Black Hearts Hair House

I was all ready to make an appointment at a different salon, but made another quick look through yelp. Black Hearts had much more consistant reviews, not to mention a raving one from a friend of mine (Stacey A)... SO GLAD I decided to go with BHHH.

I've got really short hair, and normally I just go to a student salon and pay $5. Why shell out a ton for a few inches of hair? After some ok cuts, and one with a bit of an awkward patch, I decided I just wanted to find a salon and a stylist I could just keep seeing and not have to worry. Short hair isn't harder, but it's super easy to tell when it's botched and there's no way of hiding it.

Enter BHHH and Brenna. They were super busy, but I called earlier in the morning and was able to get an appointment. I didn't specifically ask for Brenna, but who ever did the scheduling paired me up well! She listened to what I wanted and asked about how I take care of my hair now... She was able to make suggestions that fit into my styling lifestyle (that is, I can just wash it, tousle it, and go!)..

$50 is still more than I'd like to spend on a haircut... but to get the peace of mine that I can just sit down and say "I just want it to look good" and get what I asked for... worth it. (Also well worth the trip down all the way from Rogers Park.)

Brenna and BHHH, you've got yourself a new regular client.

(My only suggestion is to bring your own reading material just in case it does it busy.)

Only go here if you're in a hurry... well, and there isn't a line.

I can't have caffeine, but still want a nice hot beverage in the morning... so I order off menu. A vanilla rooibus tea, steeped only in milk. They're completely in consistent with charging me. I realize, there's no standard button for what I'm asking for. But it's just steamed milk and a tea bag.

Lastly, I paid for a grande, and the cup is barely half full. The top is all foam. If I'm going to be charged nearly $5 for a tea, I want a full cup.

I think from now on I'm just going to go out of my way, and leave for work early so I can find an Argo tea.

If you're getting something basic, sure, this place is fine. But there's a full starbucks a few blocks away.

Stopped by here on our way home from California to Chicago...

So many options... I went with the pulled pork, and loaded up on pickles.

There was just TOO MUCH FOOD for me. I gave up on the fries, and even the bread for the sandwich. I just went for the meat.

The sauces were good, but none of them really blew me away... which bummed me out because I kind of built this place up. (Okay so one of the guys built it up because he talked about it before we even left Chicago on the way out west.) It was definitely good. And I love the feel of the place. That's exactly what I imaged true barbeque places looking and feeling like. I guess I'm just a fan of the carolinas' bbq. (South Carolina has a mustard bbq that's freaking amazing, even if it is from a uber crazy right wing christian owner...)

Stopped by here on our way home from a tour in California... Cute place, love the red couch and the photography there.

Everyone seemed to love their coffees... I can't have (much) caffeine, so I went with a chai. Definitely hit the spot after hours in the bus! I'd definitely be okay stopping there again. Next time I'm getting ice cream.

I was out on the west coast with the band, and on our way out of San Diego (and California to head back to Chicago), we were on the hunt for fish tacos. After a lot of walking... part of our group (myself included, obviously) stopped here.

Nice outdoor seating where we could watch a car show, and thus people watch. Most of the group had the fish taco special, and from what I heard... it was awesome. I had a fish & chips special. The chips (fries) were cooked perfectly... Same with the fish, it was perfectly flakey and moist.

Best part of the meal, which was a shock for me... the slaw. I'm not a slaw person at all. Generally hate the stuff. I could eat gallons of their pink slaw. Perfect touch of sweetness.. The chipotle mustard? Also amazing. And the manager actually explained to me how they make it! All from scratch on site.

If we could get them to move to Chicago, I'd be happy... of course it'd cost twice as much... so I guess I'll have to wait until next year's tour and hope we can go back!

It's a nice, LITTLE, place. I do like it. The place that is.

But the pizza? Meh. Just something about the taste. It's just a fraction off for me. Definitely do not like it as leftovers.

For a $5 slice, I've definitely had better (aka $3.25 for deep dish at Art of Pizza. now THAT is a good slice). If it was $2, I wouldn't complain at all... but I guess I expect just a little bit more in taste for $5.

Some people like it--hell, two of my classmates would go here every day. It's just not for me.

It seems I always end up here when I'm famished. And they never disappoint. In fact, one gyro is generally too much for me. (Which I'm okay with, on the occasion I have eggs at home, the gyro meat makes a great omelet.)

I get the same thing every time. Gyro and cheese fries. I've learned to order just a side of cheese for my fries rather than asking for "cheese fries" specifically... because when you order a gyro, it comes with fries... So ordering a "gyro and cheese fries" means a gyro, small fries, and another larger order of fries with cheese sauce on the side. (Although, sometimes, that's not a bad thing.)

One of these days I want to try their wings or a Greek salad... but that gyro gets me every time. Love it.

Oh, and they do indeed take credit cards--as far as I know, there's no minimum, but I've never ordered anything less than $5.

Love this store. Seems small on the outside--might be due to the crazy parking lot others have mentioned--but they've got a great selection.

First, I don't recommend driving there. With the Broadway bus and Red Line right there--and you're not far from the 151 or even the 146 and 147--it's pretty easy to get to for the most part.

Mainly, I go for their selection of ramen/instant noodles. (My favorite are the instant udon for $0.75.) Lately I've been getting a bag of plain buns for $1.85, those plus the chocolate "CeReal" make a great breakfast.

Haven't gotten the fresh produce here, but as far as packaged & frozen foods? It's awesome. It's my main store for groceries.

I tried going into Chui Quon... and then to the Hong Kong Bakery. It was 5 in the afternoon, and not really much left of any interest to me. (Not to mention, I was the only one in Chui Quon and they ladies didn't even look up from their conversation to acknowledge that I'd come in. The HK place mainly had western style cookies, and I wasn't interested in that.)

So I decided to walk east and pop in one last place before heading home...

Lucks was empty, but the lady behind the counter was super friendly. Then I saw what I'd been interested in: sponge cakes! I know it's simple, but I'd just eaten a feast down in Chinatown and was stopping by Tai Nam for groceries... decided I wanted some dessert. (Plus I promised my friend some cake, and we didn't have time down in Chinatown.)

I got "cupcakes", a large spongecake, sesame seed balls, some sort of lemon strip cakes, and some sweet buns... oh and some sort of pork ball that she recommended which was super amazing. One of those with a bao or noodle bowl would make a great lunch.

I'll definitely be back. If I lived closer I'd probably spend all day there doing homework and eating amazing treats.

Oh, FYI: Cash only.

Just had this and WOW.  Amazing.  So much food my stomach feels like it's going to explode.

I got the #11 -- the plate with fries (cajun style of course -- which just means they dump a lot of delicious spices on top of your fries).

At first it just looked like a plate with tons a fries and some meat.  Maybe 2/3 fries, 1/3 meat.  No, not at all.  Very deceiving.  There was SO. MUCH. FOOD.  I ate a good serving size and it still looked like I hadn't touched my plate.  And only $7!  I got a to-go box -- a normal, medium sized to-go box, and the food barely fit.

The pork was juicy and had a great spice to it.  And the fries, not uber awesome, but still very good.  My friend had one of the kebab in bread -- which is a really good sesame seed bread.

The owner is really nice and VERY passionate about his food.  He went through and told us all how his wrap is more that *just* a wrap.  They use a different wheat, and some spices and tomatoes and make the torrilla wrap in house.  Absolute dedication.  Since we kind of confused him about what we wanted -- he ended up giving my friend with bread with fries instead of salad... and so he ended up giving us some free falafels too!

The inside is bright -- orange.  Which I love.  We've be talking about color theory in class recently and I believe orange is a really good color for this place.  And well, not sure if it was just that night or what, but the euro-rave music was sort of awesome.  It's not overwhelming, but fits.

Last time I was in this area, a couple years ago, this area was crap.  Complete crap -- newspaper up on all the windows and no one was in this area.  SO VERY GLAD this restaurant is here.  Generous servings for a good price!

Go here!  Have a delicious kebab food baby.  You won't be disappointed!
