Who knew failing repeatedly could be such a pleasant experience.

Wanting to make better use of my Saturday, I called ahead of time and made an appointment. I could tell by the proprietor's phone manner alone that my car and I would be in good hands. He (Brian) let me choose the time, showing an early willingness to accommodate the customer's schedule, and keeping our dialogue on the phone free of unnecessary jargon and drama, asking only the make and year of my car.

When I arrived, 15 minutes early, he offered to make coffee or tea, clicked on the space heater for warmth in the makeshift lounge area in one corner of the large, high ceilinged garage, rapid fired some paperwork, zipped my car into the shop and went to work for all of...seven minutes, allowing me just enough time to admire the resident, dilapidated upright piano and talk to the attendant artist whose 3 large canvas paintings hung on the north and south walls. This is not your ordinary smog test station.

On completion of the test, he pulled my car back out of the garage and parked it just outside the shop. Returning to the test machine computer he seemed a little bit surprised (way more so than I) to find that my 1999 Subaru Outback Sport had failed. He sat down with me and the print-out. I explained. He made a suggestion. I followed it. I returned. I failed. But I can -- and will -- try again, and again, and again, and again (until I bite the bullet and replace the catalytic converter) because Auto Row Smog offers unlimited FREE retests.

Fast, informative, cost-competitive, and ultra pleasant family business. Go WAY out of your way to come here, unless, of course, you're killing all of us with your smog test-failing, polluting vehicle.

The Trappist

In keeping with my constant striving for inconvenience in absolutely everything I do, I chose to indulge in Berkeley's best (Gioia pizza) in one of Oakland's best settings -- The Trappist -- for my birthday celebration last month. I inquired first with the owners as to whether they'd welcome an influx of large pizza boxes and received a sweet, affirmative and quick reply.

The interior is narrow and small, and number of seats few and especially difficult to procure as a group of 12, but I'd forewarned my guests and nobody minded in the end, for many slices of (can't say "hot"; the pizza had to trek many miles to reach us) butternut squash-gorgonzola and Barack O'broccoli were at hand. There is a warmth about the space which is heavily outfitted in brick and wood and lovingly accented, and the bartenders are extraordinarily knowledgeable and adept at guiding patrons through their selection of over 140 specialty bottled, and 15 rotating tap, beers. The serving of the beer is something also to behold, with each beer served in its customized manufacturer's hand-rinsed glass.

I wasn't a beer drinker before I first visited The Trappist five months ago. Now I am, thanks entirely to the bartender who refused to believe I could only, at best, tolerate what was before me. Instead I met Duchesse de Bourgogne. First-rate place, right down to the music that plays.

Man, major bummer that the rosemary panini that helped make the "potato skin" a 5-star sandwich has been traded in for sliced bread, due, apparently, to cost, and yet the cost of the sandwich remains the same.

But I'll balance the gripe with a new compliment: the window treatment -- the sorta pseudo frosted glass material that covers the lower 1/4th of the windows? Nicely conceals butt crack from the sidewalk passers-by. 'cause I don't like to think before I sit.

They aren't pretty, but neither is Lemmy Kilmister. If you're buying chocolate or music for its looks you're just buying it -- and you're a fool.

XOX truffles leave a mess on your fingers. They're irregularly shaped and melt on the tongue for their lack of wax. Skip the hard shell you find in Christopher Elbow and other truffles and live the rustic life for a moment.

You'll find the best Earl Grey truffle in the Bay Area at this shop.

I wrote a lot of checks here in the mid 90s -- to Napolitos and maybe even Nopolitos, despite my Spanish language minor.

Glenview Shoe Renew

After receiving a quote and handing over my teal sandal with the unhinged strap, I asked for a job order ticket (a customary procedure, no?) and the sole proprietor countered with "That's why I took your name and number."

"No, I mean can I get a job ticket? Like half of yours? Probably won't be needed, but for security, insurance, proof that my shoes were here in the event that the thief knows a woman with one leg who wears a size 11 shoe?"

This most basic business principle was lost on him. I should have walked out, especially after noting the layer of dust over the shoes on the front display shelf. Over EVERYTHING at the reception desk. Would love to support the little guy but, c'mon, a little pride, please.

A simple $20. repair job (strap had slipped out from beneath the foot bed) lasted three wears. Tread carefully here.

Jeni's Ice Creams

Finally, after three years of intently studying Jeni's flavor menu -- which changes with the Ohio seasons -- I was able to sample 6 late summer/early fall flavors yesterday, thanks to Dan B. and Tina E. who hosted the first Annual Ice Cream Social (ICS 1), graciously ordering 6 pints via dry-ice shipment ($40. to CA) to support this sweet, messy, backyard  function.

While Jeni's lost first prize to the homemade raspberry, she wowed everybody with her "pistachio and honey", and the majority with her "butterscotch black brownie" and "queen city cayenne". I enjoyed the way the cinnamon and cayenne surprise-kicked me in the mouth -- preventing the condensed milk chocolate from settling down for a quiet nap on my tongue.

Her "lime cardamom yogurt with lingonberries" and "sweet corn and blackberry" were my least favorite -- the former just a total assault on the taste buds (and lime is a favorite flavor;  I gobble up those TJ's lime popsicles) while the blackberry swirl in the latter was too reminiscent of the gummy fruit jam ribbon found in lesser brands. Others, though, did enjoy it and per Jeni's website the flavor makes a welcome comeback every summer season.

The "apple cider 5-spice sorbet" was also nice with the clove and nutmeg notes especially detectable, although by the time I got around to sampling this one (we had a combination of 16 pints or quarts in front of us!) my bowl was tainted by a soupy swirl of chocolate-caramel-coffee-cheesecake-lavender and I was no longer judging a pure unadulterated sample.

I like that Jeni is mindful of the seasons and uses locally (Columbus, OH) sourced ingredients where she can, and other top quality ingredients elsewhere (Italian amarena cherries, neighboring Kentucky's Maker's Mark whiskey in the buttered pecan). It's apparent via her website and kitchen that she loves what her region offers. I look forward to one day visiting  the City of Columbus and one of her now four retail locations.

And I won't wait for the 2nd ice cream social to sample the next batch that just might raise Jeni's its fifth star. In fact, I'm lining up another small crew of willing samplers now in hopes of nabbing that cherry lambic sorbet before it's gone gone gone!

Go on. Treat yourself. Ice cream dreams do live outside the long lines of Ici and Bi-Rite.

I'll give Bittersweet 3 instead of 2 stars only because they make a couple exceptional drinks that I've not found elsewhere: the spicy hot chocolate and the chocolate thai iced tea. The wall of chocolate is also worth checking out if you're looking for a gift or want to try out some different bars.

There may well be some other fine drinks on the menu but with exception of the oatmeal with fixings and that incredible chocolate cherry sticky bun-roll thing (which is now outrageously priced at $4.95), the baked goods are entirely unremarkable and the pricetags laughable. Not even competitive with the best bakeries in the area (Crixa, Sweet Adeline) - what's up?

The prices are prohibitive, the staff friendliness is hit or miss, and install or turn on some lights, for pete's sake, so we can see what's inside the glass counter before we shell out the $10.

I had high hopes for this place back when it opened. If you're going to open a store predicated on chocolate...please know how to do it.

Bittersweet has turned out to be a huge disappointment.

The Counter

4.0 star rating

Wow. Three visits (requiring a trek through The Caldecott to the WC no less) and three customized burgers in one week. Have I been missing something? Something, that is, besides the experience of building the perfect burger from a selection of 26 toppings, 10 cheeses, and 18 sauces? Was it the twice-yearly drive through the In-N-Out Burger of a week ago, contenting myself with fries and a shake while sneaking admiring glances at my passenger's firm grasp on a freshly baked bun?

By The Counter's proclamation there are 312,120 possible burger combinations.  We vegetarians will have to settle for a thousand or so fewer which, this early on, isn't making me sweat.

Outside of the X-Burger menu at Mineral Restaurant in way-out Murphys, California, The Counter is the vegetarian's best bet for a burger. And it's no Barney's or Burgermeister bullshit $8-10. garden burger pulled out of a frozen box; The Counter's vegetarian patties are scratch-made on the premises with a mixture of bean, grain, vegetable and (surprise!) dried cranberries. Our waitress of yesterday, Pam, whipped out a piece of notepaper and verbally checked off the ingredients that form the patties and, without further provocation, gave us the lowdown on the kitchen prep. The corn hits the flame first thing in the morning and the veggie patties follow -- all of this before any meat touches the grill. A real good deal for those with greater sensitivities.

And unlike Barney's slapped together sandwiches, these toppings are layered with care, which results in a five-star assembled product.

After three visits I heartily endorse the following burger:

1/3 lb vegetarian patty with carrot strings, grilled onions, dried cranberries, sprouts (or mixed baby greens) and herbed goat cheese with caramelized onion marmalade on the side (all sauces come on the side) and an added premium topping of a generous half-avocado on a regular bun. See pics for two variations of this sucker! Wanted to snap a photo of my 2nd visit burger but bit into the fried egg I added and got some yolk on my glasses. Mind the first bite!

If you can't decide between the regular or sweet potato fries and the onion strings, you can opt for the fifty-fifty split or 3-way split accompanied by three distinct dipping sauces. The sweet potato fries need crisping up and I found them far too greasy. The single portion feeds 2-3 average size stomachs.

The shakes are made with Blue Bunny brand vanilla ice cream and made me think back to those Bob's Big Boy days. That is, icy, cold, sweet and dangerously filling, pre-burger, but not for discriminating ice cream fans. If you aren't looking for a bit of nostalgia, skip it.

The prices: a tad high
The beef: certified humane raised and handled: http://certifiedhumane.../

Thirty highway minutes pass, as does the urge to drop into the Battered Beaver. We felt under dressed in flip flops, DEET and dirty fingernails, to say nothing of our sore pelts.

In any case, the 7-layer burrito was a faint recollection by the time we hit Manteca.

I don't eat burgers but it doesn't really matter. Are there cleaner restaurant windows out there?
