) so I can't say much on the food. All in all, it's a good place to get a drink and hang out with friends.

The Red Fez is a favorite of mine. Everything my fiance and I have eaten there has been fantastic. The macaroni and cheese, the grilled cheese, the black bean and goat cheese quesadilla, and the "eleventeen" chicken wings are amazing.

Two reason this place is getting four stars instead of five. First is because the eleventeen chicken wings have been taken off the menu. Even though my fiance and I have since stopped eating meat, we always recommended the wings to our meat eating friends. Also the bar upstairs is way too dark. I can understand setting the mood, but when I can't even see the food in front of me, that's where it becomes a problem.

I prefer going there during the week instead of the weekend because i gets packed pretty fast and I just want to sit and enjoy my food in peace.

The Melting Pot

My boyfriend and I went to The Melting Pot last Friday for the first time. First off we liked the layout of the restaurant. As another reviewer pointed out it does look like a labyrinth. It was dark and right away we knew it was a great place to bring a date.

We've never had fondue before so our waitress was very attentive and explained how everything worked. As we looked through our menu we saw it was going to be an expensive date but we let it go because we just wanted to enjoy trying fondue for the first time.

The part that was a little confusing was if we had to order things like we did. It was made to seem like we had to order the cheese fondue and then we had to order the entrees. The cheese fondue (we had the Sam Adams beer cheese fondue) was great but we would have been find just going straight to our entrees. It seems like you have to order an appetizer. It was strange.

The food was great. Sometimes it was hard to tell if the food was cooked well enough even if we left it longer than necessary. The drinks were fantastic. I had the love martini which tasted like there was no alcohol in it and sweet but was not overbearing by being too sweet. My boyfriend had the yin and yang which was delicious as well and a beautifully made drink.

We didn't have desert because we already were pushing $100. It would be great to go back to just have the chocolate fondue and drinks. That I would definitely do.

The Melting Pot was pretty cool but since it's so pricey it'll just be a special occasion restaurant for me.

Union Station Brewery Providence

I've been going to Union Station Brewery for a couple of years now every few months or so and every time we go it's always been great. We've been getting the same waitress the past three or four times we've gone (I believe her name is Erin) and she is always very nice and attentive without being annoying.

The food can be a bit pricey but I don't mind because the portions are big and I always leave with leftovers. The beer selection is always good and I like how they recommend what beer goes best with their specials.

It's a great place to bring a date or just to hang out with your friends. And try the smothered fried chicken. It's amazing!

H&M

First off I do love H&M. It's a fantastic place to get stylish clothing for cheap. I do have problem with the Providence location. It's in the mall so it's much smaller than its sister stores in Boston or New York. Boston has all women's collections plus the men's line, children's line, and intimates. The New York store is I believe four levels stories. Even the new location in Emerald Square has a larger selection that the Providence location.

The store is usually neat but there are times it looks like a hurricane came through. There usually is a wait to get rung out because there is no one at the register. Some of the associates are standoffish and look like they couldn't be bothered to assist you. Luckily for the customer there really isn't a need to deal with the associates beside ringing out and the dressing room.

I keep going back because the clothing is cheap but I believe still well made. It is worth it making the pilgrimage to the Downtown Crossing H&M in Boston if possible.

It's really hard not to give Prospect Park five stars. Even though the great view is being marred by the condo buildings popping up every other week, it's still a great place to bring an out-of-towner for a view of Providence. The somewhat constant patrolling of cops is a downer but the park does have a curfew so technically, we're not even supposed to be there late at night. But we keep going back even when the cops kick us out because it's a great place to chill. I've met some cool people up there that I'll probably never see again but will always remember all the good times I've had at the park. Also, a good place to watch the fireworks (if Providence ever haves them again).

Days Inn

1.0 star rating

If I could give less than one star I would for this place. I had the worst experience in a hotel/ motel here. We got in around one in the morning so we went straight to bed. My boyfriend went to use the bathroom and the toilet started to run. He's the type to try to fix it so he lifted up the lid on the back of the toilet and a hose came up and sprayed everywhere, soaking him. I told him we couldn't stay in that room and as we got our stuff together I noticed how dirty the room was. We were just spending the night and leaving early in the morning so I didn't think to inspect the room. We hoped that room was going to be clean, which was too much to ask for.

We went to the Front Desk guy who gave us attitude because we wanted another room. I told him then we would go to another place but I wanted a refund. He said he couldn't give me one and we would have to wait until the morning to get one from his manager. I told him that sounds like he was going to screw us over. If we stay then we would have to reason to get a refund and if we go and spend money on another place and what if the manager did not give us a refund. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

We had the guy put us in another room and the door handle to that room broke. It wouldn't lock. They front desk guy then put us in the room next to it. My boyfriend immediately checked the toilet. I was telling him the room was fine but as I was doing that, the front desk guy told us to leave. I couldn't believe my ears. He said "since I was complaining about everything", I should just go. I told him that this place was dirty and disgusting and that if he wanted us to leave he would have to give us a refund. He said he couldn't because I wouldn't get the money. I told him I know how credit card refunds work. I might not get it back that second but he could process it. He said that he couldn't and his manager had to in the morning. I could see that I was getting nowhere so I asked him to leave the room and I would talk to the manager in the morning.

The manager, later found out the owner, was no better. He gave me an attitude and told me I was causing problems. I couldn't believe he would talk to a customer that way. I got my receipt and called Days Inn corporate customer service. About 15 minutes later I got a phone call from the Days Inn. The owner thought it was a good idea to call me and yell at me for making a complaint. I told him it was a bad idea for him to call me and hung up on him. I called customer service back and told them if he called me again it was harassment and I would follow through with it.

I ended up getting a refund about three weeks later. Good on Days Inn's part but I will tell everyone I know to never stay at a Days Inn.

The best cupcakes I've ever had. Sadly I live in Rhode Island and won't be having them any time soon but they were something to remember from my time in LA. The wait is wicked long but that happens when the cupcakes are so good!
